A browser-based frustum visualization can be a 2D Canvas diagram, a 3D scene rendered with WebGL, or a combination of both. Use requestAnimationFrame() to schedule animation, size the canvas for its displayed dimensions and pixel density, and keep the rendered workload within the available frame time. Those choices make 60fps a target to test—not a result the browser can guarantee.
Choose whether you need a diagram or a 3D camera
A 2D Canvas context draws shapes, lines, text, and images. It can depict a camera, its viewing rays, and a frustum as a clear schematic; it does not, by itself, turn a 3D scene into a perspective view. For actual 3D projection and rendering, use a WebGL context.

- Use 2D Canvas when the presentation needs a labeled illustration of a camera and its field of view. You control the drawing geometry directly.
- Use WebGL when viewers need to see objects projected through a perspective camera, or when the camera and scene should move in three dimensions.
- Combine them when the 3D view needs presentation labels or annotations. Treat overlays as part of the content and performance workload.
MDN describes the drawing operations available through the CanvasRenderingContext2D. The canvas element can also provide a WebGL rendering context; these are distinct approaches, not interchangeable camera modes.
How to draw a frustum in 2D Canvas
For a schematic, draw the camera as a point or short line segment, then connect it to the corners of a near rectangle and a farther rectangle. The connecting edges communicate the viewing volume. Add labels for the near and far distances or field of view only when those values are meaningful to the presentation.

- Choose the canvas’s logical coordinate system and map it to the displayed area.
- Place the camera origin and define the near and far rectangle corners in that coordinate system.
- Draw the rectangles and connecting rays with batched paths where practical, then add labels and any necessary architecture objects.
- Recalculate the geometry when the drawable viewport changes so the diagram does not stretch unintentionally.
This drawing is an illustration: it does not clip or project 3D scene geometry. If objects must behave as though viewed through a perspective camera, use a 3D rendering path.
How WebGL perspective projection relates to the frustum
A WebGL camera view commonly combines model, view, and projection transformations. The model transformation places an object, the view transformation expresses the scene from the camera’s perspective, and the projection transformation maps it into clip space. The frustum is the volume bounded by the camera’s near and far clipping planes and its sides; geometry outside that volume is clipped.

Set the projection’s aspect ratio from the drawable viewport’s width divided by its height. If the viewport resizes, update the projection as well as the rendering dimensions. Otherwise, the scene can appear warped or no longer match the presentation frame.

- Choose near and far distances to fit the scene scale. An unnecessarily distant far plane can reduce depth precision.
- Keep labels and connector geometry legible at the actual presentation output size, not just in a small editor preview.

Size the drawing surface for a 4K presentation
The canvas has a CSS display size and a backing-store size, which determines how many pixels it can draw. A canvas displayed at 1920 by 1080 CSS pixels on a display with a device pixel ratio of 2 could use a backing store of 3840 by 2160 pixels. That is one sizing example, not a universal setting: actual display scale, browser zoom, viewport size, and device limits matter.
MDN’s canvas optimization guidance shows deriving the backing dimensions from the displayed dimensions and device pixel ratio, then scaling the drawing context so drawing coordinates remain convenient. For WebGL, a simple device-pixel-ratio multiplication can produce moiré artifacts at fractional scale factors. Check the output at the browser zoom and operating-system display scales you intend to support rather than assuming multiplication always gives the best result.

A 3840-by-2160 backing store contains 8,294,400 pixels. That pixel count is arithmetic, not a benchmark or a measurement of memory consumption; actual memory use depends on pixel format, buffers, and implementation. Canvas maximum dimensions vary by browser and device. MDN notes that many environments support dimensions above 10,000 by 10,000 pixels, while iOS devices have a notable 4096-by-4096 limit. A 3840-by-2160 buffer is below those individual dimensions, but that does not establish that every target device can allocate or render it reliably. requestAnimationFrame() asks the browser to call an animation callback before a repaint. MDN notes that it generally follows the display refresh rate and is one-shot: an ongoing animation must request another frame from its callback. Its documentation says the most common refresh rate is 60 Hz, while 75, 120, and 144 Hz are also widely used. At 60 Hz, the interval between refreshes is about 16.67 milliseconds; that is the scheduling opportunity for the whole page, not a guaranteed budget exclusively for your drawing code.

Use the callback’s timestamp to calculate elapsed time or animation progress. Advancing an object by a fixed distance on every callback makes the animation run faster on a higher-refresh-rate display. A basic loop has this shape:

The loop requests another frame each time it runs; it does not force a particular refresh rate. MDN’s requestAnimationFrame documentation covers the callback timestamp, scheduling, and one-shot behavior.
Reduce work in the actual scene
Optimization should preserve the information viewers need. For an architecture presentation, removing labels may make a diagram faster but less useful; instead, measure with the real labels, connectors, and effects in place.

- Batch operations. Group compatible drawing calls and avoid unnecessary canvas state changes.
- Redraw selectively. If the scene permits, update changed regions rather than repainting everything.
- Measure effects. Expensive effects such as
shadowBlurare candidates for removal if profiling shows they contribute meaningfully to the workload. - Consider OffscreenCanvas. Moving eligible rendering work to a worker can help keep other UI responsive, but it does not guarantee a higher frame rate.
These are techniques to evaluate, not proof of a performance result. MDN’s canvas optimization guide and WebGL best practices describe relevant sizing and rendering considerations.
Validate the 60fps target on intended devices
No measured 4K canvas-camera result establishes that this design, or any particular implementation, reaches 60fps. A defensible claim requires testing the finished presentation workload on defined hardware and browsers. Record the canvas backing dimensions, browser and version, device, display scaling, and measurement method so results can be interpreted rather than generalized.
