Verify the claim and the visual material as two separate questions. Preserve the original post, search distinctive frames for earlier appearances, test the location against several visible landmarks, check timing and event context independently, and document what each check proves—and what it cannot prove.
A genuine photograph or video can be paired with a false caption, reused from an older event, or shown in the wrong country. Conversely, a clip that produces no reverse-search result is not automatically original. A reliable assessment is a chain of independent evidence, not a single tool result.

Start by separating the media from the claim
Write down exactly what is being asserted before you inspect the pixels. A claim may include a place, date, event, actor, casualty count, or eyewitness identity. The file itself answers only some of those questions.
Preserve the post and its context
- Copy the exact caption, including hashtags, spelling, emojis and language.
- Record the account name, profile URL, platform, post URL, publication time and any edit or repost indicators.
- Save the media in its original downloadable form when the platform permits, and capture screenshots showing the post around it.
- Note any stated source, eyewitness, camera owner, news organisation or quoted post.
- Record when you accessed the material, because posts can be deleted, edited or made private.
Do not treat a verified account, a large follower count or widespread repetition as proof. Those details are provenance clues. Ask whether the account plausibly had access to the original material and whether it explains how the file was obtained.

Write separate questions
Use distinct questions such as: “Is this file the same as an earlier upload?”, “Where was it recorded?”, “When was it recorded?”, and “Does it show the event described in the caption?” A positive answer to one does not settle the others.
Bellingcat’s conflict guide, published October 26, 2023, gives the essential warning: “Even if the footage is from the area, it doesn’t mean it is from the same event.” That distinction prevents a location match from being promoted into an event identification.
Search for earlier appearances
Earlier copies are often the fastest way to detect recycled or miscaptioned material. Search more than one service because indexes and matching methods differ.
For a still image
- Run a reverse search on the complete image.
- Crop around a distinctive sign, building, vehicle, crater, skyline or other unusual feature and search the crop separately.
- Try several crops with different aspect ratios. A platform may have added borders, text or a watermark to the copy you found.
- Compare the dates, captions and surrounding context of every promising result. Save the earliest clearly documented appearance and the pages that describe it.
Bellingcat’s guides identify Google Images, Bing Images, Yandex and TinEye as useful reverse-image services. Their indexes are not identical, and interfaces can change, so treat each result as a lead to inspect rather than an automatic verdict.
For a video
- Watch the entire clip once and note scene changes, signs, faces, vehicles, explosions, distinctive damage and moments where the camera is steady.
- Take screenshots at several representative points, including frames before and after the key action.
- Search those frames individually, using both full-frame and tightly cropped versions.
- If the video is on YouTube, Amnesty International’s YouTube DataViewer can generate thumbnails suitable for reverse searching. The European External Action Service’s November 2024 OSINT guidelines also describe extracting keyframes with InVID-WeVerify.
- Compare matches frame by frame. A result may show only a short segment embedded in a longer, edited clip.
Keyframe extraction produces candidate stills; it does not authenticate the video. Select enough frames to cover cuts and changes in viewpoint. A single opening frame may be unrelated stock footage or an inserted reaction shot.
Interpret a match—and a non-match—carefully
An earlier match can demonstrate that the media predates the current post or circulated with a different caption. It can also reveal an original uploader who may provide useful context. Confirm that the pixels, sequence and landmarks really correspond; similar scenes can produce false matches.
A negative search proves very little. Images may not be indexed, may have appeared only in closed groups, or may have been mirrored, cropped, recoloured, zoomed, compressed or overlaid with text. Bellingcat’s beginner and advanced guides caution against relying on reverse search alone.

Test the claimed location
Geolocation is a comparison exercise. Build a list of stable, visible features before opening a map: road curvature, lane markings, signs, building shapes, minarets or towers, utility poles, ridgelines, vegetation, walls and the skyline.
Use several independent landmarks
- Describe each feature without assuming the answer. For example, write “blue road sign with two lines of white text” rather than guessing a city.
- Search maps and street-level imagery for combinations of those features, not just one generic building.
- Check geometry: the order of buildings, the road’s direction, distances between landmarks and the camera’s likely position should agree.
- Compare signs, lane markings and architecture from more than one viewpoint or reference image.
- Save screenshots of the reference material and mark which feature each one supports.
Road signs and scene details can be especially useful. Bellingcat’s advanced guide illustrates comparing such details with mapping imagery. A plausible visual match supports a location assessment, but it does not establish the recording date or the alleged incident.
Handle imperfect map coverage
Street-level imagery may be unavailable, old or blocked in a conflict area. In that case, use satellite views, openly published photographs, road layouts and stable terrain features, while stating the limitation. Do not convert a broad regional resemblance into a precise address.
Establish timing separately from place
Once a location is plausible, ask when the recording was made. The earliest upload you can find is the earliest discoverable instance, not necessarily the original capture. A person may have posted the file privately, deleted it, or uploaded it elsewhere first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use time-sensitive clues
- Weather: cloud cover, rain, snow, haze and wet or dry surfaces.
- Lighting: sun direction, shadow length, artificial lights and dawn or dusk conditions.
- Seasonal signs: leaf cover, crop growth, snowline and clothing.
- Chronology inside the scene: the order of visible blasts, smoke columns, vehicle movement or structural damage.
- Changes to the built environment: a new barrier, demolished building, repaired road or altered sign.
Compare these clues with independent reporting, official records, satellite images or other dated material. Matching weather and signage can strengthen a timeline, but none of those clues alone proves a date.
Check the post’s history
Look for older posts from the same account, quoted posts, edits and replies that reveal when the uploader first encountered the file. Search distinctive phrases from the caption in the original language and in translations. If an account presents a clip as current but an archived page shows the same sequence years earlier, the current-date claim is contradicted even if the location is correct.
Bellingcat’s beginner guide gives this type of example: material presented as current was found to have been posted years before. Record both dates and explain whether they refer to capture, first publication or a later repost.

