On an Amazon.com listing, read the Sold by and Ships from lines below Buy Now, then investigate the specific seller, offer, and product. “Ships from Amazon” describes fulfillment; it does not prove that Amazon is the seller or that the individual unit is genuine.
For products enrolled in Amazon Transparency, scan the code with the Amazon Shopping app or Transparency app. For every purchase, preserve the offer and order records so you can use the applicable return, support, or claim process if the item is wrong or materially different.

What seller verification can—and cannot—prove
Amazon displays several different kinds of information on one product detail page. Each answers a different question:
- Seller: the business associated with the offer you are buying.
- Fulfiller: the party that stores, packs, and ships that offer.
- Product page: the shared page describing a product, which may contain offers from several sellers.
- Reviews: opinions attached to the product page, not a guarantee about the unit supplied by one seller.
- Seller feedback: buyer feedback about a seller’s transactions, not a certification that the next item is authentic.
These distinctions matter because a third-party seller can use Amazon fulfillment. The offer can therefore show a third-party name under Sold by and Amazon under Ships from. Amazon’s policy prohibits non-authentic goods, but a policy prohibition and possible enforcement are not independent proof that a particular offer or unit is authentic.

There is also no supported universal feedback percentage, price discount, or visual checklist that turns a seller into a guaranteed safe purchase. Verification is a chain of checks. A warning signal should lead to closer examination, not an automatic accusation.
Step 1: Read “Sold by” and “Ships from” separately
Find the fields on the offer you will actually buy
On Amazon.com, look below the Buy Now button for Sold by and Ships from. These fields apply to the selected offer, not necessarily to every seller shown elsewhere on the page. If you change the seller, condition, size, color, or other variation, recheck both lines before placing the order.
Amazon’s buyer guidance explains that an offer fulfilled by Amazon can display the third-party seller under Sold by and Amazon under Ships from. In practical terms:

- Sold by a third party, Ships from Amazon: the third party owns the offer while Amazon handles fulfillment.
- Sold by a third party, Ships from that third party: the seller also handles fulfillment.
Do not read “Ships from Amazon” as “sold by Amazon,” and do not treat Amazon’s logistics role as a product-authentication certificate. The line tells you who fulfills the order; it does not identify the manufacturer of the item.
Check the offer, not only the product page
A single detail page may present multiple sellers, conditions, prices, and fulfillment arrangements. The featured offer can change, and the offer selected at checkout may differ from the one you first inspected. Open the offer list when available and compare the exact seller, condition, price, and fulfillment information for the option you intend to purchase.
Step 2: Open the seller’s information and read recent feedback
Use seller feedback for seller questions
Open the seller name attached to the offer and review the seller-specific information Amazon displays, including recent feedback where available. Look for comments about descriptions, condition, packaging, delivery, and how the seller handled problems. Recent comments are more useful for current operations than an undated impression based on a long history.

Why a single score is not enough
The available guidance does not establish a universal positive-feedback cutoff that makes a seller safe. A high score cannot guarantee the authenticity of your next item, while a small number of reviews may simply reflect a newer seller. Read the pattern and relevance of comments instead of applying an invented rule such as “anything above a particular percentage is safe.”
Step 3: Match the offer to the product you intend to receive
Compare the identity of the item
Before ordering, compare the offer and product detail page with the manufacturer’s description or documentation. Check:
- brand name and exact model or part number;
- size, color, capacity, region, and other selectable variants;
- new, used, renewed, open-box, or other stated condition;
- included accessories, manuals, warranties, and quantity;
- packaging claims, labels, and photographs that describe what is in the box.
A visible brand name or logo is one comparison point. It is not, by itself, a universal authentication method. Amazon describes a brand as a name representing a product or set of products, with products sharing a name, logo, or other identifying mark on the product or packaging. Use those marks to check whether the listing is describing the right product, not as proof that the mark cannot be counterfeit.
Investigate mismatches before paying
Watch for a model number that changes between the title, specifications, images, and seller description; a condition that does not match the price or photographs; missing accessories that are normally part of the package; or wording that combines several generations of a product. A confusing listing is a reason to pause and compare sources, not evidence by itself that the seller is fraudulent.

Step 4: Treat price as a prompt, not a counterfeit test
A materially low price can justify more investigation, especially when other details are inconsistent. It does not establish that an item is counterfeit, and there is no validated numeric discount threshold that buyers can apply to every category. Genuine clearance stock, regional pricing, used condition, discontinued models, and seller-specific promotions can all affect price.
When the price looks unusual, return to the exact offer and check the seller, condition, fulfillment, model, contents, and return options. If the explanation is not clear, choose an offer whose details and protections you understand rather than relying on the discount.
Step 5: Use Amazon Transparency when the product supports it
Scan the code
Amazon says customers can scan Amazon-issued Transparency codes with the Amazon Shopping app or the Transparency app for supported products. Follow this sequence:

