A wrong asset URL is different from a single-page app route that needs a hosting rewrite.
Start with the request made by the deployed page
Reproduce the problem at the production or preview URL, including the exact route and any subpath—for example, https://example.com/app/ rather than only the domain root. Development servers can behave differently from production builds, including changing asset URLs during the build.
- Open Chrome DevTools and select Network.
- Reload the page while recording requests, then filter for JavaScript files (often shown as
JS). - Select the failed request. Record its complete URL, status, type, and initiator; inspect Headers and Response as well.
- Repeat with cache disabled in DevTools, or use the DevTools empty-cache hard reload. Compare the document and asset requests with the first run.
The initiator can help show whether the browser requested a script from the HTML parser or whether JavaScript triggered a later request, such as a lazy-loaded chunk. A failure may appear as an HTTP status such as 404, a CORS error, a blocked-origin indication, or another browser-reported failure. Read the actual request and response before changing a path. Work out how the browser resolved the URL
Compare the URL in the request with the reference that produced it. An HTML script URL is interpreted in the document’s URL and base context. Relative ES module specifiers are resolved using the document base URL, and an import map can remap a specifier. That means the text of an import alone does not always reveal the final network URL. Check the page’s base context and any import map alongside the request. MDN’s JavaScript modules guide describes module resolution and import maps.

For a lazy-loaded chunk, use the Network panel’s initiator information to trace the request back to the code or runtime that created it. The entry file may load successfully while its later chunk URL uses a different or incorrect prefix.
Check the build tool’s public path
The setting that controls emitted asset URLs depends on the build tool. Do not assume settings or defaults are interchangeable across Vite, webpack, and Vue CLI.

Vite: verify base and asset type
In Vite, imported assets and files in the public directory follow different rules. An imported asset can have one URL in development and a transformed, hashed URL in production. By contrast, files in public are copied to the output root and referenced with a root-absolute URL such as /icon.png. If the app is mounted below a subpath, verify that this root-absolute reference matches the deployment arrangement rather than assuming it will inherit the app prefix. See Vite static asset handling.
webpack: verify the prefix used for chunks
If the entry script works but a dynamic chunk fails, inspect output.publicPath and any runtime override. Confirm that an override executes before code that requests dependent assets; otherwise the entry and its chunks can use inconsistent URL prefixes. See webpack’s public path guidance.

Confirm the built file exists at the requested location
A correctly configured URL cannot retrieve a file that was omitted from the build or deployment. Compare the failed request’s full path with the build output, then confirm that deployment or CDN mapping preserves that path and prefix. For Vite, check whether the file is an imported asset emitted into the build output or a file copied from public; those have different output and reference behavior.
A 404 at a JavaScript-looking URL does not by itself identify the cause. The prefix may be wrong, the file may be missing, or the server or CDN may map the path incorrectly. Use the response and the deployed file layout to distinguish these cases.

Distinguish missing assets from SPA route failures
If the main HTML loads but opening or refreshing a client-side route such as /some/client/route returns a server 404, the problem may be the host’s routing configuration, not the JavaScript asset URL. A single-page application typically needs its host to serve the application entry document for client routes. Vercel’s support guidance explains that its routing is server-resolved unless SPA routing is configured; other hosts have their own rules. See Vercel’s SPA 404 guidance.

- JavaScript request fails: check the exact asset URL, build prefix, deployed file, and server or CDN mapping.
- Direct client-route navigation fails: check the host’s SPA fallback or rewrite configuration.
Use the failure pattern to narrow the cause
- Most assets have the same wrong prefix: compare the build’s base or public path with the app’s actual mount path.
- The entry script loads but a dynamic chunk fails: inspect the chunk request’s initiator and the build tool’s runtime URL behavior.
- Only some users see older paths or filenames: compare cache-disabled requests with normal requests; an older cached document may still reference assets from a previous build.
- The browser reports CORS or a blocked origin: inspect the reported failure and response headers rather than treating it as an ordinary missing-file problem.
- A client route fails while the entry document and assets load: investigate host-side route fallback separately from asset configuration.
