While you’re broadcasting, use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to monitor stream health and real-time audience activity. After the stream ends, open YouTube Studio > Content > Live, select the stream, then choose Analytics > Engagement to find its video-level concurrent-viewer report, including peak audience information. Studio labels can vary as YouTube rolls out interface changes.
Check a live stream while it is running
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and go to the stream’s Live Control Room.
- Check the stream status for health information or errors.
- Use the real-time cards available for the way you started the stream. On computer, these can include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and estimated average view duration.
Use the live dashboard for monitoring, not as the final record of performance. YouTube says Analytics data is keyed to the video ID, processed, and despammed; it measures different information from Live Control Room. The processed Analytics report is therefore the better place for post-stream analysis, and its figures may not match live figures. YouTube’s Live Control Room guide explains the available monitoring metrics.

Find the report after the stream ends
- In YouTube Studio, select Content > Live. Depending on your Studio layout, the relevant menu labels may vary.
- Select the ended stream.
- Open Analytics, then choose Engagement.
- Review the video-level concurrent-viewer report. YouTube says it is generally available within minutes after the stream ends; the report can also include chat messages.
For channel-wide or broader content reporting, YouTube Analytics supports Live, On demand, and Live & on demand filters. Reports can cover watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Content and Live reporting also describes how viewers found live streams, along with peak and average concurrent viewers. See YouTube’s Analytics reports guide.
Understand what each metric tells you
| Metric | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Concurrent viewers | How many people are watching simultaneously. | Use it to understand audience size at a particular moment. |
| Peak concurrent viewers | The highest number of simultaneous viewers at one time. | Treat it as a high-water mark, not the typical audience; compare it with the average and watch time. |
| Average concurrent viewers | The average number of simultaneous viewers across the stream. | Read it alongside the peak to distinguish sustained audience from a short-lived high point. |
| Views, average view duration, and watch time | Viewing volume and time spent watching. | Consider them with retention and traffic sources to see how viewers arrived and how long they stayed. |
| Chat rate or chat messages | Chat activity: a rate while live or messages in the post-stream report. | These count messages, not unique people participating. |
There is no single “good” peak or average that applies to every channel. Stream length, format, traffic sources, and audience all affect interpretation; compare like with like rather than treating one number as a universal benchmark.

Compare streams without mixing unlike reports
Use the same reporting level and date range for each stream. Compare average and peak concurrent viewers, watch time and average view duration, retention, chat activity, and traffic sources. Keep duration and format in view: a longer event or a combined horizontal-and-vertical broadcast may not be directly comparable to a shorter, single-format stream. Do not compare a video-level metric for one stream with a channel-level metric for another.
For expanded reports, comparisons, and export, use Advanced Mode in YouTube Analytics. YouTube says a Studio update is rolling out gradually beginning July 2026, so not every creator will see the same interface at once. YouTube’s Advanced Mode guide covers the reporting tools.

Separate vertical-stream metrics from a dual-format broadcast
When you stream both horizontal and vertical formats, Live Control Room combines the metrics. To inspect the vertical stream separately, YouTube’s documented workflow is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Wait at least 24 hours after the stream ends.
- Open the ended stream in YouTube Studio and choose Analytics > Advanced Mode.
- Select Playback location as the breakdown.
- Set a reporting period longer than the first 24 hours.
- Choose Vertical live feed.
This separates the vertical feed in the report; the live dashboard’s combined figures are not a separate vertical-only view.

Use audience timing data to plan the next stream
In YouTube Studio, open the channel’s Audience tab and look for When your viewers are on YouTube. This report uses the last 28 days of channel audience activity and can help you choose a time for a future broadcast. It is channel-level context, not a substitute for an individual stream’s results. Audience and demographic information may be limited for some channels or reports. See YouTube’s Analytics reports guide.