- Confirm that the product or package carries a Transparency code and that the brand participates in the program.
- Open the Amazon Shopping app or Transparency app and use its scanning function.
- Review the result shown for that code before using the product.
- Keep the result with your order records if you need to contact Amazon or the brand.
Transparency is product- and program-specific. The absence of a code does not prove that an item is counterfeit, because not every brand or product is enrolled. Conversely, do not present a scan as a general test for unrelated products. If the app cannot recognize a code, check that you scanned the correct label and then contact Amazon or the brand through its current support route rather than guessing what the result means.
Use the brand’s own verification resources when available
For products without a supported Transparency check, consult the manufacturer’s customer support or authorized-retailer information if the brand offers it. Ask about the exact model, serial or lot information, packaging, and seller—not merely whether the brand exists. A brand can explain its current markings and distribution rules better than a generic visual checklist.
Step 6: Keep evidence of the exact transaction
Save the information that identifies the offer you selected:
- screenshots or a saved copy of the product and offer details;
- the seller name shown under Sold by;
- the fulfillment information under Ships from;
- the condition, variant, price, and promised contents;
- the order confirmation and delivery record;
- messages exchanged with the seller or Amazon support.
Listing content and offer availability can change after purchase. Your records show what you ordered and help support a return or claim if the delivered item is materially different.
Step 7: Inspect the delivered item without destroying evidence
Compare the shipment with the order
When the package arrives, compare the product, model, variant, condition, quantity, accessories, and packaging with the saved offer. Look for a mismatch between the listing and the physical item, not merely cosmetic differences that the listing already disclosed.
If something is wrong, photograph the outer package, shipping label, product labels, seals, serial or lot information, and contents before discarding packaging. Keep the item and its packaging in the condition required by the applicable return process. Do not alter labels or attempt repairs while you are documenting the problem.
Separate an authenticity concern from a normal defect
A damaged box, missing accessory, or defective component can be a fulfillment or quality issue without proving counterfeiting. An item with a different model, implausible markings, unauthorized substitutions, or materially different contents warrants a more serious report. Describe observable facts—what the listing promised and what arrived—rather than asserting a conclusion you cannot support.

What Amazon’s anti-counterfeiting policy means for buyers
Amazon’s US Anti-Counterfeiting Policy states: “The sale of non-authentic products is strictly prohibited.” The policy says sellers may be required to provide documentation, such as invoices showing authenticity or authorization, and describes possible actions including removal of suspect listings and seller-account enforcement.
Those are Amazon’s rules and possible enforcement measures. They do not independently establish that a particular offer is genuine. Your buyer decision should still rely on the exact seller, offer, product information, available verification, and recourse.

Start with the order’s current support and return route
Open the order and use the return or problem-reporting option that applies to the transaction. Select the reason that most accurately describes the issue, such as an item that is not as described, incorrect, damaged, or suspected to be inauthentic. Follow the instructions for the specific marketplace and order rather than using a generic process copied from another region.
Use an applicable A-to-z claim when eligible
Amazon describes purchase protection for eligible third-party transactions and provides claim reasons and procedural timeframes. Eligibility, deadlines, and required steps can depend on the marketplace and transaction. Check the current order help and claim terms, submit your documentation, and keep confirmation of every contact. An A-to-z route is potential recourse; it is not a reason to skip seller and offer checks before buying.
Contact the brand when its process is relevant
If the manufacturer offers an authenticity or authorized-retailer process, provide the model, serial or lot information, photographs, seller name, and order details. Do not send sensitive account credentials or move payment outside Amazon. Keeping communication and payment on Amazon preserves a clearer transaction record.
A practical decision framework before checkout
Use this short sequence for each offer:
- Identify: record the exact seller under Sold by and fulfiller under Ships from.
- Evaluate: open seller details and read relevant recent seller feedback.
- Match: verify brand, model, variant, condition, contents, and packaging claims.
- Question: investigate unusual pricing or confusing details without treating either as proof.
- Authenticate: scan a Transparency code when the product is enrolled; otherwise use the brand’s own support or retailer information where available.
- Protect: confirm the return or claim route and save the offer, order, and communications.
Stop and choose another offer when the seller identity is unclear, the condition or contents do not match, the listing cannot explain a major discrepancy, or the available recourse is not acceptable to you. No single signal is a substitute for that complete check.

Common mistakes that create false confidence
“Amazon ships it, so it must be authentic”
Amazon fulfillment identifies the shipping party. A third-party seller can use that service, so the fulfillment line does not prove who sold or manufactured the unit.
“The product has thousands of five-star reviews”
Product reviews describe experiences attached to the detail page. They do not isolate the inventory supplied by the seller you selected.
“The seller has a high feedback percentage”
Feedback is useful context, but no universal percentage guarantees authenticity. Read the relevant comments and examine the offer itself.
“The discount proves it is fake”
Price is a comparison trigger, not a validated counterfeit detector. Check the model, condition, seller, fulfillment, and protections before deciding.
“No Transparency code means counterfeit”
Transparency applies only to participating products. A product outside the program requires other checks, such as the manufacturer’s support or authorized-retailer information.
Geography and changing Amazon interfaces
The procedures and policy statements above are focused on Amazon.com and US-facing pages. Amazon’s listing labels, Transparency availability, return rules, and A-to-z terms can differ by marketplace and can change over time. If you buy through another Amazon country site, use that site’s current help, policy, and order pages for eligibility, deadlines, and claim instructions.
The interface may also present offers differently on mobile, desktop, and different product categories. Regardless of layout, identify the seller and fulfiller for the selected offer, then verify the product and preserve the transaction record.
