To verify a research institute’s record, use databases to discover candidate publications and patents, then confirm each important claim against the underlying paper, patent document, official register, or dated institutional record. Search results alone do not prove authorship, affiliation, ownership, legal status, or a formal partnership.
Because no institute, country, or audit period is specified, the method below is designed to be reusable. Before searching, identify the institute’s legal and operating names, aliases, parent and child organizations, relevant researchers, jurisdiction, and period. State those boundaries in any report: a searchable database is not a complete census.

How to verify an institute’s publications and affiliations
- Start with the institute’s own publications list. Treat it as a lead list, not independent proof. Record each paper’s DOI or other stable identifier and the page’s publication or access date.
- Open the publisher or repository record. Check the title, authors, publication date, DOI, venue, and the affiliation text shown in the record or paper. Preserve the original byline and affiliation wording if attribution is disputed.
- Compare independent metadata. Cross-check the paper in Crossref and an open discovery index such as OpenAlex. OpenAlex says its institution data draw on Crossref, PubMed, MAG, and publisher websites; its affiliation matcher resolves raw affiliation strings to institutions. A match in an index is useful evidence to investigate, not a substitute for the source record.
- Disambiguate the organization. Check the institute’s legal-name variants, former names, campus or unit structure, and parent-child relationships. Use a persistent identifier such as a ROR ID rather than relying on a name alone. ORCID recommends organization identifiers such as ROR to disambiguate affiliations.
- Disambiguate the author. Compare the paper’s source byline with an ORCID record where available, and corroborate identity using subject area, coauthors, and affiliation history. OpenAlex retains raw author names and affiliation strings alongside resolved matches, but profiles may merge different people, split one person’s work, or preserve an old affiliation. Inspect individual works rather than treating a profile total as definitive.
- Trace discrepancies to their source. An error may originate in publisher metadata, an incomplete ROR record, or an index’s matching process; these require different corrections. OpenAlex’s correction guidance distinguishes those routes.
OpenAlex reported that affiliation matcher version 3.0, dated 28 September 2026, identified the correct institution for 89% of a random sample of affiliation strings, compared with 73% for its prior version. That is the index provider’s benchmark for its matcher, not an accuracy estimate for any particular institute or paper.

Build a search-name list
Search the institute’s current and former legal names, abbreviations, transliterations, subsidiaries, affiliated hospitals or centers, and technology-transfer entities. Search known researchers as inventors as well as organizations as applicants. A name match is only a candidate: manually confirm that the entity in the document is the institute or a related legal entity. An inventor’s affiliation or an institute press release alone does not establish patent ownership.

Search and record candidate documents
- Search WIPO PATENTSCOPE by applicant, inventor, and known application or publication number. Add relevant technology terms and language variants where useful.
- For each candidate, record the publication and application numbers, applicant as named in the document, inventors, dates, priority information, jurisdictions, and source record. Verify these details in the patent document itself.
- Follow the patent family and its national-phase members. PATENTSCOPE’s single-family-member view can hide other jurisdictional members from someone who reads the results as a complete filing count. Count one invention family separately from the country-specific filings within it.
- Check the relevant national patent register when the claim concerns a grant, lapse, assignment, enforceability, or current ownership. Record the jurisdiction and the date checked. Do not describe a published application as a granted or currently active patent.
PATENTSCOPE covers published international PCT applications and patent documents from participating national and regional offices, as well as non-patent literature; its coverage is not universal for every office or record type. Legal status is made up of events affecting an application or patent. Aggregated event data may not be current: the EPO notes that Espacenet’s event information depends on data received from national offices and can be delayed. How to verify a research collaboration
Match the evidence to the relationship being claimed. Different records support different conclusions:
- Coauthorship: A jointly authored paper, with source-level affiliations, supports collaboration on that work. By itself it does not establish an ongoing formal partnership.
- Grant or project participation: A dated award or project record can support participation by named organizations, for the period and under the funder stated in that record.
- Formal partnership: A signed agreement, joint-center announcement, or official institutional page can support a formal relationship, limited to the stated scope and dates.
- Metadata relationship: Crossref’s Research Nexus connects organizations, people, works, and activities in structured metadata. The completeness of a particular relationship depends on what participating sources deposited.
When comparing collaborators, use the same dimensions for each: relationship type, evidence source and date, named researchers and units, duration, jurisdiction, and whether the evidence is direct or inferred. Do not turn a coauthor network or an index relationship into a claim of institutional partnership without direct supporting evidence.

How to report the result without overstating it
- Define the institute, aliases, related legal entities, jurisdiction, and time period covered.
- Distinguish source-confirmed records from database matches and unresolved candidates.
- Separate publications from patent applications, patent families, national filings, grants, and in-force rights; these are different record types.
- For status claims, name the jurisdiction and date of the register check.
- Describe the evidence precisely: for example, “coauthored a paper with” rather than “has a formal partnership with” unless a formal relationship is documented.
- Explain the coverage of the indexes searched and avoid treating a missing result as proof that no record or collaboration exists.
