How to Verify YouTube Live Keyframe Intervals in an FFmpeg Command

Calculate the right FFmpeg GOP size for your output frame rate, then verify the actual keyframe spacing with ffprobe.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For YouTube Live, aim for a keyframe every 2 seconds and do not let the interval exceed 4 seconds. In FFmpeg, set the GOP size in frames using the output frame rate—for example, use -g 60 at 30 fps—then inspect the encoded output with ffprobe. The option configures a maximum GOP size; only checking emitted keyframe timestamps tells you whether the output meets the target.

Choose the GOP size from the output frame rate

A GOP size is a number of frames, not a number of seconds. Calculate it as frame rate × desired interval in seconds. For YouTube’s 2-second target, the calculations are:

Output frame rate GOP size for 2 seconds Frames in 4 seconds
24 fps 48 frames 96 frames
30 fps 60 frames 120 frames
60 fps 120 frames 240 frames

YouTube Help explicitly gives the 30 fps example: 60 frames per 2 seconds. The 24 and 60 fps values above are arithmetic conversions of the same interval. Use the frame rate of the output being encoded, not an assumed source rate. For variable-frame-rate output, assess the elapsed timestamps between keyframes rather than relying only on frame counts.

For a 30 fps H.264 output, this command fragment requests a maximum GOP size of 60 frames and closed-GOP encoding:

ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -g 60 -flags +cgop OUTPUT

Replace INPUT and OUTPUT with your filenames or appropriate input and output targets. For another output frame rate, calculate the corresponding GOP size first; for example, a 60 fps output uses 120 frames for a 2-second target.

FFmpeg documents -g as the maximum GOP size. An encoder may insert keyframes sooner, so setting -g does not guarantee that every observed interval is exactly 2 seconds. YouTube Help lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, and CBR in its encoder guidance; choose settings compatible with your selected codec and stream setup. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.

Verify the encoded keyframes with ffprobe

Inspect the output rather than treating the requested FFmpeg setting as proof. FFprobe’s -show_frames option reports frame-level information, including keyframe flags and timestamps. Run:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_frames
  -show_entries frame=key_frame,best_effort_timestamp_time,pict_type
  -of csv=p=0 OUTPUT
  1. Replace OUTPUT with the encoded file or capture you want to check.
  2. In the reported frames, identify frames marked as keyframes and note their best_effort_timestamp_time values.
  3. Measure the elapsed time between each successive keyframe. Aim for about 2 seconds and confirm no gap exceeds 4 seconds.

Pay attention to the start of the stream and to timestamps. If the output is variable frame rate, elapsed time is the meaningful check; a frame-count-only check can misstate the interval.

Fix a Live Control Room keyframe warning

If YouTube Live Control Room reports an incorrect keyframe frequency, adjust the encoder’s keyframe frequency toward one keyframe every 2 seconds, then inspect the emitted output again. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes, and it notes that 60 frames at 30 fps equals 2 seconds. Check both the encoder configuration and the actual output before concluding that the warning is resolved.

  • Interval is too long: Recalculate the GOP size from the actual output frame rate and set the corresponding maximum with -g.
  • Configured value looks right but output does not: Compare keyframe timestamps and flags in FFprobe; a maximum GOP setting alone does not establish the emitted spacing.
  • Keyframe sizing is still reported incorrectly: Review the encoder output and YouTube ingestion path for errors, then recheck the captured or encoded frames.
  • Transcoding-related issue: Ensure the encoding uses a closed GOP, as specified in YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for optimal transcoding.
