How to Vibe Code a Website in 8 Steps

A practical eight-step guide to planning, generating, refining, testing, hosting, and publishing a website with an AI coding tool.

To vibe code a website, turn your idea into a clear brief, generate a first version, inspect its structure, refine it in focused passes, add only necessary features, test real journeys, choose hosting deliberately, and publish with a recovery plan. These eight stages are a practical workflow—not a rule every AI builder follows in exactly the same way.

1. Decide what the website needs to do

Before opening a builder, write down the site’s purpose, who it is for, and the main action you want visitors to take. That might be reading an article, contacting a business, booking an appointment, or buying a product. A small first site or prototype is easier to evaluate than an expansive project with requirements you have not validated.

  • Purpose: What should the site help visitors accomplish?
  • Audience: Who will use it, and what do they need to know or do?
  • Main action: What is the most important next step for a visitor?

Keeping these answers specific gives the builder a target and gives you a standard for judging its output.

2. Write a useful brief before generating

A prompt that names the site’s purpose, intended visitors, pages, essential content, functionality, and visual direction gives the tool more to work with than a request to “make a website.” TechRadar recommends spelling out the purpose, pages, aesthetic, colors, and fonts in its walkthrough of vibe coding a first website. Lovable’s documentation likewise advises clarifying the purpose, target users, screens, and core functionality before asking its builder to generate a site.

Use this as a starting prompt, then adapt it to your project:

Create a website for [purpose], for [intended visitors]. Include a home page, an about page, and a contact page. The main action should be [desired action]. Include [essential content or function]. Use these brand colors: [colors], and this visual direction: [brief description]. Make the navigation clear and provide a preview before adding optional features.

Provide your real brand assets, copy, and requirements where they matter. A prompt is a starting specification, not a guarantee that the generated site will be complete or ready to publish.

3. Inspect the pages and navigation first

When the first version appears, compare it with your brief before spending time on visual polish. Check that the requested pages exist, the navigation connects them sensibly, and important content and actions are present. If a core page or feature is missing, ask for it directly—for example, request a contact form or booking page—rather than hoping a later design prompt will fix the structure. This is a practical recommendation in TechRadar’s workflow guide.

A builder may describe its output as a working website, but that describes the product’s workflow, not independent proof of completeness, quality, or production readiness. Lovable’s own page says, “Describe what you want and Lovable turns it into a polished website — design, content, and hosting included.” Treat that as the company’s product description, not a guaranteed result.

4. Refine the visual design in small passes

Once the structure is sound, make bounded requests about one area at a time: copy, layout, typography, colors, spacing, image placement, or buttons. Review the preview after each meaningful change so you can tell whether the edit helped and avoid layering vague instructions on top of one another. If your logo or brand imagery matters, supply those assets instead of accepting generic placeholders.

Lovable says its builder supports refinement through chat or code edits, according to its product page. In any tool, direct visual or code editing can be a practical alternative when another broad prompt would risk changing unrelated parts of the site.

5. Add only the features the site needs

Optional integrations can add complexity, so choose them to solve a real requirement rather than because they are available.

  • Content management: A few pages that rarely change may not need a CMS. A site that publishes or updates content regularly may benefit from a dedicated editing workflow.
  • Online sales: For a store, confirm that the platform supports the payment integration you need. Test successful and failed transactions, along with the related confirmation or error messages, before launch.
  • Other integrations: Add features such as accounts, databases, maps, or payment tools only when they serve the site’s purpose.

TechRadar’s website-building guide covers choosing features such as a CMS or ecommerce functionality; the right choice depends on what your site actually does.

6. Test user journeys and failure cases

Try the main visitor journey on desktop and mobile, then check the pieces around it: navigation, links, forms, and error states. A form should not only look right; submit it and confirm what happens when required information is missing or a request fails. For a site with accounts or user data, test who can access which actions and data, not just what the interface displays.

TechRadar’s deployment guidance for vibe-coded apps recommends testing beyond the happy path, including failed API requests and concurrent edits, and checking access controls and database rules. Those checks matter most when your site includes data or interactive services; a simple informational site has a smaller set of journeys to verify. Test the functions your actual site provides, and do not treat a polished preview as a substitute for checking them.

7. Choose hosting, domain, and code ownership deliberately

Built-in hosting can reduce setup work, while exporting code can provide more portability at the cost of additional deployment and maintenance effort. TechRadar describes this convenience-versus-portability trade-off in its deployment guide. Neither approach is automatically best: consider what you are comfortable operating after launch, as well as what the site needs.

Decision What to check
Hosting Whether the builder includes hosting or you must deploy elsewhere, and who handles ongoing operations.
Code ownership and portability Whether you can export the code and use version control, and how much setup that requires.
Domain How a custom domain is connected and whether your chosen plan permits it.
Data and integrations Where site data resides and whether the forms, content tools, or payment integrations you need are supported.
Costs and limits Current plan prices, usage limits, and data or export terms for the specific provider.

Features, prices, domain rules, and export terms vary by provider and can change. Confirm them directly with the platform before you commit; do not assume a setup is free, permanent, or portable.

8. Publish, monitor, and keep a rollback route

Connect your domain using your host’s current instructions and verify SSL if the host requires you to configure it; TechRadar includes domain connection and SSL checks in its website workflow. For a site that serves real users, keep a separate staging environment where you can check changes before they reach production.

Version history and backups are useful only if you can recover from them. Keep a known-good version, back up important data, and test that restoration works. After publishing, monitor logs and errors so you can spot problems. These practices reduce recovery risk; they cannot guarantee that an outage or data loss will not occur. TechRadar’s deployment guidance discusses separate environments, version control, access protection, and restorable backups.

How to choose a vibe-coding tool

Prompt-first hosted builders, visual builders, and AI-assisted code editors differ in how much code control and operational work they expect from you. The available guidance establishes that hosting convenience and code portability can trade off, but it does not support a neutral feature-by-feature ranking of products. Compare tools against your own needs instead:

  • How much code control do you want, and how comfortable are you maintaining the result?
  • Does the platform provide a preview and hosting, or will you need to arrange deployment?
  • Can you export the code and use version control if you want to move or manage it elsewhere?
  • Does it support the forms, content workflow, or payment integrations the site actually requires?
  • What are its current setup costs, ongoing costs, domain rules, and data terms?

Check those details with the provider before choosing; they are not standardized across tools.

What productivity figures do—and do not—tell you

A 2026 state-of-the-art review by Michels and colleagues reports different findings from different settings: peer-reviewed field experiments reported 26% more tasks per week, independent randomised trials measured a 19% slowdown, and team-level telemetry showed a 441% increase in code-review time. These are not directly comparable estimates of website-building speed, because they came from different measurements and contexts. They do not establish what a beginner should expect when building a website.
