How to Verify a Bitcoin Transaction Before Accepting It as Payment

A broadcast or pending Bitcoin transaction is not settled. Verify the receiving output with a full node and apply a confirmation policy suited to the payment’s value and fraud risk.

Do not treat a Bitcoin payment as settled just because a sender says it was sent or a wallet shows it as pending. First check that the transaction pays the intended address and amount, then verify its confirmation status through a full node you control or trust. Decide in advance how many confirmations your business requires: zero confirmations carry meaningful risk, and even confirmed transactions are not absolutely irreversible.

What “verified” means for a Bitcoin payment

A Bitcoin transaction can be broadcast, seen in a node’s temporary mempool, or included in a block. These are different states. A transaction ID or wallet notification helps you locate a payment, but neither alone proves that the payment is valid, pays the right output, or has enough confirmations for your acceptance policy.

State What it establishes What it does not establish
Broadcast The transaction was sent to peers. It is not yet included in a block, so it has zero confirmations.
Seen in a mempool A particular node or service currently reports the unconfirmed transaction. There is no single authoritative shared mempool. Nodes maintain separate temporary mempools, and entries may be absent or later removed. See the Bitcoin P2P network guide.
One confirmation The transaction is included in a block. The latest block can be replaced, so a one-confirmation payment still has some double-spend risk. See Payment Processing.
More confirmations Later blocks extend the chain containing the transaction, making a competing history more demanding to establish. Risk declines; it does not become mathematically impossible. See Operating Modes.

Bitcoin’s developer guide puts the zero-confirmation caution plainly: “Zero confirmation transactions (unconfirmed transactions) should generally not be trusted without risk analysis.” That means an unconfirmed payment should be accepted only under an explicit policy that accounts for the transaction’s value and your exposure to fraud.

How to check a payment before handing over goods

  1. Get the transaction ID and payment details. Use the receiving wallet’s transaction details or ask the payer for the transaction ID. Locate the transaction and check that its outputs include the receiving address you intended to use and the expected amount. A displayed transaction ID or status by itself is not enough.
  2. Check with a fully validating node you control or trust. Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin Core validation overview describes three ways to use Bitcoin Core to validate received payments: its graphical wallet, as a trusted peer for a lightweight wallet, or through its CLI/API. A block explorer or wallet status display can be useful, but it is not equivalent to your own independent full validation.
  3. Read confirmation depth, not just “sent” or “pending.” Treat zero confirmations as unconfirmed. For a wallet transaction, Bitcoin Core’s gettransaction RPC reference documents a confirmations field. The same reference notes that if an unconfirmed transaction is absent from the node’s mempool, its status may be unknown. Do not use that one field as a substitute for checking the intended output and amount.
  4. Apply your acceptance threshold. If the transaction has fewer confirmations than your policy requires, wait before treating it as accepted. If you choose to accept an unconfirmed payment, make that a conscious risk decision rather than equating mempool presence with settlement.

How many confirmations should you require?

There is no universal confirmation count that guarantees safety for every purchase. Bitcoin’s payment-processing guide describes six confirmations as an arbitrary threshold and says high-value or fraud-sensitive payments may warrant at least that many. It is a risk guideline, not a mandatory rule for every sale or a promise of irreversibility.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
  • Low-value, low-exposure transactions: You may choose a shorter wait if the cost of a reversed or disputed payment is limited, but account for the remaining risk.
  • High-value or fraud-sensitive transactions: Use full-node validation and wait for the confirmation depth your organization has set. The guide’s six-confirmation discussion is a reference point, not a guarantee.
  • Zero-confirmation acceptance: Define when, if ever, staff may accept it and what loss the business is willing to bear. Do not let an individual cashier’s interpretation of a pending indicator become the policy.

Write the threshold into a procedure before a payment arrives. Include who is allowed to approve exceptions and whether goods or services may be released before the threshold is reached. Later blocks reduce the chance that the transaction’s history will be replaced, but no fixed count eliminates every possible adversarial scenario.

Why a full node gives stronger assurance than a wallet status

A full node checks transactions against Bitcoin’s validation rules. Bitcoin.org recommends recipients who want to validate incoming payments themselves use a personal full node such as Bitcoin Core: “If you think Bitcoin should remain decentralized, the best thing you can do is validate every payment you receive using your own personal full node such as Bitcoin Core.”

By contrast, Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) can use a Merkle proof to show that a transaction is included in a block. That proves inclusion in the block, but an SPV client does not independently validate every transaction in it. The Operating Modes guide explains this distinction, and Bitcoin.org’s validation overview describes the assurance provided by full validation.

Keep mempool and explorer checks in perspective

A public explorer or mempool website can help you find a transaction and see what that service currently reports. It does not establish that your own node validated the payment. Mempool information is local and temporary: transactions may not appear on every node, and unconfirmed entries can disappear when nodes restart or purge transactions, as described in the P2P network guide.

Use these displays as status aids, not as settled history or a substitute for checking the actual receiving output and applying your confirmation policy.
