Plan around the island you are actually visiting: check its ferry route and current sailing status, confirm which services are available near your arrival point, and carry enough supplies for your day. Scottish islands differ sharply in ferry access and amenities, so do not assume that what is available on a larger island will be available on a smaller or outlying one.
Start with the specific island and settlement
The Scottish Government’s Scottish Islands Typology compares island groups using factors including population, local amenities and ferry connections. It identifies groups with low or lowest access to amenities and ferry services. Those broad categories are useful for setting expectations, but they do not tell you what will be open on a particular date or how far a service is from your landing point.

Before choosing a destination, check the exact settlement and the services you will need: accommodation, shops, toilets, fuel, drinking-water refills and local transport. Confirm opening information directly where possible. An island may have a service somewhere without it being nearby, open during your visit or suitable for your onward journey.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerify the ferry and onward journey close to departure
Use the operating ferry company’s current information for the route you intend to travel. Check the sailing date, service status, timetable, reservation or vehicle-booking requirements and what happens if your sailing changes. Then confirm onward transport from the arrival point; a ferry landing does not guarantee that a bus, taxi or other connection will be available.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, CalMac’s Ardmhor–Eriskay route page tells passengers to check the latest service status. Treat the live operator information as more useful for a specific trip than a timetable copied elsewhere. Leave flexibility in your plans rather than building a tight connection around a sailing that may change.
The Scottish Government’s 2024 typology overview illustrates how much access can vary: it records an average of 0.3 scheduled ferry crossings per day to Canna and Sanday in winter 2023/4, with an average crossing just under three hours. This is historical context, not a current timetable. Transport Scotland’s Vessels and Ports Plan sets out a long-term plan to 2045 for investments considered necessary to address reliability and resilience challenges; it is not a prediction about whether a particular sailing will run.

Pack for limited shops, refills and facilities
Take enough drinking water and provisions for the planned activity, including a reasonable margin if your route or return is delayed. Do not assume a shop, fuel outlet, toilet or refill point will be open or close to where you arrive. VisitScotland notes that refill points may be limited or unavailable on some routes and advises carrying sufficient water.

For a walk
Match your navigation and clothing to the route, forecast and conditions. VisitScotland recommends a map and compass, warm layers, waterproofs, a headtorch and emergency snacks. A paper map covering the actual island and walking route can be useful; do not rely on a generic Scotland map for route detail. Check weather and daylight, and do not set out on a route that exceeds your experience or available time.
Respect access rules, residents and the landscape
The Scottish Outdoor Access Code is built around three principles: respect other people, care for the environment and take responsibility for your actions. Access rights come with responsibilities, and local restrictions may apply. Check current signs, reserve notices and local guidance on access, parking and fires before setting out. VisitScotland’s camping guidance explains responsible access and wild camping in Scotland.

- Give residents privacy and keep access routes clear; do not treat local facilities as an unlimited convenience service.
- Leave gates as you find them, give livestock space and avoid damaging vegetation.
- Take all litter and belongings away, and use toilets where available. If outdoor toileting is unavoidable, follow reliable guidance and stay at least 30 metres from open water.
- Check whether parking, access or fire restrictions apply at your intended location.
Choose an overnight stay that fits the place
A managed campsite is the more practical choice if you need toilets, water or other facilities. Wild camping guidance applies to most unenclosed land, subject to the Access Code and local rules; it is not a blanket permission to camp anywhere. Choose a low-impact location and avoid enclosed fields, homes and private gardens, sensitive ground, and busy areas already showing strain.

If wild camping, keep your group small and quiet, move elsewhere if a spot is busy, take away all litter and belongings, and use a stove where possible. Avoid fires in dry periods and sensitive locations, and follow local fire advice. The Scottish Government’s access rights and responsibilities guidance reproduces camping advice that includes these practices.

Overnight arrangements can be locality-specific. On the Ardmhor–Eriskay route page, CalMac relays a Western Isles Council request for campervans, motorhomes and caravans to stay at official campsites or designated overnight spots. Apply that advice to its stated locality, and check the relevant local authority for rules elsewhere rather than assuming it applies uniformly across Scotland.
Give wildlife space and follow site advice
Wildlife viewing is a privilege, not a reason to approach or pursue animals. NatureScot’s protected-species guidance advises people not to intentionally or recklessly disturb protected wildlife. If an animal’s behaviour shows that your presence is causing significant disturbance, move away. Take extra care during breeding seasons, keep dogs under close control, and follow wardens’ instructions and site signs. For marine wildlife, use the Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code.
