To use the same WhatsApp account on two phones, link the second phone as a companion device. On that phone, choose Link as companion device to show a QR code; on your primary phone, open Linked devices, tap Link a device, and scan the code. This gives both phones access to one account without registering the same number as two separate primary accounts.
What you need before linking a second phone
- The primary phone that is already registered to your WhatsApp account. It is needed to link a new device.
- The second phone with the official WhatsApp app installed and updated. WhatsApp recommends using the latest app version for the QR setup.
- Access to unlock or authenticate on the primary phone if WhatsApp asks during linking.
WhatsApp supports companion phones as linked devices. You can link up to four devices to a primary phone, according to the WhatsApp Help Center’s linked-device overview.

Link WhatsApp on the second phone with a QR code
- On the second phone: install and open WhatsApp. At the setup screen, select Link as companion device. A QR code will appear.
- On the primary phone: open WhatsApp and go to Linked devices. The route into Settings differs slightly between Android and iPhone; follow the app’s Linked devices entry.
- Tap Link a device. Authenticate with biometrics or your phone’s unlock PIN if prompted.
- Use the primary phone to scan the QR code displayed on the second phone. Wait for linking and chat sync to finish.
WhatsApp provides the companion-phone steps in its QR setup instructions. The second phone is now a linked companion for the existing account, not a second primary registration.

What linked phones can and cannot do
A linked phone can use the account even when the primary phone is offline. WhatsApp says linked devices will log out if the primary phone is unused for over 14 days. A linked device also disconnects automatically after 30 days of inactivity.

Some features are not available on linked devices, according to WhatsApp’s linked-device overview:
- Viewing live location
- Creating or viewing broadcast lists
- Interacting with WhatsApp Flows
WhatsApp also notes a known issue: some linked devices may not show up to one year of chat history. Keeping WhatsApp updated is its recommended step.

QR linking on a phone versus code linking on Web or Windows

WhatsApp currently documents phone-number linking for WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Windows. For a second phone, use the QR-code companion setup instead.

Linked companion phone or a separate WhatsApp account?
Choose a companion phone if you want both phones to access the same account and identity. If you want a separate account, WhatsApp requires a separate phone number and registration from a primary mobile device. WhatsApp says one account cannot be verified with two different phone numbers; a companion device can be paired to a secondary account.

Check linked devices and remove one you do not recognize
- On the primary phone, open WhatsApp and go to Linked devices.
- Review the listed devices. If one is unfamiliar, select it and choose the option to log it out.
- Enable WhatsApp push notifications so you can review alerts about devices being linked.
Use only official WhatsApp apps and clients. WhatsApp warns that unofficial apps or websites are unsupported and may compromise your account or lead to a temporary or permanent ban.
