Before buying, ask the seller for a clear photo of the actual drive’s label and a live device-information readout showing its complete model string and firmware revision. Match both against the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model, including every suffix. A listing headline or a Windows Device Manager entry alone cannot verify the installed firmware.
What to ask the seller for
- A photo of the drive’s own label. It should show the complete model and part number. For an external drive, ask for the label on the device, not only its retail box.
- A live model and firmware readout from that drive. Ask for a screenshot or short video showing the device connected and selected. If the seller has multiple optical drives, the evidence should make clear which one is being read. For a drive inside an enclosure, ask for a readout that sees the optical mechanism.
- A disclosure about the unit’s history. Ask whether it is original, OEM or rebadged, refurbished, or firmware-modified. Do not infer any of those details from a similar model name.
Compare the label and readout with the listing. If the seller will not provide evidence, treat the model and firmware claims as unverified.

How to check the Blu-ray drive model and firmware
- Copy the full model string from the label and the live readout. Keep all suffixes and OEM designations; similar-looking names can refer to distinct variants.
- Find the manufacturer’s official support page for that exact model. Check that its device category, firmware downloads, and revision information correspond to the claimed model. Do not select an updater just because it names a near-match.
- If no official page exists for the exact seller model, contact the manufacturer or regard firmware support as unresolved. Do not substitute an almost-matching model’s updater.
- Record the official page and the date you checked it. Firmware listings can change, so recheck the page when making the purchase decision.
Pioneer’s official firmware page illustrates why the suffix matters: it lists variants separately and associates them with specific downloads and update information. For example, the page lists BDR-XS07UHD firmware 1.04 and BDR-XD07UHD / BDR-XD07TUHD firmware 1.06, both updated by Pioneer Corporation on November 21, 2024; it lists BDR-213ULBK / BDR-213EBK / BDR-213CBK firmware 1.05, updated September 20, 2023. Does Device Manager show the firmware version?
Not by itself. On Windows, Device Manager can help confirm that the operating system detects an optical drive and can show device status or errors. Microsoft’s guidance covers cases where a CD or DVD drive does not appear in File Explorer or has a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager; it is not a universal method for reading a Blu-ray drive’s firmware revision. A model-and-firmware readout must come from a utility or manufacturer-specific method that can read that particular drive. There is no established universal, manufacturer-approved utility that reports every computer Blu-ray drive consistently across internal drives, USB bridges, OEM rebadges, and enclosures. A utility’s displayed fields should not be treated as independent proof that a seller’s claims are correct.
Check the delivered drive before relying on the claim
- Photograph the drive label before installation and compare it with the seller’s photo and the listing.
- Connect the drive and capture a fresh model-and-firmware readout. Compare it with the pre-sale evidence.
- Check the exact model’s official manufacturer support page again and compare the revision shown by the readout with its model-specific information.
If the delivered unit differs from the evidence or listing, resolve that discrepancy with the seller before relying on any compatibility or firmware claim.

Do not confuse a computer drive with a standalone Blu-ray player
A “Blu-ray drive” may mean a computer’s internal or USB optical drive, or a standalone Blu-ray Disc player. Their firmware menus and update procedures are not interchangeable. Sony provides instructions for checking firmware on its Blu-ray Disc players, and Panasonic tells player owners to compare the installed version with update information for the exact player model. Those player-specific instructions do not establish how to identify firmware on a PC optical drive. Do not try an updater for a similar model to make a drive conform to a seller’s description. Firmware support and update behavior can be model- and version-specific. Pioneer warns on its official page that a BDR-XS07UHD updated to version 1.04 will not revert to older firmware versions. That warning applies to the stated model and version; it should not be generalized to other drives. Confirm the exact model and the manufacturer’s instructions before considering an update.

Compare more than the listing name
When choosing between candidates, compare the exact mechanism and suffix, internal SATA versus external USB form, the disc formats you need (including UHD Blu-ray if relevant), whether an official updater exists for that exact model, the unit’s OEM or modified status, and the seller’s willingness to prove identity and accept a return if it does not match. The cited manufacturer pages do not establish a universal compatibility matrix across drives or applications. ASUS provides an official Optical Disk Drive Firmware support path, but it does not establish a general firmware-reading procedure for all models.
