Use browser-side validation to help visitors catch ordinary mistakes quickly, then validate the submission again on your server before processing it. Client-side checks alone are not enough: users can bypass them, so the server must enforce the rules that protect your application and data.
Why lead forms need validation in both places
Client-side validation gives people immediate feedback—for example, that a required field is blank or an email address does not match the input’s expected shape. Server-side validation is the enforcement point: a request can be submitted without using your page’s interface, or after its browser-side controls have been changed.

MDN describes ways HTML constraints can be bypassed, including sending a crafted HTTP request or modifying a form. OWASP therefore recommends validating on the server before application processing, alongside client-side checks for usability. See the MDN Constraint Validation API guide and the OWASP Input Validation Cheat Sheet.
Decide what each field is allowed to contain
Define acceptance rules per field rather than applying one restrictive format to everything. Validation should cover both syntax—the expected type or shape—and semantics—whether the value makes sense for the operation. For example, a lead form might require a contact method and allow only services the business actually offers; those business rules depend on the form.

Prefer rules that accept legitimate real-world input. Names and comments may contain Unicode characters and punctuation. Phone numbers often include separators, and postal codes are not numeric in every country. OWASP and W3C WAI caution against narrow assumptions about these fields; see the WAI forms validation tutorial.
For structured values, use a maintained validator or schema where appropriate. If a regular expression is genuinely needed, bound input length before matching and avoid patterns so restrictive that they reject valid users.

Build fast browser feedback with HTML first
Use semantic controls and native constraints for straightforward checks. Choose an appropriate input type, mark mandatory fields with required, and set relevant length or range limits. Browsers can enforce many basic constraints without custom JavaScript, while semantic controls also communicate the intended kind of input.
Use JavaScript when a rule cannot be expressed by a single field’s native constraints—for example, when two fields must agree. The Constraint Validation API provides setCustomValidity() for custom error text; pass an empty string to clear that custom error. Keep the corresponding rule on the server as well: browser logic is feedback, not the authority.

Enforce the same rules on the server
- Accept and parse the request safely. Apply request-size and nesting limits before parsing large or complex payloads.
- Validate every field. Check requiredness, accepted type and format, length or range, and any applicable business meaning.
- Validate relationships between fields. Apply cross-field rules on the server, even if the browser has already shown the same check.
- Stop on invalid input. Reject the submission clearly; do not continue processing partially validated data.
- Use separate security controls for separate risks. Validation does not replace parameterized database queries, context-aware output encoding, or authorization checks.
A syntactically valid email address does not prove that the mailbox exists or that the person submitting the form owns it. Validation establishes that input meets your application’s rules; it does not establish identity or make later handling safe by itself. OWASP discusses these distinctions in its input validation guidance.

When a server rejects a submission, identify the affected field and describe the problem in text. Where possible, tell the person how to correct it. Preserve safe submitted values so they do not have to re-enter information that was already valid.

For forms with multiple errors, an error summary that links to each affected control is one documented W3C approach. It helps people navigate directly from the summary to the field that needs attention. Do not communicate an error by color alone; include a textual description. The W3C’s G139 technique describes this summary-and-links pattern as an example for meeting WCAG, not as a standalone normative requirement.

Choose the right kind of check for the job
| Choice | Useful when | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Native HTML constraints | A rule is a simple required, type, length, or range check. | They provide browser feedback but can be bypassed; enforce the rule on the server too. |
| Custom browser logic | A rule involves multiple fields or needs tailored client-side feedback. | Mirror the acceptance rule on the server; client logic is not enforcement. |
| Inline field errors | A person needs to see what is wrong beside a particular control. | Use clear text and ensure the error is associated with the affected field. |
| Error summary with field links | A submission has several errors or users need a direct route through them. | W3C G139 documents this as one technique, not the only compliant design. |
| Strict field format | A value must meet a genuinely necessary, documented rule. | Check that the rule fits supported geographies and does not reject legitimate input. |
Practical release checks
- Submit an empty form and confirm required-field errors are clear.
- Try malformed and boundary-length values in the browser, then submit equivalent requests without relying on the page’s controls.
- Check valid names, phone numbers, and postal codes from the geographies your form supports.
- Confirm server rejection preserves safe values and makes each error easy to locate.
- Verify that invalid data does not proceed to downstream processing, and that database, output, and authorization protections remain in place.
