After compressing a PDF, check it in four separate ways: compare its properties with the original, inspect the rendered pages, test search and text extraction, and validate a standards profile if the file must meet one. A smaller file alone does not show that content survived intact. Keep the original as your baseline.
What to check after compression
These checks answer different questions, so no single pass is enough for an important document.

- Properties: Did page count, PDF version, fonts, permissions, or declared conformance change unexpectedly?
- Appearance: Do all pages still render with their content, layout, and readable images intact?
- Text: Can you find and extract representative text, including on pages that began as scans?
- Standards: If the file claims or requires PDF/A, PDF/UA, PDF/X, PDF/VT, or PDF/E conformance, does it pass validation for the relevant profile?

Step-by-step verification
1. Preserve the original and record a baseline
Keep an unchanged copy of the source PDF. Before compression, note its page count, PDF version, file size, and any standards or conformance claim. If available, record font information and security permissions too. Adobe’s PDF Properties documentation identifies these as reportable properties. File size is expected to change; a PDF version change may also be intentional, but should be understood rather than assumed harmless.

2. Open and inspect the compressed PDF
Open the saved output in a PDF reader and move through the entire document. For a long file, render every page or inspect each page at a practical zoom. Pay particular attention to charts, fine print, forms, unusual fonts, transparency, and scanned images.
Look for missing or blank pages, clipped content, shifted layouts, substituted or garbled characters, missing objects, and images that have become too soft to read. A standards check or text search cannot establish that every page looks right.

3. Test search and extracted text
Use the reader’s Find command to search for distinctive words from early, middle, and late pages. Select and copy representative paragraphs, then inspect the pasted text for missing words, incorrect characters, or an order that differs from the page.
Scanned pages may contain only images, not a text layer. Adobe’s guidance on PDF accessibility and OCR explains how image-only PDFs can be recognized with OCR. Test scanned pages directly: a successful search on one page does not establish that OCR is complete or accurate throughout the document.

4. Check permissions and relevant properties
Compare the properties available in your PDF tools, including page count, version, fonts, permissions, and declared compliance information. Confirm that copying or text extraction is permitted if the intended audience or workflow needs it. Adobe notes that security settings can interfere with screen readers, which need to copy or extract text for speech.
5. Validate a required standard
Run standards validation only when the PDF has a standards requirement or makes a conformance claim. In Acrobat, use its Verify Conformance workflow for the applicable profile; Adobe describes supported standards and related procedures in PDF/X-, PDF/A-, and PDF/E-compliant files. For a command-line option, veraPDF CLI Validation documents profile selection and reports that identify failed checks.

6. Record the result and recover from failures
For a document that matters or a process you need to repeat, keep a short before-and-after record: file name, compression tool and version, settings, page count, file size, representative searches, pages inspected, and any conformance result. If a check fails, return to the preserved original and adjust compression settings; do not make the questionable output your new baseline. Adobe’s optimizer controls include image, font, and transparency settings, although exact options vary by product version and tier.
