If a Steam game is missing content, crashes, or seems to have damaged files, run Steam’s built-in integrity check first. It checks the installed game files and repairs them when needed. A small number of files may still fail to verify because Steam leaves some local configuration files unchanged; that message alone does not mean the game is broken.
How do I verify game files on Steam?
- Restart your computer, then launch Steam.
- Open Library, right-click the game, and select Properties. You can also open the game’s Library page and select the gear icon, then Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish. Steam says the check can take several minutes.
Steam compares the installed files with what the game needs and downloads or repairs files it identifies as missing or damaged. Run the check for one game at a time, and avoid doing it while other intensive tasks—such as a virus scan or disk defragmentation—are running.

Why did some files fail to validate on Steam?
A message that one or more files failed to verify is not automatically a sign that the repair failed. Steam Support says this is normal for most games: local configuration files can differ from the expected files, and Steam does not replace them during verification. If the mismatch concerns those local configuration files and the game otherwise works, Steam says the message can be ignored. If the game still has the original problem, continue with the steps below.
What should I try if verification does not fix the problem?
Choose the next step based on what is failing. For an installation or update error, work through Steam’s client remedies before reinstalling the game.

If a download or update is stuck or failing
- Restart the computer and Steam. A restart can release file locks and clear temporary system states.
- Clear the download cache: in Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. This does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in to Steam again afterward. See Steam Support’s download-cache instructions.
- Repair the library folder: go to Steam > Settings > Storage, open the menu beside the relevant library, and select Repair Folder. Menu wording may vary with Steam client updates.
- Verify the game’s files using the steps above, then try the download or update again.
- Change the download region in Steam > Settings > Downloads and retry.
- Move the game to another drive, if one is available, to see whether the problem is specific to its current library or drive.
Steam lists drive, RAM, network behavior, and overclocking among possible factors in persistent installation or update problems. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your computer; seek local technical help for advanced hardware checks.
If the game reports a missing executable
Check your antivirus or other security software’s detection and quarantine history before repeatedly downloading the game. Steam says security software can quarantine an executable, sometimes as a false positive, but an alert should be taken seriously. Do not disable protection or allow an unknown file simply to make the game launch.
If you cannot determine whether the file is safe, contact the antivirus provider and report the issue to Steam. Only create an exception if you are confident the file is legitimate. Once a file is confirmed safe and has been removed, verify the game files to restore it. See Steam’s guidance for a missing executable.

What if the game still will not launch?
File verification cannot fix every launch problem. - Windows: check for operating-system and driver updates, and test whether non-essential background software is interfering.
- Linux: confirm that the game supports Linux. For a Windows game run through Steam Play/Proton, Steam points users to the game’s community discussions and the Proton issue tracker.
- macOS: follow Steam’s macOS-specific launch checks and confirm that the game supports your system.
If installation or update errors persist after the client steps, consult Steam’s installation and update troubleshooting. Reinstalling Steam is an option in some cases, but Steam warns that uninstalling the client deletes game content. Back up anything you need before considering that step.
