Do not connect your wallet until you have confirmed the offer through an independently reached official channel and understood every action the wallet requests. A genuine-looking page can still be an impersonation. Treat any request for a recovery phrase, an unexplained transfer, or an allowance you cannot explain as a reason to stop. Connecting a wallet, signing a transaction, and granting permission for a site to spend USDC are different events; evaluate each prompt separately.
USDC promotions often use familiar language such as “giveaway,” “airdrop,” “bonus,” or “early access.” The wording, logo, and apparent social account do not authenticate an offer. Circle’s MiCA USDC White Paper specifically lists phishing, fake giveaways, identity theft, fake USDC tokens, and fake USDC airdrops among scam patterns. That warning does not prove that any particular promotion is fraudulent, but it means an unsolicited offer must earn your trust through independent verification rather than through its own link.

What you must establish before opening the promotion site
Find the announcement without using the promotion’s link
Start from a web address, bookmark, or account that you already know belongs to the named organization. Type the address yourself or use a previously verified bookmark. Then look for the promotion in that organization’s current announcements, help center, documentation, or authenticated social account. Do not treat the email, direct message, advertisement, QR code, or social post that introduced the offer as independent confirmation; those materials may all lead to the same impersonator.

The available Circle materials do not provide a universal registry of current USDC promotions. Therefore, failing to find an offer in one search is not proof that it is fake, and finding a post through a search engine is not proof that it is official. The relevant test is whether the named issuer currently publishes the same offer through a channel you reached independently.

Confirm the organization and account identity
Compare the domain character by character. Look for misspellings, added words, swapped letters, unusual subdomains, and misleading endings. A secure connection indicator in the browser only describes the connection to that address; it does not establish who operates the site. Check the account handle, profile history, and links from the organization’s known website rather than relying on a logo or copied wording.
Circle’s white paper identifies impersonation and identity theft as risks, but it does not establish a complete, permanent list of official domains or social accounts. That limitation matters: a page that resembles an official page still requires confirmation from a known channel, and an account that is absent from one list is not automatically fraudulent.
Match the offer’s terms
Record the exact eligibility rules, geographic restrictions, required network, end date, distribution date, and wallet action described in the independently reached announcement. Compare those details with the page asking you to connect. A difference in spelling, dates, token symbol, network, or instructions is a stop signal until the issuer explains it through an official channel.

The white paper warns about fake USDC tokens. If the offer identifies a token contract or network, use the issuer’s own documentation to verify those details; do not rely on a contract address copied from the promotion page.
Requests that should end the process immediately
A recovery phrase or private key
Never type a seed phrase, recovery phrase, private key, or wallet backup into a promotion page, support form, chat, or “verification” window. An independent USDC security guide states that no legitimate service, support agent, or website should ask for a seed phrase and describes unsolicited airdrop-claim sites as likely phishing. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to control the wallet; a wallet connection cannot make such a request legitimate.

An unexplained payment or transfer
Do not send USDC, another token, or a network fee to “unlock” a prize, prove ownership, increase a reward, or receive a larger return unless you have independently verified the transaction and understand why it is required. A prompt that names a recipient, amount, network, or fee you did not expect should be declined. Circle advises users to review transaction details and warns that funds sent incorrectly, or made inaccessible through user error, may not be recoverable.
Urgency that prevents checking
Countdown timers, claims that only a few wallets remain, threats that a reward will disappear, and requests to keep the offer secret are pressure tactics, not evidence of authenticity. Close the page and perform the independent check without the page open. A real deadline can still be verified through the organization’s known channel.
Know what your wallet is asking you to do
“Connect wallet” is not a synonym for “give the site permission to spend your funds.” A connection may allow an application to see a public wallet address and request additional actions. The wallet can then display separate prompts for a signature, a transaction, or a token allowance. Interface wording differs by wallet, network, and application, so read the exact text shown in your wallet rather than relying on a page’s description.
| Wallet event | What to inspect | Safe response when details are unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Connection request | Which site is requesting access and which public account or network it wants to use | Decline if the site is not the independently verified promotion or if the request is broader than your intended account |
| Message or signature request | The complete message, stated purpose, domain, and whether the wallet warns that it is human-readable or typed data | Do not sign text you cannot interpret or that does not match the verified action |
| Token approval or allowance | Asset, network, spender or destination, and the maximum amount the application may use | Reject an unexplained spender, asset, network, or spending cap |
| Transfer or contract transaction | Recipient, amount, network fee, contract destination, and any method or data your wallet displays | Cancel when any material field differs from the offer you verified |
Circle’s USDC Bridge documentation gives a concrete example of an allowance: an approval sets a spending cap for how much USDC Circle can access for the bridge transaction, and the operation requires a network fee. That describes the bridge’s process, not a guarantee about a promotion site. A promotion that asks for an approval must explain why that allowance is needed, which application will use it, and how much it can spend. If you cannot explain those points in your own words, do not confirm.
A step-by-step verification workflow
- Pause before connecting. Keep the promotion tab open only as a reference. Do not click its wallet button, sign a message, or enter any credentials while you investigate.
- Write down the issuer’s name. Identify the organization that supposedly funds or administers the offer. If the page never clearly identifies an issuer, treat that as a material gap.
- Navigate independently. Open a new tab and reach the organization through a known address, bookmark, or account. Do not copy the address from the promotion page or message.
- Search official materials. Look for the same campaign name, dates, eligibility rules, network, token, and required wallet action in the independently reached channel. Save the page address and publication date for your records.
- Compare the domains and accounts. Check every character in the web address and social handle. Follow links outward from the known official site, not inward from the promotion.
- Check the terms. Confirm region, wallet eligibility, end date, distribution method, and whether a connection, signature, approval, or transfer is actually required. A mismatch means stop and seek clarification through the official channel.
- Inspect the page before connecting. Make sure the page address still matches the one you verified. A redirect, pop-up, or new domain is a new trust decision; return to the official source and confirm it.
- Connect only if the connection itself is justified. Select the intended account and network. Remember that a connection reveals a public address and may enable later requests; it does not prove that later prompts are safe.
- Read every wallet prompt. For an approval, check the asset, network, spender, and allowance. For a transaction, check recipient, amount, fee, and destination. For a signature, read the full message or typed-data fields where the wallet displays them.
- Decline anything unexplained. Closing the site is safer than approving first and investigating later. If the site claims the reward is lost because you declined, return to the independently reached official channel rather than trying again.
How to evaluate an approval request
Identify the allowance
An approval authorizes an application or spender to use a specified token up to a specified cap. The cap may be limited or may be presented as an unusually large amount, depending on the wallet and application. Read the amount exactly as shown. Do not assume that a button labeled “claim,” “continue,” or “verify” is merely a harmless login step when the wallet identifies it as a token approval.

