How do I know if a livestream fundraiser is legit?
A familiar logo, a host’s endorsement, or a convincing story does not establish that a campaign is authorized. Treat the charity’s existence and the campaign’s connection to it as separate questions. Official charity and crowdfunding guidance offers useful checks, but no universal standard establishes that a livestream fundraiser has been vetted.

1. Record the recipient and purpose
Write down the exact charity or beneficiary name, the stated purpose, the organizer’s name, and the campaign page address. Note whether the stream says the money goes to an organization or to a person who says they will pass it along.

Search the official charity regulator or registry for the jurisdiction where the organization operates. Use the exact name and, where available, its registration identifier. In the United States, the FTC directs donors to the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search when checking tax-exempt status matters. In Canada, check the Canada Revenue Agency’s charities or qualified-donee lists. In the UK, the Fundraising Regulator advises checking the appropriate charity regulator for England and Wales, Northern Ireland, or Scotland; its safe-giving guidance explains the approach.

Registration rules and legal categories differ by country. Not finding an organization in one register does not, by itself, prove fraud: the cause may not be a registered charity, or a different legal category or registry may apply. Establish who will receive and control the funds before deciding.
3. Verify the organizer and campaign outside the stream
Find the charity’s website or phone number independently—ideally through its official register—and ask whether it knows about the fundraiser, authorized the organizer, and recognizes the payment destination. Do not rely only on contact details provided in the stream. If a friend shared the appeal, ask that person through a separate channel what they know.

The FTC’s crowdfunding guidance cautions that donating to an individual is not tax deductible merely because the person says they will forward the money to a charity. Ask who controls the funds and whether the charity has authorized the appeal.
How can I check where my donation goes?
Read the campaign and platform disclosures before entering payment details. The relevant question is not just what cause the stream names, but who legally receives the payment, what is deducted, and when the beneficiary gets any proceeds.

- Recipient: Is the legal recipient the charity or an individual or organizer first?
- Fees: Are platform or payment-processing fees deducted, and what amount or share is expected to reach the cause?
- Transfer: When and how are funds paid to the named charity or beneficiary?
- Tax treatment: Is the donation tax deductible under the rules where you file taxes? Do not assume that a payment to an individual qualifies.
- Refunds and failed purpose: How are refund requests handled, and what happens if the stated purpose cannot be carried out?
- Safeguards: How does the platform protect funds and respond to suspected fraud?
If these details are missing or unclear, do not assume the charity receives the full amount immediately. A platform may charge fees or route money through an organizer. The UK Fundraising Regulator’s online fundraising platform guidance, updated 4 November 2025, says key disclosures should be prominent before a donation. It also says that where funds are not paid straight to a charitable institution’s bank account, the platform must make clear before donation that the donor gives at their own risk. That is UK regulatory guidance, not a rule to apply worldwide.
Is it safer to donate through the charity’s website?
If you remain unsure about a campaign, navigate independently to the charity’s official website or contact it and ask how to give. This avoids relying on an unverified stream link and lets you confirm the intended recipient directly. The Fundraising Regulator says donors unsure about a campaign for a registered charity can contact the charity to confirm it or donate directly; see its guidance on online giving.

Direct giving is a safer route when the campaign’s authorization or payment flow is unclear, but still check that you have reached the genuine charity site and review its payment details. The Fundraising Regulator advises independently confirming a site address in its tips for giving safely to charity.

- Urgency or pressure: A demand to donate immediately is a reason to slow down and verify. The Canada Revenue Agency lists pressure to give right away among possible signs of donation fraud in its donation-scam guidance.
- Unusual or hard-to-reverse payment demands: The FTC says a charity that insists the only way to pay is cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, a payment app, or a gift card is likely a scam. This warning concerns an exclusive demand; it does not establish that every use of a payment app is fraudulent. Canadian guidance also warns against cash-like alternatives such as gift cards or money orders.
- An individual recipient without a clear explanation: Ask how the person is connected to the cause, whether the organization authorized the appeal, who controls the funds, and how local tax rules treat the payment.
- Missing payment disclosures: If you cannot tell who receives the money, what fees apply, or how payouts and refunds work, stop before paying.
- Copied images or inconsistent details: Search campaign photos with a reverse image search, then compare names, locations, dates, and the stated beneficiary. The FTC recommends this check. A match to another campaign is a warning to investigate, not proof of fraud by itself.
- Vague answers: If the organizer or platform cannot explain the recipient, authorization, or money flow, seek confirmation from the charity independently or choose another route.
What should I do if the fundraiser is only asking for crypto or gift cards?
Do not pay while the request remains unresolved. The FTC specifically flags a charity that says the only payment option is cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, a payment app, or a gift card as likely to be a scam; Canadian guidance warns against gift cards and money orders. A livestream’s urgency does not make an unusual payment request safer. Contact the named organization using independently located details, or donate through its official site if you can verify it.
