How to Verify Emergency Alerts and Avoid Sharing Misinformation During a Crisis

Take urgent protective action first, then confirm an alert with the responsible authority. Check a post’s original source and current location before sharing it.

If an emergency alert gives a plausible, urgent instruction, take the protective action first; verify details through the responsible authority as soon as it is safe. To check an alert, identify who issued it and which place it covers, then compare it with current information on the authority’s official website or other named channel. Before sharing a crisis claim, trace it to its original source and confirm that it is current. A familiar format—or a convincing screenshot—is not proof that a message is genuine.

What to check in an emergency alert

Read the entire message and look for the information that lets you understand what it says and where it applies. FEMA’s alert checklists recommend identifying the source, threat, affected location, protective action, and timing or update information. These details help you assess context, but they do not authenticate a screenshot, forwarded text, or message on their own.

  • Source: Which agency or authority issued it?
  • Threat: What has happened, or what hazard is expected?
  • Location: Which area is affected? Does that include where you are?
  • Action: What are people in that area being asked to do?
  • Timing: When does the instruction apply, and where will updates appear?

For Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) in the United States, local alerting authorities decide whether to issue a message and compose its content, according to FEMA’s WEA best practices. A plausible-looking format cannot establish that a message came from that authority.

How to confirm an alert without delaying action

  1. Act on an urgent, plausible instruction. If the alert tells you to evacuate, shelter, or take another immediate protective step, do not postpone it to investigate a post. Check details once you are safe.
  2. Find the responsible authority. Use the agency or incident authority named in the alert. When practical, navigate to its known official website or account directly rather than relying on a link in an unknown post or a forwarded image.
  3. Look for current, location-specific information. Check the authority’s latest alert, incident page, or other official channel. Confirm that the area and hazard match the message, and note when the information was updated.
  4. Follow the authority’s update channel. If details are incomplete or changing, treat them as unsettled and revisit the official source rather than treating an older post as current.

Where to check U.S. alerts

Weather warnings

For a U.S. weather warning, check the National Weather Service’s official warning information and follow its updates for the affected location. The NWS explains that it sends specified warnings to FEMA’s IPAWS infrastructure for delivery to commercial wireless carriers; NOAA Weather Radio is another official channel for weather and hazard information. These channels serve different roles, so use the one appropriate to the hazard and local availability, and follow the current instructions from the responsible authority. See the NWS pages on Wireless Emergency Alerts and warning dissemination.

A short WEA is not automatically suspicious. The NWS says that message length displayed can vary by device and network: its page describes up to 360 characters on devices using 4G LTE and later, compared with 90 characters on devices using 3G and earlier networks. That technical context does not verify a particular message; use the official follow-up channel and current authority information.

Other emergencies

For a fire, public-health emergency, infrastructure incident, or other non-weather threat, check the responsible local, state, tribal, territorial, or federal authority named by the alert, or the current official incident page it identifies. The U.S. alerting systems described here are not universal; outside the United States, use your country’s official warning authority.

How to check a crisis post before sharing it

A repost, screenshot, or paraphrase can lose its original source, date, location, or context. Before forwarding a claim, pause and check who made it, where its evidence came from, whether it is current and relevant to the affected place, and whether the responsible authority confirms it. WHO guidance similarly advises checking the author and source and looking for the latest official, evidence-based information; FEMA’s rumor-response guidance encourages sharing trusted information rather than unverified claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If an official authority confirms the claim, share its current information and keep the source and date attached.
  • If you cannot confirm it, do not repost it as fact. You can instead point people to the relevant official channel.
  • If an old post is being recirculated, check whether the authority has issued a newer update before sharing.

Rumors can make an emergency harder for people already affected. During its Hurricane Helene response, the American Red Cross wrote on October 6, 2024: “Sharing rumors without first vetting the source and verifying facts ultimately hurts people — people who have just lost their possessions, homes and, in some cases, loved ones.”

Use more than one way to receive official warnings

WEA can deliver alerts to compatible wireless devices through carriers, while NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts NWS warnings, watches, forecasts, and other hazard information continuously. NWS recommends using multiple warning channels; which ones make sense depends on the hazard, your location, and local availability. A radio can provide another way to receive official information, but it does not authenticate a screenshot or replace checking the responsible authority’s current instructions. See the NWS guidance on multiple warning channels.

For practical rumor-checking advice, see FEMA’s Hurricane Rumor Response and WHO’s guidance on disinformation and public health.
