Use YouTube Clips to share a 5–60-second moment from a live stream’s source video, then give viewers a direct route to the live event or replay. A Clip is tied to the original video; a Studio highlight is a separately edited video asset. Because a Clip from a live stream may not be available until the stream ends and uploads, plan promotion around both the scheduled event and its archive.
Plan promotion before you go live
Share the event link early
Schedule or prepare the stream, then share its URL at least 48 hours before it starts where possible. YouTube also recommends connecting social accounts and embedding the event URL on a website. In your message, explain what the stream will cover and when it starts; this helps people decide whether to tune in, but does not guarantee more viewers.

Check livestream eligibility before building a campaign around a new channel: YouTube says a creator needs a verified channel, no livestream restriction in the past 90 days, and must be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Choose a moment worth sharing
Look for a concise, understandable moment that works without lengthy setup. Tell people what they will see and where to watch the full event. The clip is a preview, not a substitute for the scheduled stream link.

During the stream: mark moments and share carefully
Use stream markers to find highlights later
When a strong moment happens, add a stream marker in YouTube Studio if your workflow allows it. Markers make candidate moments easier to locate when you create a highlight. YouTube recommends creating highlight clips while the event is live, but do not assume that a viewer-style Clip will be playable immediately: live-stream Clips can wait until the stream has ended and uploaded.
When you share an available clip or highlight during the event, add context and a direct link to the live stream. Availability can depend on whether DVR is enabled and whether the segment falls within the DVR window.

Choose the right format: Clip, highlight, or Short
| Format | What viewers get | Timing and length | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Clip | A shareable segment that loops from the original video’s watch page; it is not a separate upload. | 5–60 seconds. A Clip from a live stream may not work until the broadcast ends and uploads; DVR limits can restrict availability. | Quickly sharing a moment while keeping the source video as the destination. |
| Studio highlight | A trimmed video created in YouTube Studio, with its own title, privacy choice, and description. | Can be created during or after a stream. The cited YouTube help page does not specify a fixed duration. | Making a more deliberately edited, separately publishable video from the event. |
| Short highlight from a mobile livestream | A Short highlight pulled from an eligible stream. | Eligibility requires a 10-minute-to-12-hour vertical stream made with the YouTube mobile app, chat enabled, not Made for Kids, and compliance with safety standards. It saves as private by default. | Seeking a Shorts-format preview when the stream meets every condition; change visibility to public if you want it publicly discoverable. |
YouTube’s Clips guide explains that Clips are 5–60 seconds and loop from the original video’s watch page. Its separate highlight instructions cover markers and Studio editing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not confuse a Clip with a new Short or upload
For an existing long-form video, YouTube Studio’s Video Clips & Shorts tool can create a new video clip or Short using transcript selection, timestamps, or AI suggestions where available. That is an upload or draft workflow, unlike a viewer Clip that loops from the source watch page. See YouTube’s Studio guide to Video Clips & Shorts.

Create and share a Clip from the stream archive
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube and open the eligible archived stream.
- Select More → Clip.
- Choose a title of up to 140 characters.
- Adjust the selection to a segment between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Select a sharing option: copy the link, share through a social platform or email, or use the embed option.
On mobile
- Open the video in the YouTube app and select Clip, if the option is available.
- Adjust the selection slider and title the segment.
- Choose a sharing option and send the Clip link with a route to the full stream or replay.
Viewers must be able to watch the original video to watch its Clip. Creators can review Clips made from their videos in the Clips library and YouTube Studio, including clip views and other performance details. The source-video dependency matters: a Clip can stop working if its source is deleted, made private, or removed for a Community Guidelines violation. You can turn off viewer clipping in YouTube Studio settings; check those controls if you want Clips to remain available as a promotion format.
After the stream: publish highlights and organize the replay
Create a Studio highlight
- Open the stream workflow in YouTube Studio and use the markers to locate promising moments.
- Create a highlight during or after the stream, then trim the segment.
- Choose its title, privacy, and description, and publish it when ready.
Keep the archive useful
Make the stream archive public if you want a broad audience to be able to find and watch it later. YouTube recommends organizing the archive and highlights in playlists. A public replay and a well-labeled highlight give viewers a clear next step after they encounter a Clip.

Troubleshoot Clips that do not work
- The Clip is unavailable while the stream is live: live-stream Clips may wait until the stream ends and uploads. Share the scheduled stream URL or an available Studio highlight in the meantime.
- The selected part will not play: check whether DVR is enabled and whether the moment falls within the available DVR window. Those limits can affect live-stream Clip playback.
- Viewers cannot open the Clip: confirm they can watch the original source video. A deleted or private source, or one removed for a Community Guidelines violation, can make its Clip unavailable.
- You cannot find the Clip option: confirm that the video and account allow clipping. Creators can disable viewer clipping in Studio settings, and not every live moment is immediately available as a Clip.
- A mobile livestream did not produce a Short highlight: check every eligibility condition: 10 minutes to 12 hours, vertical, streamed with the YouTube mobile app, chat enabled, not Made for Kids, and meeting safety standards. Also check visibility; saved Short highlights default to private.
- A Clip is getting little response: YouTube’s guidance does not promise a particular audience increase. Make the moment understandable, give it a clear title and context, and link directly to the event or replay.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your live-stream plan is to keep uploaded videos running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. It keeps the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
