How to Verify Breaking News Before You Share It

Before sharing breaking news, trace the original source, seek independent confirmation, and check photos or videos separately. If important details remain uncertain, wait or label them unconfirmed.

Pause, trace the report to its earliest available source, check for independent confirmation, and verify any image or video separately. If key details remain unconfirmed, wait to share—or say plainly that they are unverified.

A quick check before you share

  1. Pause. Breaking reports can be incomplete, and an alarming post can make immediate sharing feel urgent. Indiana DHS advises checking the source and supporting evidence; the Associated Press (AP) recommends slowing down when authenticity is uncertain. 2. Find the original. Identify who first reported the claim or captured the image or video. Check the account or author, publication date, location, and context rather than relying on a repost. AP’s verification guidance describes tracing user-generated material and, where possible, contacting the original filmer. AP: Verification at AP
  3. Look for independent confirmation. Compare reports from credible outlets that have verified the claim independently. Many posts repeating the same initial claim are not many confirmations. AP describes confirming facts with several independent, reliable sources; Reuters calls for cross-checking wherever possible. AP: Verification at AP · Reuters Journalistic Standards
  4. Separate the confirmed event from the explanation. Evidence that an incident occurred does not necessarily establish its cause, the number of casualties, who was involved, or who is responsible. Look for primary records, direct statements, or named sources, and note which details remain unresolved. AP’s guidance emphasizes corroborating facts with documents and on-the-record sources. AP: Verification at AP
  5. Check visuals on their own. A photo or clip may be genuine but old, from another place, or paired with a false caption. Use reverse-image search on a still or video key frame, then compare landmarks, signs, language, weather, shadows, and other context clues. Inspect a clip for edits or inconsistencies and trace its earliest available post. AP: Verification at AP
  6. Keep uncertainty visible. If the source is unclear, independent confirmation is missing, or the media cannot be authenticated, do not present the claim as fact. Wait for more information or label it unconfirmed. Reuters notes that fast-moving events can outpace the resolution of rumors, while its sourcing and verification standards still apply. How to check a photo or video

Search for earlier appearances

Run a reverse-image search on the image or a clear frame from the video. Look for an earlier upload, different caption, or different event. An earlier match can show that the media is being reused; it does not, by itself, prove who made it or settle every detail of the current report. AP describes reverse-image search as one element of a broader verification process. AP: Verification at AP

Compare the scene with the claim

Check visible details against the stated place and time: landmarks, road signs, language, weather, lighting, and shadows can reveal a mismatch. These clues can help test a caption, but they are not conclusive on their own. AP’s verification process includes geolocation and comparing contextual details. AP: Verification at AP

Trace the clip and its creator

Look for the earliest available post, inspect the clip for edits or inconsistencies, and seek the original creator when appropriate. A reverse search or a visual inspection is a useful lead, not a complete authentication of the event or its description. AP describes checking timing, location, authorship, and video frame by frame, and contacting original filmmakers. AP: Verification at AP

Treat AI checks as clues, not a verdict

AI-generated material can be difficult to assess from appearance alone. AP’s public standards say, “Any output from a generative AI tool should be treated as unvetted source material.” An AI detector or a visual oddity is not definitive proof that an image is fabricated—or authentic. Continue checking source, context, and corroboration. AP: Standards around generative AI

When reports conflict, compare the evidence

Do not decide by counting headlines or reposts. Compare what each report can substantiate:

  • Proximity to the source: Does the outlet cite a direct witness, document, official statement, or another report?
  • Independence: Did reporters verify the claim separately, or are they repeating the same initial post?
  • Specificity: Does the report distinguish what is established from what is still unknown?
  • Time and place: Are the date and location supported, especially when visuals are involved?
  • Media provenance: Has the image or clip been traced and checked against its caption?

AP describes corroboration across sources and checks of timing, location, metadata, and authorship; Reuters calls for cross-checking. Their guidance does not establish a universal numerical score for deciding whether a report is true. AP: Verification at AP · Reuters Journalistic Standards

What to do if you still cannot verify it

Wait rather than turning an unresolved report into a factual assertion. If you need to discuss it, make the uncertainty explicit—for example, “This claim has not been independently confirmed.” Revisit the story as credible reporting or primary evidence becomes available. Reuters recognizes that rumors may remain unresolved during rapidly developing events, without relaxing its verification standards. Reuters Journalistic Standards
