AI-generated quotations and citations can be convincing and still be wrong. To verify one, open the linked source, find the passage, confirm the exact wording and attribution, and check that the page supports the claim. Keep a visible link beside the claim so readers can inspect the same evidence. A citation makes a claim traceable; it does not prove the claim.
How to check an AI-generated quotation
- Open the source itself. Visit the cited page or document rather than relying on the model’s description or a citation-shaped string. OpenAI advises users to verify quotes and references by visiting sources directly: Does ChatGPT tell the truth?
- Find the quoted passage. Search the page for distinctive words. In a long document or PDF, use any page number or location supplied with the citation, then inspect the surrounding text.
- Compare the wording. Check whether the quote is exact. Look closely at omissions, ellipses, or edits that could change its meaning. If you cannot find the passage, do not present it as a verified direct quote.
- Confirm who said or published it. Make sure the source supports the attribution to the named person or organization. A page mentioning the subject does not establish that a particular person said those words.
- Check what the source proves. Ask whether the page supports the sentence attached to the citation, not merely whether it exists or discusses a related topic.
- Check authority and date. Prefer the original publisher for a quotation, and assess whether the source is recent enough for a fact that may change. Search citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect; OpenAI recommends opening them to review their support and recency: Searching the web with ChatGPT.
What makes a citation useful to readers?
A useful citation is a clickable anchor: a visible link attached to or placed beside the claim it supports. Link to the relevant page or passage, not a generic homepage, and use anchor text that helps readers understand what they will open. The Government of Canada’s guidance says citations should point to the correct page and remain close enough to the answer that their relationship is clear: Content guidance for AI help applications.

Judge a citation by five checks:
- Authority: Is this the original publisher or an appropriate authority for the claim?
- Specificity: Does the link reach the relevant page or passage?
- Support: Does the source substantiate the attached wording and attribution?
- Visibility: Can readers tell which claim the link supports?
- Recency: Is the source current enough for the type of fact being stated?
A link can help readers inspect evidence, but it cannot turn an unsupported sentence into a supported one. The source still has to say what the claim says it does.

Do not keep quotation marks around wording you cannot confirm. Find a reliable source that establishes the point, then paraphrase only what that source supports, with a nearby link. If no suitable source is available, omit the quotation or clearly state that it remains unverified.

When AI-generated material is going to be published
Review the surrounding claims as well as the quotes. Google Search Central says it is critical to manually fact-check and review AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publication: Google Search’s guidance on using generative AI content on your website. Do not infer that every AI quote is fabricated; the practical point is that errors can occur, so important wording, attribution, and supporting references need checking.

Some AI systems can attach citations to specific locations in source documents, but that support depends on source documents being supplied and the feature being enabled. Anthropic describes citations linked to locations within supplied documents: Citations. A precise location makes a passage easier to inspect; it does not remove the need to verify that the passage supports the claim.

For systems that generate citations from source material, clear source representation and a defined citation format help make references inspectable. OpenAI’s API guidance discusses citable units, stable source IDs, readable source material, and validation: Citation Formatting.
