You can make a better-informed decision about a website using only your browser: inspect the actual domain, reach the organization through a trusted route, and take browser warnings seriously. These checks can help you decide whether to proceed, but they cannot prove that a site is completely safe. HTTPS encrypts the connection; it does not verify who operates the site.
Start with the address bar, not the page design
Look at the hostname—the domain between the browser’s scheme (such as https://) and the next slash. A page can copy a company logo and layout, and a link can display reassuring text while pointing somewhere else. The address bar shows the destination you are actually visiting.

- Read the domain carefully for misspellings, added words, or an unexpected ending.
- Check that it matches the organization you intended to reach. A familiar brand name elsewhere in the address does not make a different domain official.
- Be especially cautious if an unexpected email, text, or ad takes you to a sign-in or payment page.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center warns that phishing campaigns use misspelled or otherwise misleading domains. Google also advises checking the URL because deceptive pages can look like genuine sites. FBI IC3 guidance; Google’s guidance on social engineering and deceptive sites.
HTTPS is useful, but it is not a legitimacy check
HTTPS encrypts data exchanged between your browser and the site. That protects the connection from some forms of interception, but it does not show that the site belongs to the company or agency you meant to visit. Fraudulent operators can use HTTPS too. The FBI’s advice is direct: “Do not trust a website just because it has a lock icon or ‘https’ in the browser address bar.” FBI IC3, June 10, 2019.

Reach the organization independently
If a message unexpectedly asks you to sign in, update payment details, or call support, do not use its link or phone number. Instead, use a route you already trust:
- Type an address you know is correct, or open a saved bookmark.
- Use the organization’s official app if you already have it.
- For a call, use a number on a bill, payment card, or other trusted document—not one in the suspicious message.
The FTC recommends contacting a company through a phone number or website you know is real, rather than the details in a suspicious email. FTC phishing guidance. Search can help you find an organization, but sponsored results can impersonate businesses and government agencies. The FTC advises checking unpaid results and comparing what you find with information you already trust. FTC guidance on online search results, April 2025.
Use browser warnings as a stop signal—not a safety certificate
If your browser warns that a site may be dangerous, stop. Do not click through just to test it. Close the page and confirm the organization through an independent route.

A browser showing no warning does not establish that a site is legitimate. Reputation systems look for known or detected threats; a new, changed, compromised, or not-yet-detected page may not trigger a warning. Google says Safe Browsing scans its web index daily and adds detected unsafe sites to its lists. Its FAQ describes sites appearing on those lists within minutes on average, appearing externally within half an hour on average, and cleaned sites typically being removed within 24 hours after a clean rescan. These are descriptions of Google’s service operations, not guarantees that any particular page has been checked or is safe. Google Safe Browsing FAQs.
Chrome’s Safe Browsing settings and privacy
Protection behavior depends on the browser and its settings. In Chrome, Safe Browsing protection modes differ in how checks work and what data is sent. Google says Enhanced Protection sends more information to Google than Standard Protection, including visited URLs and small samples of page content in real time. If that trade-off matters to you, review Chrome’s current Safe Browsing settings; do not assume every browser or mode works the same way. Pause when a page pressures you to act
Copied branding is easy to create, so consider what the page is asking you to do, not just how it looks. Unexpected demands for credentials or payment, urgent threats, a pop-up claiming software is out of date, a request to call “support,” or a download required to continue are reasons to stop and verify independently. Google notes that deceptive content can imitate trusted organizations and can appear on otherwise benign or compromised sites. Google Search Central guidance.

What each check can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it can help establish | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect the domain and confirm the request through a trusted contact route | Whether the visible address appears to match the intended organization and whether the request is plausible | A convincing domain or legitimate-looking page alone cannot prove the site is harmless. |
| Browser Safe Browsing warning or reputation signal | Whether the browser or service has detected or listed a known threat | No warning does not mean the page was exhaustively checked or is legitimate. |
| HTTPS or the lock icon | That the browser connection to the site is encrypted | It does not establish that the site operator is honest or that the site belongs to the intended organization. |
