To keep a scheduled radio show live on YouTube, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with that event’s server URL and stream key, check the incoming preview, and start the encoder before airtime. YouTube recommends preparing two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. A scheduled watch page alone does not mean a usable programme feed is reaching viewers.
1. Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and choose Manage, then schedule a stream. Create a new event or reuse a previous setup. YouTube’s guidance is at Live streaming tips.
- If you reuse settings, check the title, description, privacy, scheduled time, stream configuration and stream key. Reusing settings copies metadata, settings and the key, so an old key or event configuration may not be the one you intend to use.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it unnecessarily; reset it if it is compromised.
- Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. They control whether the encoder can start or stop the stream automatically when enabled. Rehearse the selected behavior rather than assuming it will match the show schedule.
A scheduled event may appear as upcoming, allowing viewers to visit the watch page and opt into reminders. That is separate from the encoder sending programme audio and video.
2. Connect the encoder and verify the feed
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection; check YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the applicable server details and settings.
- Start the encoder feed. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check that the correct event is receiving the expected audio and video.
- When the programme is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room unless you have confirmed and rehearsed an enabled auto-start setup.
- Confirm that the stream is visible from the channel or watch page. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that an archive will be retained beyond that guidance or that a scheduled event alone creates a recording.
3. Build a repeatable pre-show routine
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours in advance and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not a promise of uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Before the day of the show, confirm the event, encoder profile, stream key, audio routing and video source.
- At least two hours before airtime, connect the encoder and check that it can reach the scheduled event.
- At least 15 minutes before airtime, start the feed and verify the preview, audio levels, picture and event page.
- During the show, monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and the actual viewer-facing stream. A preview does not prove that audio is clean or that viewers can hear the intended programme.
- If you use local archive files, check that they are being recorded and are usable. A cloud archive and a local recording are different safeguards.
4. Choose settings for the actual connection
There is no safe universal bitrate or resolution for every radio station. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned show, running a speed test and selecting a quality that the available internet connection can reliably sustain. Follow the encoder-specific and YouTube guidance for the actual production format rather than copying a setting chosen for another station. Monitor stream-health messages during the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance is available in its stream setup and troubleshooting instructions.

RTMP or RTMPS
Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it, as YouTube recommends encrypted transport. If an older encoder does not support RTMPS, check its compatibility and YouTube’s current instructions before the show; do not discover a protocol mismatch on air.
Audio matters for radio
Test the complete signal path with the show’s real type of content: speech, music, transitions and any processing used on air. Listen to the YouTube preview and a viewer-side playback device. This can reveal silence, clipping, an unintended microphone, incorrect routing or a mismatch between the station output and the encoder input.

5. Rehearse a backup, not just a backup plan
A second encoder can improve resilience, but only if the handoff works in the actual setup. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Test this before an audience depends on it, and verify what viewers see and hear. See YouTube’s failover guidance.
| Approach | Trade-off | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Single encoder | Simpler to configure and operate, but has no tested encoder backup. | Connection stability, stream health and a separate local recording if the station needs one. |
| Primary and backup encoders | More setup and operational complexity; failover is not assured merely because a backup exists. | Perform YouTube’s suggested failure test and confirm the viewer’s player switches to the backup feed. |
A UPS can keep a local workstation powered through a brief power interruption, but it cannot solve an internet outage, YouTube issue or encoder failure. Size it only after checking the connected equipment’s load and the runtime needed.

6. Confirm music and online distribution rights
Do not assume a station’s terrestrial broadcast permissions automatically cover a YouTube livestream or its archive. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to have necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights, and to meet regulatory requirements where the stream is distributed.
For an Indian station, check the rights for the actual sound recordings, compositions and lyrics, the relevant territories, whether the online stream is interactive or non-interactive, and whether an archive is made available. IPRS describes distinct categories including internet non-interactive, internet interactive, radio broadcast and community radio broadcast, and says its permissions cover only the works it controls. See IPRS.

PPL India describes its radio broadcast licence as covering its sound-recording repertoire on terrestrial FM and community radio stations, and directs radio applicants to contact it. That description alone does not establish that a terrestrial licence covers YouTube streaming. See PPL India.
An IPRS tariff document for non-interactive internet music streaming describes retransmission or simulcast of an FM station through a non-interactive internet service. The document states that its tariff comes into force on 1 April 2025 and includes minimum annual and revenue/per-stream calculations. Those are terms in that tariff document, not a quote or determination for an individual station. Confirm its current status, applicability, scope and any later changes with IPRS and the relevant rights holders before relying on it: IPRS non-interactive internet music streaming tariff.

7. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The event is scheduled, but no preview appears. | The encoder may not be sending a feed, or it may have the wrong server URL or stream key. | Compare the encoder’s URL and key with the intended event in Live Control Room; start the encoder and wait for preview before going live. |
| The wrong event receives the feed. | A reused setup may have copied an earlier event’s configuration or key. | Open the scheduled event and confirm its URL and key are the ones loaded in the encoder. |
| The preview appears, but viewers cannot hear the programme correctly. | Audio routing, levels or the source sent to the encoder may be wrong. | Listen to the preview and viewer-side playback; verify the full programme signal path before airtime. |
| Stream health degrades or the feed drops. | The connection may not sustain the selected quality, or the encoder/network may have failed. | Check YouTube’s health messages, run a speed test, select a quality the connection can sustain and follow the rehearsed recovery or failover procedure. |
| The backup encoder does not take over. | The failover setup may not be configured or may not work as expected. | Test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet as YouTube suggests, then confirm the player rolls over to the backup. |
| The encoder starts or stops at an unexpected time. | Auto-start or auto-stop may be enabled or disabled differently from the intended workflow. | Check the scheduled stream’s settings and rehearse the chosen manual or automatic procedure. |
