How to Wait for a Device with Puppeteer DeviceRequestPrompt

Learn the race-free Puppeteer pattern for waiting for a device request, matching a selectable device, and selecting or cancelling the prompt.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Call page.waitForDevicePrompt() before the browser action that triggers a device request. Start the wait and action together with Promise.all(), then use the returned DeviceRequestPrompt to find and select a matching device. Waiting after the click can miss the prompt: Puppeteer says the method does not return a prompt that is already active.

Wait for the prompt before triggering the request

For example, if clicking a button asks the user to choose a Web Bluetooth device, register the prompt wait at the same time as the click:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

const [devicePrompt] = await Promise.all([
  page.waitForDevicePrompt(),
  page.click('#connect-bluetooth'),
]);

const device = await devicePrompt.waitForDevice(
  ({ name }) => name.includes('My Device'),
);

await devicePrompt.select(device);

Promise.all() starts both operations without waiting for the click to finish before beginning to listen. Once the prompt is available, waitForDevice() resolves to the first device that matches its filter, and select() chooses that device from the prompt. The Puppeteer Page API documents the prompt wait; the DeviceRequestPrompt class reference documents selection and cancellation.

Filter using the properties you actually receive

The example matches a device name, but your predicate should reflect the properties available for the devices in your test. The prompt’s devices property describes the current selectable list. Avoid assuming that the desired device is already available when the prompt opens.

Set a bounded device wait when appropriate

waitForDevice() accepts wait options. The shared Puppeteer wait-options documentation describes a default timeout of 30 seconds and permits 0 to disable the timeout. In a test suite, use a bounded timeout appropriate to the test so a missing device cannot leave the run waiting indefinitely. Check the API reference matching your installed Puppeteer version for version-specific details.

Cancel the prompt instead of selecting a device

If the test needs to dismiss the chooser rather than connect to a device, call cancel() on the prompt:

cancel() dismisses the request prompt; use select(device) when the test should proceed with a device returned by that prompt.

Why waitForDevicePrompt() can miss a prompt

The wait started after the click

This is the most common timing error. Puppeteer’s Page API cautions: “This must be called before the device request is made. It will not return a currently active device prompt.” Put the wait in the same Promise.all() as the click or other triggering action, rather than awaiting the action first. See the Page API reference.

The page never made a device request

If the wait times out, verify that the action actually invokes the device request in the page and that the code path ran. A wait cannot produce a prompt for an event that did not occur.

The filter does not match any listed device

Inspect the device properties available through the prompt and adjust the predicate to match them. The API example uses name; do not rely on a name or other value that your test setup does not expose.

The timeout is unsuitable

Review the WaitTimeoutOptions passed to waitForDevice(). A timeout can indicate that no device satisfied the filter before the wait ended, not necessarily that the prompt itself failed to open.

Browser and hardware requirements depend on your test setup

DeviceRequestPrompt is used for page-originated device requests, including APIs such as Web Bluetooth. The API references do not establish universal browser, operating-system, launch-flag, permission, or physical-device requirements. Check the documentation for the Puppeteer and browser versions in your project and validate against your target environment. The references also do not say that every use requires physical hardware; a mocked or emulated setup may be project-specific rather than a behavior guaranteed by this API.

Version notes

The available Puppeteer references do not all show the same version: the main class reference was reported as version 25.12.0, the waitForDevice() method page as 25.2.1, and the waitForDevicePrompt() and select() references came from the Next documentation. For details that may change by release, use the API reference corresponding to the Puppeteer version installed in your project.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to capture a page rather than exercise a device-selection flow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF. Its API does not automate a Web Bluetooth prompt or replace this Puppeteer test; it is an alternative for screenshot capture.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe:

  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
  • An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
