How to Visit the Pitcairn Islands: Routes, Costs and Entry Rules

Pitcairn has no airport. Most visitors fly to Mangareva, take the Silver Supporter freighter and arrange island lodging, entry documents and evacuation insurance in advance.

Visiting Pitcairn means coordinating a flight to Mangareva, a limited-berth freighter voyage and accommodation booked in advance. There is no airport on Pitcairn: most visitors cross from French Polynesia aboard the government-chartered MV Silver Supporter. Check the sailing, flights, entry eligibility, lodging and evacuation insurance together before paying for any part of the trip.

How do you get to Pitcairn Island?

Most visitors travel first to Tahiti, take an Air Tahiti flight to Mangareva (GMR), transfer from the airport by ferry to Rikitea, then board the MV Silver Supporter. Mangareva and Pitcairn are about 300 km apart, according to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Pitcairn has no airport, and the final approach is by sea.

  1. Check the Tahiti–Mangareva flight. The ship schedule is arranged around the Tuesday flight, but verify flight and sailing dates directly before committing to either.
  2. Secure a ship berth and island accommodation. The crossing has limited passenger capacity, and accommodation must be arranged ahead of time.
  3. Plan the Mangareva transfer and crossing. From the airport, travellers take a ferry to Rikitea and board at the wharf. The crossing is described as about 32 hours.
  4. Build in contingency time. Weather and sea conditions can disrupt the timetable. The tourism legal page says there are generally only two flights weekly between Mangareva and Tahiti, so a tight onward connection risks missed travel if the ship is delayed.

The islands’ official tourism site advertises 2026–2027 voyages with Pitcairn stays of 4, 11 or 18 days. Those are island-stay options, not a promise of a fixed end-to-end journey time: flight connections, weather and the sailing schedule affect the total time away.

What is the Silver Supporter voyage like?

Visit Pitcairn describes the vessel as a “working freighter not a luxury cruise ship.” The official tourism page lists 12 passenger berths in six twin-share cabins. The ship is the transport link, not a conventional cruise experience; meals, tea and coffee, bedding and towels are included aboard the fare listed on the booking page.

Landing on Pitcairn is by longboat because there is no harbour or jetty. Conditions at sea and the transfer itself can make landing difficult, particularly for travellers with limited mobility. Consider whether you can manage the boat transfer and uneven terrain before booking.

What does a trip to Pitcairn cost?

The official tourism booking page lists a return fare of NZ$6,000 per person from Mangareva. This current-page price includes meals, tea and coffee, bedding and towels aboard, and transfers to and from Pitcairn accommodation. It does not include the Tahiti–Mangareva flights, island lodging, landing and passport fees, travel insurance or medical insurance. The site lists homestays from US$70 per person per day; confirm the rate for your dates.

Trip item Published detail
Silver Supporter return fare NZ$6,000 per person from Mangareva; official tourism booking-page price accessed in 2026. Flights, island accommodation, landing and passport fees, and insurance are excluded.
Homestay From US$70 per person per day on the official tourism booking page accessed in 2026; confirm the rate for your dates.
Medical evacuation insurance At least US$500,000 in medical evacuation coverage is specified by the official tourism booking page accessed in 2026.

The listed figures are not a complete trip quote: flights, lodging choice, fees and insurance change the total. Ask for a written quote covering your exact sailing and accommodation dates, and recheck availability and prices before booking.

Where can you stay on Pitcairn?

There are no hotels, and lodging must be booked in advance, the FCDO advises. The tourism site lists full-board homestays, studio apartments and furnished homes with self-catering options. These differ in service and independence, but the official material does not provide like-for-like prices for every type, so request availability and a quote for the dates you plan to visit.

Do you need a visa to visit Pitcairn?

Entry depends on the length and terms of the visit. The Pitcairn Government and tourism guidance distinguish a short visit of up to 14 days from a longer stay. Confirm your eligibility and current requirements with Pitcairn Immigration before booking.

  • Up to 14 days: Travellers arriving and departing on the same vessel may qualify for a short-term visitor route, with the application handled on arrival. This is conditional on eligibility and meeting character, health, travel, insurance and financial-capacity requirements.
  • More than 14 days: A long-term visitor visa is required before travel. The tourism visa page recommends applying at least three months ahead and lists a non-refundable NZ$150 fee; confirm the current form, fee and processing details with immigration.

The FCDO says passports must remain valid for the duration of the stay and have blank pages for stamps. Visitors must complete a landing card. Children aged 15 and under planning visits longer than 14 days should contact immigration before travelling. Travellers arriving from a designated yellow-fever-risk country may need to provide a vaccination certificate; check the current rule for your itinerary.

What health and safety preparations matter?

Medical care on the island is limited, and serious injury may require evacuation. Medical insurance with evacuation cover is compulsory; the tourism booking page specifies at least US$500,000 in medical evacuation coverage. Make sure your policy applies to the trip and meets the stated minimum.

The island’s terrain and transfer require practical preparation. Some paths are steep, narrow, slippery or poorly marked, and cliffs can be unstable. The FCDO says certain trails should only be taken with an islander. Arrange local guidance where required and be realistic about your ability to walk on uneven ground.

  • Bring seasickness medication if you are prone to motion sickness; the official tourism guidance advises travellers to prepare for it.
  • Pack mosquito repellent and a torch, both recommended by the tourism legal page.
  • If you take regular medication, bring extra supplies after discussing the trip with your doctor.
  • Do not assume you can rely on mobile service: Pitcairn has no mobile phone network. Public internet and home Wi-Fi are described in UK travel advice, but access conditions can vary.

How to plan the booking sequence

Because flights, ship berths and island rooms have to line up, treat the visit as one coordinated itinerary rather than separate bookings.

  1. Review the advertised 2026–2027 sailings and the 4-, 11- or 18-day stay that fits your schedule.
  2. Check Air Tahiti flight availability between Tahiti and Mangareva for the relevant dates.
  3. Confirm a Silver Supporter berth and the precise fare and inclusions for your voyage.
  4. Reserve Pitcairn accommodation for the matching dates.
  5. Check entry requirements with Pitcairn Immigration, including whether your stay needs a long-term visa.
  6. Arrange medical and evacuation insurance that meets the island’s stated requirement.
  7. Allow buffer days around the sea crossing and flights, then confirm the full itinerary and prices with the relevant booking contacts.

Pitcairn Tourism says specialist travel agents can help coordinate flights, transit accommodation, ship berths and island lodging. That may be useful if you want assistance joining the separate legs into a workable schedule.