Match the event, not merely the scenery
An image can be authentic, correctly geolocated and still unrelated to the claimed attack. Search for independent evidence of the specific event: contemporaneous reporting from separate organisations, official statements that identify the same place and time, eyewitness accounts with a clear relationship to the scene, satellite or infrastructure records, and additional imagery showing the same damage.
Test independence
Five articles that all embed one social-media post are one attribution chain, not five independent confirmations. Trace each report back to its first identifiable source. Note whether witnesses are repeating one another, whether a newsroom inspected the original file, and whether the accounts have a direct presence at the location.
Compare sequences and physical effects
For an explosion or attack, compare the order of flashes, smoke, movement and damage across separate recordings. Check whether shadows, smoke direction and debris patterns are physically compatible. These comparisons can expose a clip assembled from different incidents, but they rarely establish a complete account on their own.
Choose the right check for the question
| Check | Useful input | What it may reveal | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse image search | Full image, crop, screenshot or video keyframe | Earlier copies, related images or previous context | No match does not establish originality; services index different material and transformations can evade matching. |
| Keyframe extraction | Supported video URL or file | Candidate still frames to search individually | Extracted frames are leads and do not authenticate a clip. |
| Visual geolocation | Distinctive landmarks plus maps or reference imagery | A plausible place or route | Location does not establish time or event. |
| Source and claim checks | Account, post, caption and publication context | Provenance clues and inconsistencies | A credible publisher or repeated claim is not itself proof. |
| Chronology and corroboration | Post history, time-sensitive scene clues and independent records | Whether the claimed timing and incident fit the evidence | The earliest located upload need not be the original recording. |
Keep an auditable verification record
A conclusion is more useful when another person can reproduce the path from the claim to the evidence. Bellingcat and the Global Legal Action Network’s December 2022 Collection Protocol is an example of documenting source types and verification work; it is not a universal legal or evidentiary standard.
Record each observation
- Original post URL, account, platform and access time.
- File name, download time and any visible or embedded metadata. Metadata can be stripped or changed, so treat it as supporting information rather than proof.
- Every search engine used, the exact search terms, image crops and keyframes.
- URLs and publication dates for earlier appearances and independent reports.
- Map or street-level references, with the landmark each one confirms.
- A short reasoning note linking each observation to a conclusion.
Separate direct observations (“the frame shows a red-roofed building”) from interpretations (“that building is in City X”) and from unresolved possibilities. Preserve screenshots because search results and posts can change.

- Verified: multiple independent checks support a narrowly stated fact.
- Strongly supported: evidence converges, but a material gap remains.
- Plausible: the claim fits available clues without decisive confirmation.
- Unverified or contradicted: evidence is insufficient or conflicts with the claim.
State the scope: “The scene is consistent with this street” is narrower and more defensible than “This proves the attack occurred here.” Explain what would change the assessment, such as an original upload, an unedited file or independent confirmation from the claimed date.

A practical end-to-end checklist
- Preserve the post, file and caption exactly as encountered.
- Write the specific claims: what, where, when and who.
- Assess the account’s provenance and plausible access.
- Extract several representative video frames or make distinctive image crops.
- Run reverse searches across more than one service.
- Investigate earlier appearances and distinguish capture, first upload and repost dates.
- List visible landmarks and test the location against multiple references.
- Check weather, lighting, season, scene chronology and changes in the built environment.
- Seek independent evidence for the specific event, not merely the same attribution.
- Record links, timestamps, searches, screenshots and reasoning.
- Report verified facts, supported inferences and unresolved uncertainty separately.
How to report the result responsibly
Lead with the narrowest conclusion the evidence supports. For example: “The building and road layout are consistent with the identified district, and the same sequence appeared online before the claimed date. I found no independent evidence tying this recording to the reported incident.” This tells readers both what is established and why the larger claim remains open.
Do not expose sensitive details that could identify civilians, reveal a vulnerable witness’s location or help target people. Preserve originals securely, share only what is necessary for the verification purpose, and distinguish a public-interest assessment from a legal determination.
Verification is complete only when the method, evidence and uncertainty are visible. The goal is not to force a yes-or-no label onto every file; it is to show exactly which part of the story the visual material supports.
