To check whether a game listing is official, find it by searching inside the storefront’s app or website, then compare its developer and publisher fields with the platform-linked creator pages and the company’s own website. Treat those checks as corroboration, not a safety guarantee: a verification badge or policy against impersonation does not prove that a particular game is safe or that every listing detail is accurate.
Start with the storefront itself
Open the platform’s app or type its official website address yourself, then search for the game by title. If you are unsure about a page, avoid reaching it through an ad or an unsolicited download link. This reduces reliance on an unfamiliar route, but it is not a universal anti-phishing test.

Once you find the game, check that you are looking at its store listing rather than a search result, discussion post, or third-party download page.

Read the developer and publisher fields separately
On Steam, the game’s store page prominently displays its developer and publisher. The names can be different: the developer makes the game, while a publisher may handle its release or distribution. Neither role should be confused with the storefront operator. Steam’s creator-page documentation explains the platform’s developer and publisher links.

- Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
- Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
- GameStop. Power to the Players.
- Redemption: Instore and Online
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Record both names and compare them with information reached independently from the organizations themselves. A familiar-sounding name by itself is not enough to establish that the listing belongs to the right company.
Use platform links as corroboration
On Steam, developer and publisher names can link to creator pages listing associated games. Steamworks documentation says page creators enter those names and can link them to creator homepages. Check whether the game appears alongside the organization’s other releases and whether its branding is consistent. A platform link provides useful context, but it does not prove that every detail on the listing is true. Steamworks: Creator Homepages

If the game is missing from a Steam creator page, that alone does not show that the listing is fake. The association depends on the creator-page setup and linking, so a genuine listing may not appear there. Compare the listing with the developer’s or publisher’s official website, reached independently, and contact the storefront through its support or reporting channel if the discrepancy remains.
Check public identity and contact details where available
Google Play listings can show a developer’s email address, phone number, and website. Google says developer names identify developer profiles and apps; for monetizing merchant accounts, the full address from the linked Google payments profile must be displayed. Which details appear depends on the account and applicable rules, so do not expect every listing to expose the same information. Google Play: Developer contact information

Use the available details to compare the listing with the organization’s independently reached website or other official presence. Treat a match as supporting evidence rather than proof: public contact information alone cannot establish that a game is safe.
Understand what verification does—and does not—mean
Google’s developer identity requirements vary by account type and applicable rules. Its help materials describe identity documents for some account setups and verified developer email; organization developers must verify a phone number displayed on Google Play. These checks concern developer identity and account requirements, not a blanket safety assessment of every app. Google Play developer verification information

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
Epic describes verification for products or services that use Epic Accounts as a check on whether developers or publishers are the brands they claim to be. Epic explicitly says that this is not an endorsement and does not verify a product’s trustworthiness or safety. Do not assume that this Epic process applies to other stores. Epic Games Support: Does Epic Games verify products or services that use Epic Accounts?
Use policy as context, not authentication
Google Play policy prohibits listings that mislead users about a relationship to another app or entity, including falsely claiming to be the official app of an established entity. That prohibition is useful context if a listing makes an unexpected affiliation claim, but a policy rule does not authenticate a particular listing. Google Play: Impersonation policy

A practical checklist for a suspicious listing
- Find the page directly: open the storefront’s app or type its official domain, then search for the game.
- Compare the roles: note the developer and publisher separately; do not mistake either for the store operator.
- Follow platform links: inspect any linked creator page and compare the game and branding with the organization’s catalog.
- Cross-check independently: visit the developer’s or publisher’s official website using a route you find separately, and compare the names and contact details that are public.
- Interpret signals narrowly: a verification label, matching contact detail, or platform policy is one piece of context, not proof of safety.
- Report unresolved discrepancies: use the storefront’s support or reporting channel rather than relying on a link sent by an unknown party.
These checks are grounded in the documented Steam, Google Play, and Epic examples above; they are not a complete, platform-by-platform verification standard. The available sources do not establish current Apple developer or seller display rules, so consult Apple’s own current documentation for Apple-specific questions.
