To volunteer for a historic ferry drydocking project, contact the organization that preserves or operates that specific vessel and ask which roles are open during its current project phase. Some groups welcome newcomers for restoration or shipkeeping; lifting, hull repair, coating, and other technical work may be assigned to specialist contractors. Openings and safety rules vary by vessel and site.
Start with the organization responsible for the ferry
Look for the ferry’s official preservation society, owner, or operating group, then contact its volunteer coordinator. Describe the skills or experience you can offer, your availability, and the kind of work you hope to do. Ask whether volunteers are being recruited for the drydocking itself, for preparation or follow-up preservation, or for support such as administration and fundraising.

For the Bemus Point–Stow Ferry, the official page invites prospective volunteers to email [email protected]. The group’s account of a recent hull repair says the work exceeded volunteer capacity and that a contractor coordinated the lift and drydocking. That example is a reason to ask where volunteers fit in a particular project, not to assume that hands-on hull work is available.

Understand what drydocking involves
Drydocking takes a vessel out of the water so its underwater hull can be accessed for inspection and maintenance. The work can include washing and preparing the hull, sealing underwater openings, applying marine coating, and making steel repairs. The Society for the Preservation of the S.S. City of Milwaukee describes these elements in its project scope; SS Explorer’s preservation society says its hull needs inspection, cleaning, and painting.

Those tasks do not automatically become volunteer jobs. A vessel organization may use volunteers for some preservation work while relying on contractors for lifting or specialist repairs. Confirm the project’s division of work and follow the coordinator’s direction; do not undertake technical work without the required qualifications and supervision.
Compare the kinds of volunteer roles available
Historic-vessel organizations use volunteers in different ways. These examples show the range, but do not guarantee openings on a particular ferry or drydock:

The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust says it has over 300 volunteers contributing over 35,000 volunteer hours each year; the current page does not state the year for those figures. They describe that organization’s volunteer program, not a typical staffing level for ferry projects.

- Which tasks are open to volunteers, and are they part of the drydocking phase or another part of preservation?
- What are the work dates, location, expected hours, and minimum age, if any?
- Is an induction required, and who will supervise the work?
- What experience is needed for the role, and what work is reserved for qualified contractors?
- What clothing, footwear, protective equipment, and tools are required, and which are supplied?
One Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild work-day listing asks attendees to wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes, and says sign-up and experience were not needed for that event. Those details apply to the listed work day only; check the requirements for the ferry project you plan to join rather than buying specialist gear based on a generic checklist.

A project may need volunteers before or after the vessel is out of the water, or in roles unrelated to the hull. Ask about shipkeeping, workshop support, administration, fundraising, or visitor engagement. These roles can contribute to preservation even when technical work is contractor-led or no drydocking volunteer slot is open.
