How to Verify a Loan Rebrand Notice Before Sharing Personal Information

Before sharing information about a loan rebrand, contact your known lender or servicer through a recent statement or trusted account channel—not the notice itself.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you receive a notice saying your lender, loan owner, or servicer has rebranded, do not use the message’s links or phone number to verify it. Contact the lender or servicer through a number on a recent statement or an account channel you already trust. Ask what changed, whether the notice is genuine, and whether you need to do anything. Until you confirm the sender independently, do not share identity documents, account credentials, or bank details.

What does “rebrand” mean in a loan notice?

A notice may describe three different events: a company changing its name or branding, a loan being sold to a new owner, or the company servicing the loan changing. Those events are not interchangeable. For example, a mortgage can be sold while the same servicer continues collecting payments, and a sale by itself does not change the loan’s terms. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains these distinctions in its guidance on what happens when a mortgage is sold.

A familiar logo, a polished website, or a name that resembles your lender’s is not proof that a message is real. Ask the institution you already know whether its brand, ownership, servicing arrangement, account access, or payment instructions have changed.

How to verify the notice safely

  1. Pause. Do not reply, click a link, open an attachment, upload identity documents, or confirm bank details while the notice is unverified. An urgent deadline in an unexpected message does not prove it is legitimate. The CFPB advises people who receive suspicious bank or credit-union messages not to respond or click links; it says, “Never respond or click on links as they can take you to scammers’ malicious websites or give them access to your device.” The page was last reviewed April 15, 2024. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) gives similar advice for unexpected loan texts in its loan-text scam guidance.
  2. Find your trusted contact route independently. Use the phone number on a recent statement, the number on your lender’s official card or paperwork, or an established account channel you normally use. Do not use the callback number, link, QR code, or contact details supplied only in the notice. The CFPB specifically recommends getting a bank or credit union’s number from a different source than a suspicious email or text. For mortgages, it also notes that servicer contact details appear on the borrower’s statement and explains how to identify who owns a mortgage.
  3. Ask precise questions. Through that trusted route, ask whether the notice was sent by the institution, whether the name, owner, or servicer changed, the effective date, whether payment or login instructions changed, and what action—if any—you need to take. If the institution confirms new contact details, ask it to provide them through the verified channel.
  4. Compare the answer with the notice and your records. Check names, dates, addresses, payment instructions, and account details against what your known institution confirms. If the explanation conflicts with the notice, or the institution cannot verify it, do not act on the notice. Contact the known lender or servicer again through its established channel.
  5. Share only what the verified institution needs, through its verified channel. Do not send sensitive financial information to an unverified party. If the sender claims to be a debt collector, first confirm the company’s identity and the debt; CFPB guidance says a collector should provide its company identity and mailing address. Keep a copy of the notice and note the trusted contact route and the response you received.

What to check for each kind of change

Branding-only change

There is no universal notice format or deadline established for every branding-only change. Verify it with the lender or servicer through a channel you already trust. Ask whether anything changed beyond the name or logo, especially loan ownership, servicing, account access, or where payments go.

Mortgage servicing transfer

A servicing transfer means the company handling payments changes. Under CFPB mortgage-servicing guidance, the old servicer generally sends notice at least 15 days before the transfer, and the new servicer generally sends notice within 15 days after it, unless the notices are combined. The notice should identify key dates and the new servicer’s name and contact information. These timing details concern mortgage servicing transfers, not all loans or branding changes. See the CFPB’s guidance on what happens when a mortgage servicer changes, last reviewed April 3, 2024.

The CFPB also says that for 60 days after a mortgage servicing transfer, the new servicer cannot charge a late fee or treat a payment as late when the borrower sent it to the old servicer on time or within the applicable grace period. If a transfer notice is missing or a payment problem occurs, contact both the old and new servicers through independently verified contact details.

Mortgage ownership transfer

A mortgage may be sold without changing the company that services it. CFPB guidance says the new owner must notify the borrower within 30 days after the effective transfer date. The notice includes the transfer date and the new owner’s name, address, and phone number. A sale by itself does not change the loan agreement’s terms. These are mortgage ownership rules; do not assume the same timeline applies to other kinds of loans. See the CFPB’s guidance on mortgage sales and loan safety, last reviewed January 14, 2025.

Debt collector contact

A message about a loan may come from a company claiming to collect a debt rather than from the lender or servicer. Before disclosing personal financial information, verify the collector and the claimed debt. CFPB guidance recommends checking details with state regulators or your state attorney general and says a purported collector should identify its company and provide a mailing address. If you cannot verify the contact, reach out to the known lender or servicer independently. See the CFPB’s guidance on spotting debt-collection scams, last reviewed July 30, 2026.

Student loan servicing claim

For a message about student loans, CFPB guidance warns about requests for Federal Student Aid information, pressure to pay upfront fees, promises to reduce or eliminate loans, and claims of affiliation with the Department of Education or your current servicer. If you are unsure who contacted you, ask your current servicer through its trusted contact route. The CFPB’s relevant student-loan servicing and contact guidance is archived, so use it for these general warning signs rather than assuming it describes current payment programs.

What to do if the notice cannot be verified

Do not follow the notice’s instructions or send information while its claims remain unconfirmed. Contact the lender or servicer you already know, explain what the notice says, and ask it to check for a real change or possible impersonation. Report suspected scams to the relevant agency: the FTC advises recipients of unexpected loan texts not to respond or click links and provides a route to report fraud to the FTC. Keep the message and any related records in case your lender, servicer, or an agency asks to review them.
