How to Visit a Remote Island Responsibly and Protect Wildlife

Remote-island rules vary by destination. Learn how to check access, prepare pest-free gear, give wildlife space, and leave no waste.

To visit a remote island responsibly, first confirm that landing is allowed and learn the exact rules from the authority that manages it. Then prevent pests from hitchhiking in your gear, stay on approved routes, give wildlife ample space, and take everything you bring back out. There is no universal island rulebook: permits, closures, landing zones, vessel requirements, and wildlife distances vary by place and season.

Before you go: check access and local rules

“Remote” does not mean open to visitors. Identify the island’s managing authority and check its current rules before booking and again before travel. Confirm whether visitors may land, and whether you need a permit or an authorized operator. Check for seasonal or area closures, allowed visiting hours, group limits, approved landing sites, and restrictions on pets, drones, fires, camping, food, or water activities.

Rules in one region are examples, not templates. For instance, Parks Australia’s Coral Sea island guidance sets sunrise-to-sunset access, prohibits camping and pets, bans fires, restricts water sports within 500 metres, and prohibits drones above or within 100 metres of an island. It also limits access above the high-water mark and sets a 15-person-at-once and 30-person-daily cap for islands covered by that guidance. These conditions apply to the specified Coral Sea islands, not remote islands generally.

Ask operators specific questions

If you plan to travel with a tour, ask how the operator handles permits, visitor and vessel biosecurity, landing sites, group size, wildlife distances, and signs of disturbance. A responsible operator should be able to explain its procedures and how it responds if wildlife is alarmed. In the UK, government guidance recommends using a responsible marine-wildlife tour company and names the WiSe Wildlife Safe scheme; that is a UK reference, not a guarantee or international standard.

Prepare your gear to prevent pest introductions

Seeds, soil, insects, and small animals can travel in footwear, clothing, bags, and vessels. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) summarizes its pest-prevention advice as “Check, Clean, Close”: inspect gear for pests, clean away soil and seeds, and keep bags zipped shut. Follow any checklist or treatment required by the island’s authority. Even equipment kept at home or in a garage can conceal pests.

  • Clean footwear and outdoor gear, paying attention to soles, seams, pockets, and other places where seeds or soil can lodge.
  • Inspect bags and equipment for insects, rodents, and other stowaways; close bags after checking them.
  • Pack food in sealed containers and follow any local food or packaging rules.
  • If bringing a boat or kayak, check it for pests too. DOC specifically advises checking for rats, mice, ants, and skinks. Some Fiordland island visits require a Clean Vessel Pass; Coral Sea islands require vessels to be treated by a licensed pest controller. These are location-specific requirements.

Consult the destination’s authority for the exact process: cleaning or inspection steps that are adequate for one island may not meet another island’s entry requirements.

Choose a visit style that fits the rules

Self-guided access is appropriate only where it is permitted and you can reliably follow the local requirements. A guided visit may help with permits, biosecurity checks, landing choices, and reading signs of wildlife disturbance, but a guide or certification does not mean the visit has no impact.

When comparing options, check whether access is permitted and the operator is authorized; how visitors and vessels are checked for pests; how the group handles wildlife distances and disturbance; whether it uses approved landing zones and routes; and what local training or accreditation the operator has. Do not treat a credential as a substitute for the island’s rules.

On the island: stay on approved routes and watch where you walk

Follow signs and instructions from staff or guides. Use formed tracks, boardwalks, and approved landing areas, and respect any high-tide boundary. Walk slowly and quietly, scanning the ground for burrows, eggs, and chicks. Eggs and young birds can be camouflaged, and stepping off a route can damage a nest or disturb a colony.

Land and launch away from birds, and keep clear of nesting colonies. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority warns that disturbed adults may leave nests, exposing eggs and chicks to heat, cold, or predators; repeated disturbance can reduce breeding success or drive colonies away. If birds show alarm, withdraw calmly.

How close can you get to wildlife?

There is no single safe viewing distance for every island or species. Follow the destination’s current rules and move farther away if an animal reacts. Do not feed, touch, chase, call, surround, or follow wildlife. Avoid flash photography and loud activity. Leaving, repeatedly calling, swooping, or changing behavior are signs that you should retreat and give the animal more space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official guidance illustrates why a distance must be read in context. England’s government code says to try to stay at least 100 metres (330 feet) from marine wildlife and farther if needed. New Zealand subantarctic guidance says to stay no closer than 5 metres, while noting that this can still be too close for some species. South Georgia’s 2024–25 guidelines set different minimums for different wildlife groups; consult current-season guidance there rather than relying on an older figure. None of these examples establishes a universal minimum for other destinations.

If an animal approaches you, remain calm and move away slowly. Do not touch or move young animals: they may be alone normally. Keep your distance even if an animal appears comfortable with people.

Boats, water activities, and night lighting

Check local approach and speed rules before taking a vessel near marine wildlife. England’s guidance calls for speeds under 6 knots and a distance of 100 metres around marine wildlife. It also advises keeping a steady speed and direction if dolphins, whales, or porpoises approach to surf a boat’s wake, and letting them leave when they choose. These are England-specific recommendations.

Enter the water only at designated access points and avoid sensitive resting, feeding, breeding, and nesting areas, as well as seagrass and other sensitive habitats. Carry small craft across sensitive areas rather than dragging them; secure diving hoses and gauges so they do not trail over habitat.

On islands and vessels where lighting rules apply, use only the minimum light needed for navigation and safety. DOC warns that night lights can disorient seabirds and cause fatal collisions. Coral Sea guidance also restricts non-essential vessel lighting; check the relevant authority for the rules where you are going.

Leave no waste, and report wildlife in trouble

Pack out rubbish, food scraps, and fishing equipment. Do not bury rubbish or leave food because it seems natural or biodegradable; some island rules explicitly require visitors to remove biodegradable waste too. Leftover food and gear can create hazards and attract animals or pests.

If you see a sick, dead, stranded, or distressed animal, do not touch or move it. Keep other visitors away, note the location, and report it through the destination’s official wildlife or biosecurity channel. Reporting contacts and procedures vary by place, so use the local authority’s instructions rather than a number published for another jurisdiction.

A practical packing and departure checklist

  • Save the managing authority’s current access, permit, closure, landing, and wildlife guidance.
  • Clean and inspect footwear, clothing, bags, and other gear; close bags and use sealed food containers.
  • Check vessel-specific rules and complete any required inspection, treatment, or pass process.
  • Pack compact binoculars for viewing wildlife at a distance. Binoculars or camera zoom can help you observe without approaching, but they do not replace local distance limits or access restrictions.
  • Bring a way to carry out all rubbish, food scraps, and fishing equipment.
  • Before leaving, check your belongings for seeds, soil, and pests so you do not carry them to another island or back home.
