To verify a Bitcoin payment, get its full transaction ID (txid), look it up in a Bitcoin block explorer, and compare the transaction’s inputs, outputs, fee, and confirmation status with the payment details you were given. An explorer shows public blockchain data; it does not prove who owns an address or guarantee that a pending payment will confirm.
What you need before looking up the transaction
Ask the sender for the transaction ID, or copy it from the relevant wallet’s transaction history. Check that you have the complete identifier rather than a shortened version. A txid is the lookup key for the transaction; an address alone may show activity but does not identify one particular payment. How to check a Bitcoin transaction
- Open a Bitcoin explorer. Use an explorer that supports Bitcoin mainnet, such as Blockstream Explorer.
- Search the full txid. Paste it into the explorer’s search field and open the matching transaction page. Check the txid shown on the page against the one supplied by the sender.
- Compare the transaction details. Review the inputs and outputs against the payment record. A transaction can have multiple inputs and outputs, and one output may be change returned to the sender. Do not assume that every output is a separate payment to a recipient.
- Read the status. If the transaction is unconfirmed, it is pending in the mempool view. If it has been included in a block, the explorer shows a confirmation count. Its first block inclusion gives it one confirmation; each subsequent block adds another.
- Check fees if it is pending. The total fee and fee rate can help explain how it may fare in the current fee market. A lower fee rate relative to current demand can mean a longer wait, but an explorer cannot promise when a miner will include the transaction.
How to interpret the transaction details
Inputs and outputs show on-chain flow
Inputs identify the funds consumed by the transaction, while outputs show where the transaction directs funds. These details help you match a transaction to a payment record, but they do not establish the real-world identity of an address owner or prove that a recipient controls an address.

A pending transaction has not yet been included in a block. Once included, its confirmation count increases as later blocks are added. Confirmation depth is a useful status measure, not a guarantee that a payment is absolutely irreversible. Some services set their own confirmation policies; a shorthand such as six confirmations is not a universal rule for every large payment.

Fees help explain a wait, but do not predict an exact time
Fee rates and mempool demand affect the priority a transaction may receive. The fee details can help explain why a transaction is still pending, but miners decide what to include and when. Blockstream’s explanation of Bitcoin describes the role of miners and transaction fees.
What to do if the transaction is missing or still pending
If the explorer shows no matching transaction
- Check that the txid was copied in full and without an accidental character change.
- Ask the sender to confirm the transaction details from their wallet history.
- Do not infer from a missing lookup alone why the transaction is absent.
If the transaction remains unconfirmed
Contact the sender before attempting any change. If their wallet supports Replace-by-Fee (RBF), the sender may be able to create a replacement transaction with a higher fee. The explorer only displays public status; it cannot accelerate confirmation. Blockstream explains the limits of its explorer, including that miners confirm transactions by including them in a block.

Explorer lookup or your own Bitcoin node?
An explorer is a convenient way to view public transaction data. Searching with a third-party website means sharing the txid with that service, so consider whether you are comfortable doing that. A second explorer or a node you operate can provide another view, but the available documentation does not establish a privacy or reliability ranking among explorer providers.

What verification does—and does not—establish
- An explorer can show whether a transaction with a given txid is visible, whether it is pending or included in a block, and what its public inputs, outputs, and fees show.
- It cannot establish the legal identity of people behind addresses, prove recipient control of an address, make a pending transaction confirm, or guarantee settlement.
- For a large payment, use the txid and transaction details to check that the on-chain record matches what you were told, then apply any confirmation policy required by your own agreement or service.
