Before sending money to a crypto presale, independently confirm who is offering it, match the full contract address on the correct network, inspect what the contract’s administrators can do, and read the sale’s refund, claim, vesting, resale, and withdrawal terms. A matching address, verified source code, or audit is useful evidence—not proof that the offer is safe or that you will be able to get your money back.
1. Verify who is making the offer
Find the issuer or promoter’s identity, official domain, sale documents, stated use of proceeds, token rights, and contact or legal details. Reach the domain through more than one independently credible route rather than relying only on a presale page, social post, or unsolicited message. Check carefully for misspellings, cloned pages, and payment instructions that change.

Understand what the token is said to provide and what the issuer says it will do with the proceeds. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Initial Coin Offerings (July 25, 2017) recommends investigating a project’s business plan and token rights, and warns that an impressive-looking offer can still be fraudulent. Its guidance is ICO-era; the underlying due-diligence questions do not establish that any particular current presale is legitimate.
If a U.S. securities offering or securities-related intermediary may be involved, check the relevant firm or person in the appropriate regulator’s register. The SEC’s guidance on crypto assets, dated April 22, 2026 and updated or reviewed April 29, 2026, discusses U.S. federal securities-law treatment, which depends on the facts. Do not assume that every token offering is—or is not—a securities offering based on its marketing label.

2. Match the exact chain and contract address
A token name or ticker is not a unique identifier: different contracts can use the same name and symbol. Obtain the network and complete token and sale-contract addresses from project documentation that you have corroborated independently. Then open the appropriate block explorer yourself and compare every character of each address.
Review deployment details and transaction history, holders, and transfers. Check whether the addresses shown in the explorer match the ones in the project’s documentation. These are clues, not endorsements. Ethereum.org’s guidance on identifying scam tokens notes that malicious tokens can copy names or symbols and that apparent holder balances or transfer events can be deceptive.
A token appearing in a wallet, explorer, or token list does not by itself prove that it belongs to the project you intend to evaluate. If the network or address does not match, or the project cannot provide a clear explanation, stop rather than guessing.

3. Understand what code verification and an audit establish
Source verification is not a safety grade
When an explorer labels a contract’s source as verified, that generally means the published source and compiler output match the deployed bytecode. It does not prove that the code is correct, fair, or safe. Ethereum.org explains that comments and variable names can mislead and that verification may be partial rather than complete. Treat the label as a starting point for inspection, not a certification.
Check the audit’s scope
An audit is a review with a defined scope, not a guarantee. Find out which exact contract, version, and network the report covers; what issues it found; and whether the fixes were retested. A review of code does not, on its own, establish that operators are honest, funds are solvent, a market will have liquidity, or you can exit the investment.
Identify administrative powers
Where relevant, determine who can mint tokens, pause transfers, blacklist addresses, change fees or sale parameters, withdraw funds or tokens, or upgrade the contract’s implementation. This is a checklist of common control questions, not a claim that every contract has these features. If you cannot interpret the code or the project does not explain the controls, do not infer safety from an explorer badge; seek qualified independent help or pause.

Prefer actions that only read existing on-chain data. Ethereum.org distinguishes reads, which query contract data without changing chain state, from writes, which change state and require a signed transaction. Do not sign a transaction just to “check” a presale unless you understand exactly what it will do.

Find the answers in written offering terms, not only in a chat, social post, or site balance display. Terms vary by offering; another presale’s rules do not establish your rights.
- What are you buying? Record the token and quantity the payment is said to entitle you to, and the rights or utility represented.
- How and when is it delivered? Check the delivery or claim date, vesting and unlock schedule, lockups, minimum claim, and whether claiming requires a separate transaction.
- Can you get your money back? Identify whether cancellation or a refund is allowed, who is responsible for it, the conditions and deadline, and the process for requesting it.
- Can you transfer or resell the tokens? Check when transfers or resale are allowed and whether there are geographic, wallet, exchange, or whitelist restrictions.
- Where does payment go, and who controls it? Match the receiving contract or wallet to the project’s documentation and determine whether an administrator can withdraw funds or change relevant parameters.
- What payments and fees apply? Confirm the accepted network and currency, the fees, who receives them, and whether the terms actually specify any additional payment for a claim or withdrawal.
- Is there a real market for an exit? If the project claims liquidity, identify the named market or pool and examine the evidence and its limits. Thin or absent liquidity can make selling difficult; a liquidity claim is not proof of an honest issuer.
Keep a dated copy of the terms, contract addresses, transaction hashes, and relevant communications. A balance displayed on a site is not the same as an on-chain withdrawal. Nor does one small successful withdrawal establish that larger withdrawals will work: the SEC’s May 29, 2024 crypto-scam alert describes small withdrawals being used to build trust before later withdrawals are blocked.

5. Compare presales using the same evidence
If you are weighing more than one offer, record the same facts for each rather than letting a polished website or a single badge dominate your judgment. “Not stated” is more informative than filling a gap with an assumption.
| What to compare | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Issuer, independently corroborated domain, network, and full token and sale-contract addresses |
| Transparency | Published source, what the explorer’s verification covers, and the audit report’s firm, date, contracts, exclusions, and findings |
| Control | Owner and administrator roles, upgradeability, minting or transfer controls, fee-setting powers, and authority over funds |
| Sale terms | Token allocation and price terms, vesting, lockups, delivery or claim timing, and any round changes |
| Exit terms | Refund process, transfer and resale restrictions, withdrawal conditions, and stated fees |
| Market exit | Whether trading is actually available, the named venue or pool, and evidence and limitations concerning liquidity |
| Legal and geography | Issuer identity, stated eligible jurisdictions, applicable disclosures, and regulator checks where relevant |
This comparison is a way to organize due diligence, not a regulator-approved score or investment recommendation. If key facts are unavailable or contradictory, treat that as a reason to pause rather than a gap to fill with trust.

Guaranteed high returns, urgency, unsolicited pitches, fake testimonials, unexplained account gains, changing terms, or instructions to send funds to a personal wallet are reasons for heightened skepticism. The SEC identifies guaranteed returns, unsolicited offers, urgency, and misleading presentations as warning signs in its investor guidance.

Be especially cautious if a site says you must pay a new fee or tax before it will release an apparent withdrawal. The SEC’s May 29, 2024 alert describes this demand as part of a crypto investment scam pattern; it is not a universal withdrawal rule. Do not send more money just because a website labels the payment a release charge, tax, or verification fee. Preserve the evidence and contact relevant platforms, regulators, or law enforcement. Recovery is not assured.
No single positive signal—an audit badge, professional website, apparent transfers, social proof, or claimed liquidity—settles whether a presale is safe. The SEC’s 2024 alert also discusses presale pump-and-dump behavior, while Ethereum.org and the CFTC describe limitations of token indicators and liquidity. The sources do not establish a current, presale-specific fraud rate, so individual warnings should not be mistaken for a prevalence statistic.
