In Livewire 3, Laravel date rules can compare the end field with the start; for date-times, parse the submitted local value in the intended time zone and normalize the resulting instant for storage.
Start with the meaning and format of each field
Before writing rules, establish what the form submits and what the values represent. A booking day such as 2026-10-04 is usually a calendar date, not an instant that should shift when converted between time zones. An appointment such as 9:30 a.m. at a venue is a local wall-clock time that needs a governing time zone. An absolute instant, by contrast, identifies one point on the timeline.

- Date-only range: Compare the submitted dates as calendar values and retain them as dates if that is what the business meaning requires.
- Local appointment: Determine the applicable IANA time zone, such as the user’s selected zone or the event location’s zone, and interpret the local date-time in that zone.
- Absolute instant: Validate the intended instant and store it in a consistent reference zone, commonly UTC, converting to the display zone when needed.
Make the accepted input format agree across the HTML control, Laravel validation rule, and parser. A native date control commonly submits a date string, while a custom localized field may submit a different representation. Laravel’s Date rule reference documents date comparisons; confirm the exact behavior against the Laravel version installed in your application.
Choose inclusive or strict range ordering
Decide whether the end may equal the start. For a range that permits a same-day or zero-length interval, use an inclusive comparison such as after_or_equal:startDate on the end field. If the end must be later, use the strict after:startDate comparison. Laravel documents field-to-field and inclusive date comparisons in its date rule API.
#1 Best Overall
Apply the same decision to the actual precision of the fields. If users choose dates, equality means the same calendar date. If they choose times, equality means the same submitted time; decide separately whether a zero-length interval has any valid use in your product.
Put server-side rules in the Livewire component
Livewire validation uses Laravel’s validation facilities. Property-level #[Validate] attributes are convenient for ordinary rules and update feedback. Use a rules() method when rules need runtime logic or Laravel Rule objects; rules declared there are applied when validation is called. When a component’s fields and rules grow, a Livewire form object can group them together. See Livewire’s validation guide and forms guide.
For a simple date-only form, the rule shape can be expressed as follows. Adapt the accepted format to the field’s actual payload and the installed framework version:

protected function rules(): array
{
return [
'startDate' => ['required', 'date'],
'endDate' => ['required', 'date', 'after_or_equal:startDate'],
];
}
public function save(): void
{
$validated = $this->validate();
// Persist only the validated values.
}
Replace after_or_equal:startDate with after:startDate if equal endpoints are not allowed. If you use a format constraint, ensure it matches exactly what the UI submits rather than assuming that a browser’s display format is its submitted value.
Validate on update for feedback, and again on submit
Livewire’s update-validation options can show errors while a user edits, but a cross-field range may be temporarily invalid while one endpoint is blank or unfinished. Choose when to run that comparison so the interface does not report a misleading error mid-entry. Regardless of update behavior, call validate() in the submit action and use its returned validated data for persistence. This makes the final save depend on a complete server-side validation pass, not just what the browser displayed.
Interpret date-times in the intended time zone
A timezone-less value such as a local date-time string does not by itself identify an instant. For an appointment, obtain the governing zone from an explicit user choice or trusted application context, parse the submitted local value using that zone, and then normalize the resulting instant for storage. Convert it back to the intended display zone when rendering. Do not silently interpret a timezone-less local string as UTC unless that is the product’s stated rule.
Carbon supports parsing with an explicit format and timezone. Its instantiation guide documents format-aware construction and timezone arguments, and its Laravel guide recommends UTC as a reference for storing moments. Preserve enough time-zone context to reproduce the intended local display where that matters to the application. The correct zone source—user preference, event location, or a fixed business zone—is a domain decision, not something validation can infer.
Daylight-saving changes make local times especially important to test. Depending on the region and date, a local clock time can be skipped or can occur more than once when clocks change. Define how the application handles those cases rather than assuming every local date-time maps unambiguously to one instant.

Test invalid ranges and time-zone boundaries
Test validation at the component boundary, including the errors a user sees. Livewire’s testing guide documents assertions for validation errors. Include cases that match the chosen semantics:
- A missing start or end value.
- A malformed value or one in a representation the field does not accept.
- An end earlier than the start.
- Equal endpoints, verifying that they pass only when the range is inclusive.
- A complete submission that saves the validated values rather than raw component state.
- For supported time zones, local times near daylight-saving transitions, including skipped or repeated times where relevant.
These tests should reflect the product’s actual date/time meaning and supported zones. The Livewire, Laravel, and Carbon documentation describes the framework behavior; it does not prescribe a universal policy for ambiguous or nonexistent local times.
Check versions before copying an example
The Livewire guidance linked here is for version 3.x, while the Laravel API reference is for version 12.x. Verify rule syntax, component conventions, and validation behavior in the documentation matching your installed versions before applying the example unchanged.
