Yes—Waze has settings for camera alerts, including an on-screen alert and a voice alert while driving. Set them before you leave: open Waze > menu > Settings > Alerts and reports > Reports > Cameras, then choose an alert type and adjust Show on map and Alert while driving. Treat these as extra information, not a guarantee: Waze may not know about every camera, and a missing sound does not mean the road is clear.
What Waze’s speed-camera alerts can—and cannot—tell you
Waze can display reported camera locations on the map and, depending on your settings and circumstances, provide an on-screen and voice alert while you drive. The key limitation is that these alerts depend on information entered by Waze partners and map editors. Waze Help says, “If a camera wasn’t reported by an editor or partner, Waze may not know about it.” Waze’s camera-alert guidance therefore describes a reporting-based feature, not a complete camera directory.

There is another reason an audible warning may not occur: Waze says that when you are driving at or below the speed limit, you may see the camera marker on the map without hearing an alert. The lack of a sound is not evidence that no camera is present. Nor should a voice alert be treated as proof that every camera ahead has been identified.
Keep following posted signs and the road conditions whether Waze gives an alert or not. The app can add context to route guidance, but it cannot replace your attention or establish what enforcement equipment is present on every stretch of road.

Set up camera alerts before the trip
Make changes while parked, before starting your route. Waze’s documented menu path is the same on the phone for in-car use:
- Open Waze and open the menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Alerts and reports, then Reports.
- Tap Cameras.
- Select the camera alert type you want to configure.
- Set Show on map to control whether the camera alert appears on the map.
- Set Alert while driving to control the driving alert, which includes a voice alert and an on-screen alert.
The two controls serve different purposes: map display shows reported camera information visually, while Alert while driving enables the alert during a drive. Turning on both can provide both forms of notice, but neither setting makes the underlying camera data complete. See Waze Help’s camera-alert instructions for the current details.
If you use Android Auto or CarPlay
Disconnect the phone from Android Auto or CarPlay before changing these settings. Make the changes in Waze on the phone; they apply when you use Waze in the car. Do this before setting off rather than trying to reach or adjust the phone while moving.
What to check before you drive
- Confirm the camera alert types you want are configured.
- Check that both the map-display and driving-alert controls match your preference.
- If using Android Auto or CarPlay, finish setup while the phone is disconnected.
- Once moving, rely on the road, traffic, and posted signs—not on changing settings or waiting for a Waze warning.
Make the settings decision before you start
Think of the two camera controls as answering separate questions. Show on map answers whether reported camera information should be visible on the map. Alert while driving answers whether Waze should provide a driving alert, including a voice and on-screen alert. One does not establish that the other is enabled, so check both if you want both forms of notice. The settings affect how Waze presents reports; they do not change whether a camera has been reported or make the report complete.
If you are unsure which alert types you want, review the choices while parked rather than trying to decide during a trip. You can leave the app configured according to your preference, but keep the same expectation for every choice: an alert is a cue based on available information, not a promise that a camera will be announced. Do not use silence as a reason to change speed or disregard posted limits.
For an Android Auto or CarPlay setup, the important sequence is simple: disconnect first, adjust in Waze on the phone, then use Waze in the car. The settings apply in the car after you have made them on the phone. The instructions do not make reaching for the phone during a drive safe, so finish setup before departure and avoid troubleshooting while moving.
Understand the difference between a map marker and a warning
| Setting or behavior | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Show on map | Displays reported camera alerts on the map. | It does not show that every camera has been reported. |
| Alert while driving | Enables a voice alert and an on-screen alert while driving. | It does not guarantee that a warning will be audible for every camera; Waze says drivers at or below the speed limit may see the marker without hearing a sound. |
| No camera alert appears | No camera warning is being shown for that situation. | It does not prove that no camera is present. |
These distinctions matter when a passenger is checking the route or when you are reviewing a map before departure: a visible report and an audible alert are different things, and neither is a definitive account of every enforcement location.

