To view your webcam in a browser, open a camera-enabled webpage, allow that site to use the camera, and wait for its preview. If no image appears, check four separate points: the site’s saved browser permission, your operating system’s camera privacy setting, the camera selected on the page or in the browser, and whether another application is already using the device.
Start with a camera preview page
- Open the video-call, webcam-test or camera-preview webpage you want to use.
- When the browser asks to use your camera, choose Allow. Some browsers offer a temporary option such as “Allow this time” as well as a setting that remains active while you visit the site.
- If the page has a camera menu, select the intended webcam. This matters when a laptop camera, USB webcam, monitor camera or virtual camera is connected at the same time.
- Wait for the live preview. A browser camera stream normally appears only after the page requests access and your permission is granted.
If there is no prompt, do not assume the webcam is defective. The site may already be saved as blocked or allowed. Inspect the site permission, change or clear it, then reload the page.
Chrome on a computer
Allow or switch the camera
In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera. The Camera page lists sites you have allowed or blocked and lets you choose the default camera. Change the rule for the site you are trying to use, or remove its saved entry so Chrome asks again on the next visit.
Chrome can show choices including Allow while visiting the site, Allow this time and Never allow. A previous “Never allow” decision prevents a new prompt until you change that site rule.

When Chrome sends you to device settings
If camera access is disabled at the computer level, Chrome may direct you to the operating-system settings. Enable camera access there, then follow Chrome’s instruction to quit or restart the browser if it appears. On a work or school computer, an administrator may control this setting, so you might not be able to change it yourself.
After changing a setting
Return to the page, refresh it, and restart the call or camera test if necessary. If several cameras are listed, choose the physical device you want rather than leaving a virtual or disconnected camera selected.
Firefox
Review saved camera permissions
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions, find Camera, and select Settings…. Firefox shows the sites with saved camera decisions. Change a blocked site to allow it, or remove the entry to make Firefox ask again.
Use the address-bar controls
Firefox’s permissions panel beside the address bar can clear an existing allowed or blocked status. After clearing it, reload the page and respond to the new request. If no prompt appears, open the page’s Page Info > Permissions panel and set the camera permission there.

Edge on Windows
Enable Windows camera access first
Open Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and confirm that camera access is enabled. Windows access and website access are different controls: enabling the camera for Edge does not automatically grant every website permission to use it.
Allow the individual website in Edge
Visit the page and accept its camera prompt. To inspect existing rules, open Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site Permissions > All sites, select the site, and review its Camera setting.
Check desktop-app access
Windows may govern Edge through the broader Let desktop apps access your camera control rather than a per-app Microsoft Store toggle. If that desktop-app switch is off, a site can remain unusable even when Edge’s site rule says Allow.
Safari on a Mac
Set the site to Allow
In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera. Find the target site and set it to Allow, then refresh the webpage. Safari’s labels can differ between releases; these menu names come from support instructions last updated August 2, 2020, so use the closest current wording if your version looks different.

Confirm the right device
If the page offers a camera selector, choose the webcam you intend to show. macOS privacy controls can also prevent browser access; review the camera permission for Safari in system settings if the site is allowed but no stream appears.
Test the webcam with WebRTC
A WebRTC constraints test can separate a browser-access problem from a particular service’s compatibility issue. Open the test page, choose Get Media, allow camera access, and wait for the video stream. A displayed stream confirms that the browser can obtain camera and microphone media through WebRTC.
That result is limited: it does not prove that every video service, browser configuration or device will work. If the test succeeds but one meeting service fails, investigate that service’s own permissions, supported browsers and account requirements.
Diagnose a missing or blank preview
No permission prompt appears
- Open the browser’s camera settings and inspect the saved rule for the exact site origin.
- Change a blocked rule or clear it, reload the page, and answer the prompt.
- In Firefox, use the address-bar permissions panel or Page Info > Permissions.
- On managed work or school devices, ask the administrator if policy controls camera access.
The browser says permission is allowed, but no camera is available
- Check the operating system’s camera privacy control. Windows requires both system access and Edge’s per-site permission.
- Confirm the webcam is connected and recognized by the computer.
- Close other applications that may hold the camera, such as another meeting client or camera utility, then reload or restart the call.
- Restart the browser or computer after changing system-level settings when the browser does not immediately detect the change.
The wrong camera is shown
Open the page’s camera selector and choose the desired device. In Chrome, also review the default-camera choice under Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera. Disconnecting an unused camera can help identify which entry corresponds to the physical device.

The test works but a specific service does not
A successful WebRTC test demonstrates browser access, not universal service compatibility. Check the failing service’s own camera selector, supported-browser list, account restrictions and permission rule. Do not treat a passing test as proof that unsupported hardware or every application will work.
The preview freezes or remains black
- Reload after changing permission; a page may not re-request the stream until refreshed.
- Switch to another listed camera and back to the intended one.
- Close competing camera applications.
- Verify that the operating system has not globally disabled camera access.
Choosing the right fix
| What you see | Check first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No prompt or a previously blocked site | Saved browser permission for that site | A stored decision can suppress a new prompt. |
| Permission is allowed but no device appears | Operating-system privacy, connection and other camera apps | System access and hardware availability are separate from website permission. |
| Several cameras are listed | Page selector or Chrome’s default-camera setting | The browser may be using a different physical or virtual camera. |
| WebRTC test succeeds but one service fails | That service’s requirements and settings | The test proves limited browser access, not compatibility with every service. |
When you need a replacement webcam
Consider a USB webcam only after checking permissions, system privacy, connection and competing applications. The available guidance does not establish model-specific compatibility or test particular webcam brands, so choose hardware according to your computer’s ports and operating-system support rather than assuming a named model will work.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not display your private, local webcam feed. It can be useful when you need a repeatable image of a camera-test webpage or other public page instead of opening a browser manually. Before capture, it accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and timeouts are not billed, and cache hits are free; response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a browser show my webcam without asking?
Only if that site already has a saved permission. Otherwise the browser should request access; inspect or clear the site rule if no prompt appears.
Why does allowing Edge in Windows not fix the website?
Windows camera access and Edge’s per-site website permission are separate. Enable the system control, then allow the individual site in Edge.
Does a successful webcam test guarantee every video call will work?
No. It confirms limited WebRTC camera and microphone access. A service can still impose its own browser, device or account requirements.
