To capture an entire website homepage, not just the part currently visible, use the browser’s full-page command. In Chrome, open DevTools Device Mode, choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. In Firefox, right-click the page, choose Take Screenshot, then select Save full page. Use the visible or viewport option when you only need what is on screen.
The distinction matters: a viewport screenshot ends at the current window, while a full-page capture includes content below the fold. The instructions below cover saving an image, copying it, selecting one element, and automating captures without running a browser yourself.
Choose the capture you actually need
Decide the output before opening a tool. A homepage can be captured as a visible viewport, a stitched full-page image, or a single element such as a hero section. A browser is convenient for one-off work; an API is better for repeatable or automated jobs.
| Method | Extent | Output and control | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Full page, viewport, or CSS-selected element | PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; waits, device settings, CSS, JavaScript, authentication, blocking, caching, and webhooks | Automated captures and clean images; cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed |
| Chrome DevTools | Viewport or entire page | PNG download with device and viewport simulation | Fast manual capture in Chrome |
| Firefox screenshot UI | Visible area or entire page | Save a PNG or copy it to the clipboard | Manual capture with no setup |
Firefox DevTools :screenshot |
Page or selected element | Delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, clipboard, full-page, and CSS-selector options | Timed states and precise element captures |
Browser-native tools are sufficient for a one-time homepage image. Extensions such as GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture are optional; its Chrome Web Store listing records version 8.9 on September 24, 2026, but extension interfaces and availability can change.

Capture a full homepage in Chrome
- Open the homepage in Chrome.
- Open DevTools and switch to Device Mode. Select a desktop or mobile device preset, or set the viewport dimensions you want represented in the image.
- On the Device Mode toolbar, open More options.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome downloads an image containing content outside the current viewport.
- For only the currently visible area, repeat the process and choose Capture screenshot instead.
Device Mode affects the rendered layout, so a desktop viewport and a simulated phone viewport can produce different navigation, column widths, and responsive breakpoints. Set the dimensions before capturing. A full-size command captures the page at that configured width; it does not mean “every possible responsive layout.”
When Chrome’s result is not what you expected
- If the full-size command is missing, make sure DevTools Device Mode is active and use the Device Mode toolbar’s More options menu.
- If the homepage is unusually long, confirm that the downloaded image opens completely before sharing it. Very large raster images can consume substantial memory in image editors.
- Pages that load content while you scroll can change during capture. A browser-native full-page image is not a guarantee that every delayed animation or request appears exactly as it would during a manual scroll.
Capture a homepage in Firefox
- Open the homepage in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select Save full page for the entire document, or Save visible for the current viewport.
- Choose Download to save a PNG file, or choose Copy to place the image on the clipboard for pasting into another application.
Firefox’s visible and full-page choices are separate captures. If you need a file for an issue report, select Download; if you need to paste the image into a document or chat, select Copy.
Use Firefox DevTools for a delay or one element
Firefox DevTools provides a :screenshot Web Console helper when the standard menu is not precise enough. Its documented controls include a delay, device-pixel ratio, clipboard output, a filename, full-page capture, and a CSS selector.
- Open the homepage and open Firefox DevTools.
- Open the Web Console and run the screenshot helper with the option you need, such as
:screenshot --fullpagefor content outside the window. - Use the selector option when you need one element and its descendants, for example
:screenshot --selector "#hero". - Add a delay when a hover state, menu, or other timed state must appear before the image is taken. Set a filename or clipboard option according to where the result should go.
Choose a new filename for each capture. Firefox documentation warns that a later screenshot using the same filename overwrites the earlier image. A selector capture is bounded to the selected element; it is not a substitute for a full-page capture.

