Before downloading or running a model, verify who controls its repository, inspect its files and history, prefer .safetensors weights, pin the exact revision you reviewed, and treat repository-provided code as software that can execute. Checksums and malware scans can add evidence, but neither proves that a repository is trustworthy.
1. Confirm the repository is the source you intended
Check the repository’s owner and account context: Hugging Face repositories belong to user or organization accounts, so a similar name or prominent search result is not enough to establish identity. Review the project description or model card, intended use, license, files, and supported architecture. Make sure they match the model you meant to obtain. Hugging Face’s FAQ explains repository ownership and the platform’s Git-based history.

2. Review the files and changes before loading
Inspect the file list and recent repository changes before you run a loader. Pay particular attention to unfamiliar scripts, custom modeling files, executables, installation steps, or instructions to disable safeguards. A visible history can help you understand what changed, but it does not certify that a change is benign.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
3. Prefer safetensors and prevent unsafe fallback
When the model and loading library support it, prefer weights in .safetensors format. The Safetensors project describes the format as designed to prevent arbitrary code execution associated with pickle-based formats. In Transformers, explicitly require the format with the supported option use_safetensors=True; that way, loading fails if suitable safetensors weights are unavailable instead of silently selecting another format. See the Safetensors security guidance and Transformers security policy.
Hugging Face’s Text Generation Inference security documentation warns that pickle-based PyTorch model files can execute unintended code during loading. A familiar extension or clean scanner result does not establish that a pickle file is safe. If a model you need is available only in a pickle-based format, do not load it casually: first understand the loader and use an appropriately isolated review or conversion process.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
A safer weight format addresses a loading risk; it does not establish the model’s provenance, behavior, or license suitability.

Download and load a reviewed commit hash or other immutable revision rather than relying on a branch that can move. The Safetensors project recommends pinning a specific repository revision “to protect yourself from upstream changes to the weights.” Transformers security guidance also recommends revision pinning. Record the repository identifier and revision in your notes, lockfile, or deployment inventory so the artifact can be identified and reproduced later. - Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

5. Treat remote code as an explicit trust decision
Some model architectures require code supplied by the repository. In Transformers, loading that code can require trust_remote_code=True. Do not enable it just to make loading proceed: inspect the modeling files, understand what they import and do, and pin the revision containing the code you reviewed. If you cannot review or trust that code, do not enable the option. Transformers security policy.
6. Check integrity and record provenance
If a trusted checksum is available, calculate the downloaded file’s checksum and compare it with the published value. When possible, obtain that reference from a source independent of the file transfer. A match shows that the file corresponds to the reference value; if that value came from an untrusted source, it does not establish that the publisher is trustworthy. Hugging Face’s FAQ discusses checksums as a way to confirm file identity.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
For organizational intake, the Cloud Security Alliance research note recommends provenance controls, checksums from a separate source, and recording the artifact’s version, source repository, and last validation date. A practical intake record can also capture the format, review date, and scan result.
7. Use scanners as one layer of review
Hugging Face documents malware, pickle, and secrets scanning, as well as third-party scanner integrations. Those results can help surface suspicious artifacts, but they do not replace checking the source, reviewing files and code, preferring safer weights, and pinning a revision. Scanner coverage and findings are only part of the evidence. See Hugging Face’s malware scanning documentation.

Compare the evidence before proceeding
| Check | What to establish | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Source identity | The expected publisher or project controls the account or organization. | A familiar name, popularity, or search placement alone does not prove identity. |
| Artifact format | Whether safetensors weights are available and supported by your loader. | Safetensors does not establish trustworthy provenance, suitable behavior, or an acceptable license. |
| Execution surface | Whether repository-specific code is needed and whether you reviewed it. | Pinning code does not make unreviewed code safe. |
| Reproducibility | A fixed revision and recorded checksum or provenance evidence. | A checksum can identify a bad artifact just as faithfully as a good one. |
| Evidence depth | Visible history, model documentation, license clarity, and scanner coverage. | No single signal guarantees that a repository is trustworthy. |
