You can use an iPhone as a webcam for a Mac with Apple Continuity Camera, a linked Android phone as a webcam for Windows 11 or later, or a Pixel phone as a wired webcam on a device that supports USB Video Class (UVC). Choose the route that matches your phone and computer, mount the phone securely, and select it in your video app. A phone may deliver a better picture than your built-in webcam, but results depend on the camera, lighting, connection, and app.
Choose the setup that fits your phone and computer
| Phone and computer | Built-in route | Connection and key requirement |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and Mac | Apple Continuity Camera | Wireless or USB; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on, and both devices must use the same Apple Account. Apple Support |
| Android and Windows PC | Microsoft connected camera | Linked Android device; requires Windows 11 or later, Android 10 or later, and Link to Windows app version 1.24022.0 or later. Microsoft Support |
| Pixel and a UVC-compatible device | Pixel USB webcam mode | USB cable that supports data; the receiving device must support UVC. Google Pixel Camera Help |
These are documented platform-specific options, not interchangeable features: Microsoft’s instructions concern linked Android devices, while Google documents USB webcam mode for Pixel. The official setup guides do not establish a universal picture-quality or latency winner between wireless and USB.

Use an iPhone as a Mac webcam with Continuity Camera
Apple’s Continuity Camera lets an iPhone serve as a Mac webcam or microphone, wirelessly or over USB. The devices must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, be signed in to the same Apple Account, and be within 30 feet (10 meters) of one another. A VPN configuration that blocks local networking may interfere with Continuity features. Apple’s setup and requirements

- Place the iPhone in landscape orientation on a stable mount or stand, with its rear camera facing you.
- Open a camera-enabled app on the Mac and choose the iPhone in that app’s camera options. The exact menu varies by app.
- For a wired setup, connect the iPhone to the Mac. If prompted, trust the computer or allow the accessory. Apple recommends USB if you need to charge the iPhone while using it as a camera.
Many third-party apps that access the camera or microphone can use Continuity Camera, but support and controls vary by app. If the iPhone does not appear, check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple Account, distance, orientation, and whether another Continuity feature is in use; Apple also recommends trying USB.

Use an Android phone as a Windows 11 connected camera

If the phone does not request camera permission, check whether a camera window is open on the Windows taskbar and confirm that Link to Windows has camera permission on the phone. This documented route is for Android; it does not establish that Phone Link turns an iPhone into a Windows webcam.

Use a Pixel phone as a wired webcam
Google documents webcam mode for Pixel phones connected by a USB cable that supports data. The receiving device must support USB Video Class (UVC), a standard Google says is used by devices including laptops, TVs, cars, phones, and tablets. Google’s Pixel webcam instructions
- Connect the Pixel to the receiving device with a data-capable USB cable that fits both devices’ ports.
- On the Pixel, tap the USB charging notification.
- Select Webcam, then choose the Pixel as the camera in the receiving app if needed.
The Pixel charges normally in webcam mode. If a video call or another app needs the phone’s camera, the webcam stream pauses and resumes when that use ends. Google also notes that Pixel phones do not support UVC cameras as input.

Improve the picture with placement, light, and framing
- Use a stable mount: Keep the phone steady and position it near eye level. The right phone mount for webcam use depends on the phone and whether it will sit on a monitor, desk, or stand.
- Use the rear camera where practical: Apple specifically recommends pointing the iPhone’s rear camera toward you.
- Frame yourself before a call: Check the crop and camera angle in the video app, and make sure the mount does not obstruct a lens or controls.
- Choose a connection that suits the setup: Continuity Camera supports wireless and USB use; Pixel’s documented webcam route is wired. For Pixel, the cable must support data. Do not assume either connection type always produces lower latency or a better image.
A phone camera can be an upgrade, but it is not guaranteed to look better than every built-in webcam. The result depends on the specific phone, lighting, network or cable connection, and the app’s camera support.
What to check when the phone is not available as a camera
- Confirm platform and version: Check the requirements for the specific built-in route before changing settings.
- Check permissions: Windows may need camera permission for Link to Windows; the video app must also be able to access its camera.
- For Continuity Camera: Verify Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the shared Apple Account, proximity, stable placement, and that another Continuity feature is not in use. Try USB if wireless discovery fails.
- For Pixel USB mode: Confirm the cable supports data, the receiving device supports UVC, and you selected Webcam from the USB notification.
- Check the app’s camera menu: The operating system may recognize the phone while a particular app has not selected it. Camera selection labels and menus vary.
When to consider a third-party webcam app
A third-party tool may be worth considering if the built-in option does not fit your phone-computer combination or you need controls your video app does not provide. Verify compatibility with your operating system and target conferencing or streaming app, along with current features and pricing, through the tool maker’s official information before installing it.
