Why a Travel Router Won’t Connect to Hotel Wi-Fi—and How to Fix It

A travel router can connect to a hotel’s Wi-Fi without having internet access. The most common next step is to complete the hotel’s captive-portal login from a phone or laptop connected to the router. If that does not work, check the router’s VPN and firmware settings, possible device limits or MAC registration, and whether hotel staff must authorize the router. The exact controls depend on the router model and the hotel’s network policy.

First, identify where the connection is failing

Joining the hotel’s wireless network and getting internet access are separate steps. A router that has joined the hotel SSID but reports “connected but no internet” may still be waiting for a browser-based login, terms acceptance, or other authorization.

  • The router cannot join the hotel SSID: Check that you selected the correct network and supplied any required Wi-Fi password. This is an association or network-configuration problem, not necessarily a portal problem.
  • The router joined, but connected devices have no internet: Try the captive-portal steps below first. A device limit, MAC-based registration, or hotel restriction may also be involved.

These are troubleshooting possibilities, not a measure of how often each problem occurs. Hotel network behavior varies, and router controls are model-specific.

Fix a captive portal that does not appear

  1. Connect a phone or computer to the travel router’s Wi-Fi. Keep that device connected to the router while you sign in to the hotel network.
  2. Open the router’s administration interface and select repeater mode. Scan for the hotel SSID and join it. GL.iNet’s documentation gives 192.168.8.1 as the default administration address for its routers; other brands and models may use a different address or an app. Follow the documentation for your device. See GL.iNet’s repeater guide.
  3. Try to trigger the hotel login page. With your phone or computer still connected to the router, open a browser and visit an ordinary website. If the hotel portal appears, accept the terms or enter the credentials supplied by the property.
  4. If your GL.iNet router offers Login Mode for Public Hotspots, consider enabling it. GL.iNet says this mode is intended for hotspot login situations and may engage when the router joins a hotspot but has no internet access. Feature availability and menu labels depend on firmware; the v4 documentation describes Login Mode and Camouflage for firmware v4.6 and above. See GL.iNet’s captive-portal guide.
  5. If the portal still will not load, temporarily turn off the router’s VPN client while signing in. Once the login is complete, restore your usual VPN configuration if appropriate. VPN behavior and controls vary by model.

For some GL.iNet firmware v3 captive-portal cases, the vendor also documents changing DNS Rebinding Attack Protection. That is legacy, firmware-specific advice—not a universal setting or step to apply to every router. Use the instructions for your model and firmware: GL.iNet’s firmware v3 captive-portal guide.

Check whether the hotel limits or registers devices

Some properties limit how many devices can use a login or associate authorization with a device’s MAC address. Ask hotel staff whether a device limit or registration rule is preventing the router from getting online.

If the hotel permits it and your router supports it, MAC cloning may help when the network recognizes an already-authorized device. Use the Wi-Fi address that the phone actually uses for that hotel SSID. Phones may use private or randomized Wi-Fi addresses, which can differ from their factory address; GL.iNet notes that the address shown for a client may not be its physical address.

  • Do not connect the phone and router to the hotel network simultaneously using the same cloned MAC address.
  • Some GL.iNet repeater interfaces offer factory, clone, or random MAC modes and can save a selection per SSID; available options depend on the device and firmware. Refer to the repeater documentation.

Understand the privacy trade-off in public-hotspot Login Mode

Login Mode may make portal authentication easier, but GL.iNet warns that its mode suspends some services and switches DNS to automatic, which may expose network activity to the hotspot provider, such as a hotel or shopping mall. This warning applies to GL.iNet’s documented feature, not necessarily to similarly named features from other router brands. Review the vendor’s explanation before enabling it, and restore your preferred VPN or DNS configuration after login if appropriate.

When to ask the front desk

A hotel may require verification or authorization that cannot be completed through a local router setting. Ask staff whether travel routers are permitted, whether they can register or whitelist the router’s factory-assigned MAC address, or whether they can provide another login method. GL.iNet recommends asking hotel staff to whitelist the router’s factory MAC if its captive-portal methods fail. Hotel policy ultimately determines whether the router can be used.
