How to View a User’s Effective Permissions for a File or Folder in Windows 11 and 10

To check what a particular account can do with a file or folder, open its Properties > Security > Advanced > Effective Access tab, select the account, and choose View effective access. Windows displays the access rights that apply to that account, including permissions gained through groups or inherited from a parent folder.

  5. Select Select a user, enter or locate the account you want to inspect, and confirm your selection.

  6. Select View effective access. Review the permission results and any access-limitation information displayed.

Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows Explorer demonstration. Although that demonstration uses a Windows Server scenario, it shows the security-dialog workflow; Microsoft’s access control overview covers the underlying Windows concepts relevant to Windows 10 and 11.

How to interpret the results

Access can come from groups and parent folders

Windows associates object permissions with security principals—users or groups. A user can receive access because they belong to a group that has permission, even if the user’s account is not listed by name on the object’s access control list. Files and folders can also inherit permissions marked as inheritable from a parent folder. Effective Access helps account for these combined sources rather than showing only entries that name the selected user.

Network shares may have more than one access gate

For a file accessed through a network share, the file or folder’s permissions are not necessarily the only factor. Share permissions form a separate layer, and Microsoft’s central access policy demonstration shows a case where share and NTFS permissions allow access but a central access policy limits it. Review the relevant share and policy context when investigating network access; do not treat the object’s NTFS permissions alone as a complete report for every server or sign-in situation.

Object permissions are not all Windows privileges

Effective Access concerns access to a particular object and its properties. It is not a report of every privilege assigned to an account: user rights, such as the right to sign in or back up files, are a different category. Microsoft defines permissions as the type of access granted to a user or group for an object or object property in its Access Control Overview.

Use AccessChk from the command line

Microsoft Sysinternals AccessChk is an alternative for administrators who prefer a console. Its documentation says that specifying an account and path reports that account’s effective permissions; the -v option displays specific accesses granted. For example, Microsoft’s documented syntax includes:

Which method should you use?

Method Best suited to How it presents access
Effective Access in File Explorer Checking a selected user against one file or folder through a graphical dialog. Displays permission results and may show information about access limitations.
AccessChk Administrators who want to query an account and path from the console; its documentation also describes optional recursive checks. Reports permission flags; add -v to see specific accesses granted.

The built-in tab is the straightforward choice for a one-off check. Use AccessChk when a command-line query better fits your administration workflow.