Check asset, network, and spender together
A familiar token symbol is not enough. Confirm that the asset is the one named in the verified offer, that the wallet is on the expected network, and that the spender or destination matches the independently verified application. A request for a different token, an unexpected network, or an address that appears nowhere in the official terms should be rejected.
Understand fees and sequence
Some legitimate blockchain operations require a network fee, as Circle documents for its USDC Bridge. A fee requirement alone neither proves nor disproves a promotion. Ask what transaction the fee pays for, whether the amount is displayed in the wallet, and why the sequence requires an approval before any stated reward. Never send an additional payment simply because a page says the first attempt failed.

If you only connected
Disconnect the site using your wallet’s account or connected-app controls, then stop visiting the page. A connection is different from signing an approval or transaction, but it is not a certification that the site is trustworthy. Do not follow a second link supplied by the same page to “finish verification.”
If you signed a message or approval
Record what the wallet displayed: the site, network, asset, spender, allowance, and time. Do not sign additional prompts to undo or complete the action until you understand them independently. Use the wallet’s own controls and the relevant network’s established tools to review permissions, and contact the named issuer only through an address you reached independently. The exact recovery options depend on what was signed and on the network; do not assume that disconnecting removes an allowance.
If you confirmed a transfer
Save the transaction identifier and all recipient details immediately. Stop further activity from the promotion page and avoid sending a second payment to recover the first. Circle cautions that an incorrect or inaccessible USDC transfer may not be recoverable, so a claim of guaranteed reversal should not be accepted without independent confirmation from the relevant issuer or service.

Use a comparison record for any specific offer
For a promotion you are considering, write the evidence in one place before interacting with your wallet. This prevents a page from changing its wording while you investigate and makes discrepancies visible.
| Verification item | What to record | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Independent announcement | Official page or account reached without the promotion link, plus publication date | No independently reached announcement means do not connect |
| Exact web address | Full domain and any redirect encountered | Any unexplained domain change requires confirmation |
| Account identity | Handle linked from the known official site | A copied logo or wording is not sufficient |
| Eligibility and deadline | Region, wallet criteria, end date, and distribution terms | Every field should match the page asking you to act |
| Wallet action | Connection, signature, approval, transfer, or fee | Proceed only when the action is stated and understood |
| Approval details | Asset, network, spender, allowance, and fee | Decline any unexplained value |
What Circle’s published warnings do—and do not—establish
Circle’s MiCA USDC White Paper says: “These scams include – but are not limited to – phishing on social networks or by email, fake giveaways, identity theft of Circle SAS or its executive members, creation of fake USDC tokens, offering fake USDC airdrops, among others.” The statement supports treating those patterns as known risks. It does not authenticate a particular website, social account, token contract, or current campaign.
Circle’s Bridge documentation explains the mechanics of an allowance and the need to review transaction details. Circle also describes its bridge as a service in which users connect their own wallet and interact directly with blockchain networks while retaining control of their wallet and asset use. Those descriptions apply to that bridge. They should not be generalized into a promise that every site using a wallet connection is safe or that every approval is harmless.
The security guidance available for USDC users says a recovery phrase should never be provided to a service or support account and recommends considering stronger self-custody practices for larger holdings. Hardware storage can reduce exposure of the phrase, but it cannot make an unexplained approval or transfer safe; the wallet still asks you to authorize the transaction.
When you should walk away
- The offer exists only in an unsolicited message or advertisement.
- The organization’s known website does not mention the campaign, or its terms do not match.
- The address contains a misspelling, extra word, or unexplained redirect.
- The page asks for a recovery phrase, private key, or backup file.
- The wallet prompt requests an approval, transfer, network, asset, spender, or fee you cannot explain.
- You are asked to pay to unlock a reward or to send more funds after an alleged failure.
- Urgency or a countdown prevents you from checking through an independent channel.
Bottom line
Verify the issuer independently, compare the exact domain and offer terms, and treat each wallet prompt as a separate security decision. A connection may expose a public address; an approval sets a token-spending allowance; a transaction moves assets. Never provide a recovery phrase, never approve an unexplained allowance, and never transfer funds to unlock a promotion. When the evidence or wallet prompt does not make sense, declining is the correct outcome.