Edge, Safari, and phones
An institutional 2022 handout describes Edge’s Web Capture command from the right-click menu, with options to select an area, copy it, or save it. Treat that as secondary guidance: Edge labels and placement can change, so check the current Edge menu on your installation.
Current, platform-specific Safari and mobile instructions are not established here. Do not assume a desktop workflow applies unchanged to an iPhone, iPad, or Android browser. On those devices, use the screenshot and full-page controls exposed by the current operating system and browser version, and verify the resulting image before relying on it.
Prepare the page for a more reliable image
- Open the exact homepage URL, including any language or campaign path that matters.
- Set the desired desktop or mobile width before capturing; responsive pages can rearrange content at different widths.
- Allow important fonts, images, and navigation to finish loading. If the page reveals content only after scrolling, expect the result to vary.
- Dismiss menus or hover states that you do not want in the final image. Conversely, use Firefox’s delay control when a timed state is the purpose of the capture.
- Check the image at 100% after saving. Look for cut-off sections, missing lazy-loaded images, consent dialogs, or a blank lower portion.
Native browser captures preserve whatever the page displays, including consent banners, newsletter dialogs, and chat widgets. That can be useful for documenting a real user view, but it is undesirable for a clean design review or a public image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the homepage you need. Keep the URL encoded when it contains query parameters or special characters. The Python example allows up to 90 seconds for a response; asynchronous jobs are preferable when you do not want a request to remain open.

Options for production captures
ScreenshotNeo exposes 63 options, so you can keep a browser-like capture reproducible instead of adding one-off scripts:
- Layout and extent: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selector element capture, 12 device presets, any custom viewport, dark mode, and retina scale.
- Rendering: custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, and waits for a selector, a delay, or network idle.
- Documents: PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges.
- Network and identity: ad, tracker, request, or resource-type blocking; custom headers, cookies, user agents, and Authorization; timezone and geolocation.
- Delivery and scale: a cache with a TTL you choose, signed links for public
<img>tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. - Migration: parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which reduces changes when switching.
For AI-assisted workflows, the MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The image stops at the fold
You selected the visible or viewport command. In Chrome, return to Device Mode’s More options and choose Capture a full size screenshot. In Firefox, select Save full page.
A popup or consent banner covers the homepage
Browser-native tools capture the page as displayed. Close the overlay before capturing, or use ScreenshotNeo’s cleanup behavior when you need a clean image without known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets.
Lower sections are blank or images are missing
The page may load content lazily or after a delay. Wait for the page to settle, check the saved image, and try again. For repeatable automation, configure a selector wait, delay, or network-idle wait and enable full-page lazy-image loading.
The page looks different at another width
Responsive CSS changes the layout at breakpoints. Set the intended Device Mode viewport, device preset, or API viewport explicitly and keep that setting consistent between captures.

A Firefox capture replaced an earlier file
The same filename was reused. Save the next image under a new name; Firefox can overwrite a previous capture when the filename matches.
The API response is not the expected image
Verify the access key, URL encoding, and requested output settings. Check X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish a clean capture from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit. For long-running batches, use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks instead of holding a single request open.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The output is too large to edit
Reduce the viewport width or retina scale, capture only the required CSS element, or use image resizing. A full homepage at a high device-pixel ratio can be much larger than a viewport PNG.
Which method should you use?
- Choose Chrome when you already work in Chrome and need a quick full-page PNG at a particular simulated device size.
- Choose Firefox’s screenshot menu when you want a simple Save or Copy action without configuring DevTools.
- Choose Firefox DevTools when a delay, selector, filename, or clipboard control is central to the task.
- Choose ScreenshotNeo when captures must be clean, repeatable, authenticated, scheduled, delivered by webhook, or generated by an AI agent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a full-page screenshot the same as printing a webpage to PDF?
No. A full-page screenshot is a raster image such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Printing produces a paginated document, while ScreenshotNeo can generate either an image or a PDF when you need both formats.
Why can two full-page captures of the same homepage look different?
Dynamic pages can change while they load: animations, delayed requests, personalized content, and lazy-loaded sections may resolve at different times. Use a consistent viewport and an explicit wait, then inspect the final file.
