How to Use Windows Quick Assist to Help Someone Fix Their PC Remotely

Connect with someone you trust using Quick Assist: the recipient approves screen sharing and any separate request for full control.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To help someone remotely with Windows Quick Assist, you generate a six-digit code, share it with them, and wait for them to approve the connection and screen sharing. If you need to operate their PC, you must make a separate request for full control—and they must approve it. The person receiving help stays in charge of both decisions and can end the session.

Before you start: make sure the connection is trusted

Quick Assist lets one Windows user connect to another person’s PC to provide help. The helper can see the recipient’s screen; they can control the PC only if the recipient separately approves a full-control request. Use it with someone you trust, and never share a connection code with an unexpected caller or pop-up.

Microsoft’s tech-support-scam warning says: “Only allow a Helper to connect to your device if you initiated the interaction by contacting Microsoft Support directly.” That warning concerns interactions claiming to be Microsoft Support. For help from a friend or family member, start the session yourself and verify that the code is being shared with the person you intended. How to help someone with Quick Assist

  1. Open Quick Assist. On the helper’s Windows PC, open Start and search for Quick Assist. Microsoft also documents the shortcut Ctrl+Windows logo key+Q.
  2. Choose Help someone.
  3. Share the six-digit code. Give the code shown in Quick Assist to the person you’re helping. They need to enter it on their PC.
  4. Wait for the recipient to approve the connection and share their screen. The code alone does not connect you or give you control.
  5. Help using the available tools. Quick Assist includes a laser pointer, annotations, and chat. You can use these to guide someone without taking over their PC.
  6. Request full control only if needed. Choose Request control and wait for the recipient to approve. Do not assume that screen sharing gives you permission to operate the PC.
  7. Choose Leave when finished.

How to let someone help you with Quick Assist

  1. Open Quick Assist on your Windows PC. Search for the app from Start, or use Ctrl+Windows logo key+Q.
  2. Enter the helper’s code. Type their six-digit code in Code from assistant and submit it.
  3. Choose Allow when you’re ready to permit the connection and share your screen. Only proceed if you recognize and trust the helper.
  4. Decide separately about full control. If the helper requests control, approve only if you want them to operate your PC. You can choose Cancel control to stop allowing full control.
  5. Choose Leave to end the session.

Install Quick Assist if it is missing

Quick Assist is available from the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 and Windows 11. In the Store, search for Quick Assist and choose Get or Install. The app requires Microsoft Edge WebView2. Microsoft says WebView2 should already be installed on Windows 11 or when Microsoft Edge is installed; if it is missing, it may install automatically the first time Quick Assist opens. That installation can make the first launch take longer.

#1 Best Overall

On a work- or school-managed PC, organizational policy may block Store installation. Contact your organization’s IT support person or administrator if you cannot install the app.

If Quick Assist will not install or open

  • Give the first launch time. Quick Assist may need to install WebView2 when it opens for the first time.
  • If the Microsoft Store installation fails, Microsoft suggests resetting the Store cache with wsreset.exe, installing current Windows updates, and checking the PC’s time and location settings.
  • If the PC is managed by work or school, ask the organization’s IT support person or administrator whether Store installation is restricted.

For current installation guidance and any version-specific compatibility notes, check Microsoft’s Quick Assist support page. Its instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; individual screens and labels may vary.

Can you use Quick Assist from a browser or Mac?

Microsoft describes the Quick Assist web app and macOS version as options for interactions with Microsoft Support, not ordinary friend-to-friend help. For a friend or family member helping with a Windows PC, use the Windows Quick Assist app.
