You can promote a 24/7 YouTube live stream in two different ways: let viewers discover a vertical version of the live broadcast while browsing Shorts, and publish short teasers or highlights that give people a reason to visit the channel. Neither route guarantees placement or viewers, and an ordinary Short should not be assumed to link directly to an always-on stream.
For a continuous stream, the most relevant discovery option is a vertical live version. For a particular segment, guest, or event, a promotional Short and YouTube’s scheduled-stream prompts can help make the moment easier to find.
Can people find a live stream while scrolling Shorts?
Yes. YouTube Help says viewers can find vertical live streams while browsing YouTube Shorts, including viewers who are not already subscribed to the channel. The stream needs a vertical viewing version for this discovery path; YouTube’s Live Control Room supports streaming horizontal and vertical versions concurrently. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance describes the feature, but it does not promise that a stream will be shown to every viewer or receive a particular amount of traffic.
In the Shorts experience on mobile, viewers see the vertical version. The horizontal and vertical versions share the same live chat, and you cannot add the vertical version after the broadcast has started. The vertical live feed is app-based and is not currently available on tablets.

Make the portrait view work
Before going live, check the vertical preview in Live Control Room. Choose an available layout—such as center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked—that keeps the important subject visible. Keep faces, on-screen text, and the action you want viewers to notice inside the portrait composition. A horizontal frame cropped without review may cut off the very detail that makes the stream worth watching.
Two ways to use Shorts for a 24/7 channel

Make a promotional Short that gives viewers a reason to watch
Build the clip around a specific reason to tune in: an interesting recurring segment, a striking visual, a useful process, a scheduled guest, or an upcoming event. Say plainly that the channel has an ongoing live stream and identify when the featured segment or event will happen. Treat the Short as a discovery and persuasion asset, not as a guaranteed conversion path.

Because viewers in vertical live cannot click links in the chat or channel description, make the call to action understandable inside the video. Use a concise spoken and on-screen instruction, such as naming the channel and telling viewers to visit it on YouTube. Set expectations about what they can do from the Shorts feed rather than relying on a clickable link there.
Promote a scheduled event and use notification prompts
For an event or notable scheduled moment—not every minute of an always-on stream—YouTube recommends sharing the stream URL at least 48 hours in advance and making a teaser or trailer. Viewers browsing Shorts can opt into notifications for scheduled streams that begin within the next 24 hours. These are separate opportunities: the advance link helps you promote the event ahead of time, while the Shorts-surface prompt is available near the scheduled start.

- Schedule the specific event or programming moment. Use a scheduled start time when the content has a clear beginning that viewers should plan around.
- Publish a teaser or trailer. Show the guest, segment, or other reason to watch and state the planned time clearly.
- Share the stream URL at least 48 hours before the event. YouTube gives this as promotion advice for a live stream; it is not a requirement for a channel that is continuously live.
- Use the next-24-hours window realistically. Eligible viewers browsing Shorts may opt into a notification for the scheduled stream. Do not treat this as an alert for every moment of a 24/7 broadcast.
Turn an eligible mobile live moment into a Short highlight
YouTube documents a highlight workflow for certain live streams made in the YouTube mobile app. It is not a general promise that an encoder-based or continuously running broadcast can be clipped into a Short this way.
Check eligibility before relying on the feature
- The live stream must be between 10 minutes and 12 hours long.
- It must be vertical and streamed in the YouTube mobile app.
- It cannot be a screencast.
- Chat must be enabled.
- The stream must not be marked Made for Kids and must meet YouTube’s safety standards.
Save and publish the highlight deliberately
When an eligible stream has a strong moment, use YouTube’s mobile-live highlight option to save it as a Short. The saved highlight defaults to private. Review it, then change its visibility to Public if it is ready for discovery. YouTube Help says setting a highlight’s visibility to Public “can increase the reach of your live content in the Shorts feed”; that is platform guidance, not a guaranteed result. Measure whether vertical-live discovery is working
Check YouTube Studio traffic sources for vertical live to see whether viewers are arriving from the vertical live feed. Use your channel’s own analytics to evaluate the result; there is no supported universal Shorts-to-live conversion rate to apply to every channel. Compare traffic around specific events or changes to the vertical composition, and avoid attributing changes to Shorts without checking the timing and other channel activity.
Copyright and content checks before promoting a 24/7 stream
Promotion does not change the rules that apply to the live broadcast or its clips. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the music, footage, and other material in both the stream and any Short you publish. Review YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and your account’s applicable content requirements before scheduling or publishing. Do not assume that making a highlight public makes its source material permissible.
