Before class, verify that the channel can go live, choose who can watch, rehearse the student viewing path, and decide what to do with the replay. YouTube Live is a delivery tool; whether it meets your school’s privacy, safeguarding, accessibility, and data-protection requirements is a separate question.
Check whether your channel can go live
YouTube’s current Help guidance says the person streaming must be at least 16, and the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before a lesson. Mobile live streaming also requires at least 50 subscribers. These thresholds are stated in YouTube Help pages checked on October 3, 2026; confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio because channel restrictions and feature availability can change. YouTube’s live-streaming overview and mobile live-streaming guidance explain the requirements.

- Check the channel’s live-streaming access in YouTube Studio.
- Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- If you plan to stream from a phone, confirm the channel meets the 50-subscriber requirement.
- Check the age and channel restrictions before involving students or scheduling a class.
Choose the streaming method for the lesson
| Lesson need | Method | What it supports | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teacher speaking to camera from a computer | Webcam | A computer and webcam provide a straightforward way to go live. | Less suited to a production with several video and audio sources. |
| Slides, software demonstrations, overlays, or external camera and audio | Encoder | Screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, and more involved production. | More setup and rehearsal; plan the encoder preflight in advance. |
| Quick phone-based update or mobile demonstration | YouTube mobile app | Mobile streaming, scheduled streams, and phone-screen casting. | Requires at least 50 subscribers and channel eligibility; activation can take up to 24 hours. |
For a simple teacher-to-camera lesson, a built-in webcam is enough to get started; YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary. Choose an encoder when the lesson depends on showing your screen or connecting external equipment, not simply because it appears more professional. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe screen sharing and external hardware.
Prepare and rehearse before class
Schedule and set access intentionally
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream, then choose its visibility: public, private, or unlisted. A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming content for subscribers. Decide who should be able to find or access the class, and test the viewing link from a student-like device and account before sharing it. Visibility settings are access controls, not a substitute for your institution’s rules for online teaching.

Rehearse the full student experience
Run a private rehearsal to check camera framing, voice level, screen sharing, and whether the intended audience can open the stream. Mobile Live Practice Mode offers a private rehearsal route, but YouTube says the feature is rolling out, so it may not be available to every channel. Check the preview in Studio and verify the actual watch-page experience rather than assuming the creator preview matches what students will see.
Check upload capacity and encoder timing
Upload capacity matters for sending the stream. YouTube recommends at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate; other people using a shared home or school connection can reduce what is available. For encoder sessions, YouTube’s checklist advises setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before class. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and test the stream on the channel/watch page and a mobile device. See YouTube’s streaming tips and live-streaming tips.

Keep equipment proportionate
Use an adequate built-in webcam if you have one. Consider an external microphone only if the built-in audio is not clear enough for students, or an external camera if the lesson needs a different view. These are optional categories, not prerequisites for going live.
Run the live lesson
- Tell students where to watch and how to participate. YouTube Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. If you embed the stream, give students a separate way to ask questions or direct them to the watch page when chat is needed. YouTube’s live-stream overview covers chat and replays.
- Set expectations for chat. Use chat as a question channel and arrange moderation appropriate to the class. YouTube Studio may offer controls such as polls and Live Q&A; check which controls are available in your account and interface before class. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance describes stream controls.
- Monitor the stream while teaching. Keep an eye on audio and video quality, and check that the stream remains accessible from a mobile device. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream during the broadcast.
- Protect private information. Check what is visible in your camera view, screen shares, and chat. Avoid exposing personal information or private student details, and give channel administration access only to trusted people.
End the stream and make a replay decision
After class, end the stream in the creator workflow and inspect the replay or archive YouTube created. You may be able to post highlights or a replay; mobile guidance says an archive is created and its privacy settings can be edited, or the archive can be deleted. Before sharing a recording, review whether it includes student voices, names, work, or faces, and confirm the intended audience can access it.

Privacy, safeguarding, and school policy
YouTube provides public, private, and unlisted visibility options, but those controls do not establish that a particular class setup meets local consent, student-data, safeguarding, accessibility, or recording requirements. Follow your institution’s rules before broadcasting students or student work. YouTube also says live chat may be disabled on streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult; this platform rule does not replace school supervision or safeguarding policy. See YouTube’s mobile live-stream guidance and live-streaming overview for platform rules.
