How to Verify a UPI Payment When the Recipient Says It Didn’t Arrive

If a UPI recipient says the payment did not arrive, verify the exact transaction in the sender’s app, check the receiving account record, and report an unresolved debit through the app or bank.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the exact transfer in the sender’s UPI app—not just a debit alert or screenshot. Open its transaction details, confirm the status, payee, amount, date and time, and transaction ID, then ask the recipient to check their bank account record. If the sender was debited but the receiving account has no credit, report that transaction through the app or the sending bank and keep the complaint reference.

Verify the exact transaction in the sender’s app

  1. Open the app used to make the payment. Go to transaction history and select the specific transfer. Menus vary by app and version; BHIM’s product guidance describes checking transaction history and status: NPCI BHIM information.
  2. Read the transaction status. A notification or account debit alone does not confirm that the beneficiary’s account received the money. NPCI describes checking the status shown on the BHIM screen and a bank SMS as confirmation signals: NPCI UPI FAQ.
  3. Match the payment details. Check the payee name or UPI ID, amount, date and time, and transaction ID against the intended payment. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance identifies these details for transaction and complaint screens: NPCI UPI Help guidelines.
  4. Ask the recipient to check their account record. A sender-side status and debit are not the same as confirmation that the intended account shows the credit. Compare the recipient’s account record with the transaction details before deciding what happened.

What each status means

Status or situation What to check What to do
Pending The sender may have been debited while beneficiary-bank processing is delayed. Check the recipient’s account record and report the pending, debited, not-credited transfer through the app if it remains unresolved. NPCI’s FAQ describes a 48-hour expectation after settlement at the beneficiary bank; that is FAQ guidance, not a replacement for the RBI reversal framework. NPCI UPI FAQ
Failed or declined, with a debit Check whether the debit has been refunded and whether the recipient’s account shows a credit. NPCI advises contacting the bank if a failed debit has not been refunded within an hour. For a UPI funds transfer debited without beneficiary credit, the RBI framework sets the applicable reversal rule described below. NPCI UPI FAQ RBI failed-transaction circular
Successful in the sender’s app, but recipient reports no credit Recheck payee details and transaction ID, then ask the recipient to check the receiving account record. If the records still conflict, report the exact transaction in the app or contact the sending bank. A success label in the sender’s app is the displayed sender-side status; check the receiving account record to establish whether the credit arrived. NPCI UPI FAQ
Merchant payment with missing confirmation Establish whether this was a payment to a merchant location rather than a transfer to a person’s account. The RBI circular treats a debit without confirmation reaching a merchant separately: its reversal limit is T+5 days, not the T+1 rule for a person-to-person account transfer. RBI failed-transaction circular

Know the reversal timeline for a person-to-person transfer

For a UPI funds transfer where the sender was debited but the beneficiary account could not be credited, the Reserve Bank of India’s 2019 framework requires automatic reversal by T+1 day. If reversal is delayed beyond T+1, the framework specifies compensation of ₹100 per day. These rules concern a transfer to a beneficiary account; do not apply the separate merchant-payment T+5-day rule to this case. See the RBI circular.

NPCI’s FAQ describes a pending debit/no-credit case and says the amount should reach the recipient within 48 hours after settlement at the beneficiary bank. Treat that as the FAQ’s guidance, not as a guarantee for every payment or a substitute for the RBI framework. If the payment remains unresolved, raise a complaint and track the transaction rather than relying on the FAQ timing alone: NPCI UPI FAQ.

Report the payment and keep a record

  1. Use the transaction’s complaint option. In the payment app, open the transfer and look for an issue, report, or UPI Help option. Labels and availability vary. NPCI says users can raise or check a UPI grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app: NPCI UPI FAQ.
  2. Give the exact transaction details. Include the payee name and UPI ID, transaction ID, amount, payer UPI ID if requested, and date and time. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance illustrates these fields and a complaint reason for a beneficiary account not credited on a pending or timeout transaction: NPCI UPI Help guidelines.
  3. Save the complaint reference. Keep it with the transaction record and check the complaint status in the app. The NPCI guidance depicts app-specific flows; not every app uses the same screens or labels.
  4. Contact the sending bank if app support does not resolve it. NPCI advises contacting the bank for an unconfirmed or unreversed debit. Its FAQ’s one-hour advice concerns a failed debit that has not been refunded; it is not a promise that every pending payment or dispute will be resolved within an hour: NPCI UPI FAQ.

If the complaint remains unresolved after the applicable grievance process, the RBI circular points to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. Check the RBI’s official site for the current escalation procedure.

Protect your UPI account while resolving it

Do not share your UPI PIN with anyone. NPCI states, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone,” and says bank customer support will never ask for it. Check payment status in the official app and contact support through the app or a trusted bank channel: NPCI UPI FAQ.