Three common interpretations to avoid
- “I heard nothing, so there is no camera.” Not necessarily. Waze may not know about an unreported camera, and a driver at or below the speed limit may see the marker without hearing an alert.
- “I saw a marker, so Waze confirms every detail.” A marker reflects reported information. The camera feature depends on partner and map-editor reports; Waze does not describe the map as a complete directory.
- “The alert setting is on, so I can stop checking the road.” The setting controls whether Waze presents an alert. It does not take the place of signs, traffic conditions, or attention to the route.
These are different limits: one concerns what has been reported, another concerns whether the app produces a sound in a particular situation, and the third concerns how much a driver should rely on an app. Turning on alerts addresses only the presentation setting; it cannot resolve the other limits.
Use other Waze alerts as route context, not guarantees
Camera warnings are only one type of information in Waze. Crash-history and road-feature alerts can point to conditions worth anticipating, but they have their own reporting and availability limits. They should help you prepare for the road ahead, not persuade you to stop watching it.
Average-speed enforcement zones
In countries where average-speed enforcement zones exist, Waze says an approaching zone can generate voice and visual alerts. Waze currently does not calculate or show your average speed within that zone. As its help page puts it, “Currently, it doesn’t calculate or show your average speed.” The average-speed-zone alert guidance describes an alert about the zone, not a tool for verifying your speed across it.
That distinction is useful if you are used to a point camera marker: an average-speed alert concerns an enforcement zone rather than Waze calculating a trip-wide average for you. The feature is available in countries where these zones exist, so it should not be assumed to appear on every route. If you receive an alert, treat it as a reminder to observe the posted limits and conditions throughout the zone, not as a speed measurement or a substitute for your own attention.
Roads with a history of crashes
Crash-history warnings are dynamic. Waze may prioritize the most critical areas or omit alerts, and it says these notices do not distinguish between major and minor crashes. A missing warning is not proof that a road has no crash history: Waze Help states, “If an alert is not displayed, it does not necessarily mean a road does not have a history of crashes.” Read the feature’s limits in Waze’s crash-history alert guidance.
Use a displayed warning as context to be attentive, not as a ranking of exactly how serious a past crash was. The feature does not separate major from minor crashes, and it can be limited to the most critical areas. A quiet map therefore does not tell you that a route has no history of crashes; a warning does not tell you the severity of each crash. Drive according to current conditions rather than trying to infer a precise risk level from the presence or absence of the alert.
Road-feature alerts
Waze lists alerts for railroad crossings, traffic lights, toll booths, speed bumps, sharp curves, speed-limit changes, complex intersections, school zones, lane endings, and narrow bridges. This information relies on reports from partners and map editors, so it is useful context rather than a guarantee that every feature will be shown. The alert categories and their data basis are described in Waze’s road-feature alert guidance.

These alerts are different from camera alerts in what they describe: they can flag features of the road or route, such as a curve, lane ending, or narrow bridge, rather than a reported enforcement camera. They can help you anticipate a change, but the same practical rule applies. Continue to watch for the feature itself, follow signs and lane markings, and do not assume that an alert list includes every relevant road feature.

Waze says high-risk-area alerts are currently offered only in Israel and limited areas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It says these areas are avoided by default. This is a geographically limited feature, not a general warning system available on every route. See Waze’s guidance on avoiding high-risk areas.
The stated availability matters when interpreting a route: not seeing this type of alert elsewhere does not show that Waze has assessed every location and found it low-risk. The feature is limited to the places Waze identifies, and its default avoidance behavior should not be confused with a universal safety assessment of all routes.
How to treat police reports—and stale reports
Waze’s police reports can include categories such as police, mobile camera, hidden, and “other side,” with available options varying by country. These are user-contributed sightings, not confirmation of every enforcement location. Waze advises users to report only what they see in real time and close to the incident.
If a report is no longer accurate, users can mark it Not there. That helps distinguish a current sighting from a stale report, but it does not make the overall stream complete or continuously verified. Waze’s instructions are in Report police sightings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor safety, do not make a report or try to correct one while driving. If you want to contribute, do it only when safely stopped and when it is appropriate to do so. The useful driving decision is to respond to the road and conditions you can see, rather than to interact with the app.
Why timing and location matter for reports
A police-sighting report is most useful when it reflects what the person reporting actually sees in real time and is close to the incident. A report made late or far from the sighting can be less relevant to a driver approaching the area. Waze’s guidance to report only real-time sightings close to the incident is a practical limit on how the feature should be used: do not treat an older entry as a permanent marker or assume it remains current simply because it is still visible.

The Not there option offers a way to mark a report that is no longer present. That can help keep a stale report from being mistaken for a current sighting, but it does not verify every other report or guarantee that every obsolete one will be marked. The reporting system remains user-contributed information, with categories and options that may differ by country.
For the same reason, reporting should not become a task to perform while driving. A useful report is not worth taking attention from the road. If a report needs to be made or corrected, wait until safely stopped and only proceed when appropriate; do not reach for the phone, compose a report, or assess a report while the vehicle is moving.
A safe way to use Waze on the road
- Prepare while parked. Set camera and other alert preferences before connecting the phone to Android Auto or CarPlay or beginning the trip.
- Use alerts as supplementary cues. A camera, crash-history, or road-feature alert can add context; the absence of one cannot guarantee that the feature or hazard is absent.
- Follow posted signs and actual conditions. Let the route guide you, but make driving decisions based on the road and applicable signs.
- Do not troubleshoot or report while moving. If a setting needs attention, wait until the vehicle is safely stopped.
- Keep the limits in mind across regions. Some features, such as average-speed-zone and high-risk-area alerts, depend on local availability.
Waze’s help pages describe alert behavior and setup, but they do not establish jurisdiction-specific legal requirements or show that any accessory makes phone interaction while driving safe. Configure the app before departure and leave it alone while the vehicle is moving.
A practical decision rule
When Waze shows an alert, take it as a prompt to pay attention to the route feature or reported situation. When it does not show an alert, do not infer that the road is free of cameras, crash history, road features, or other conditions. In either case, the road and posted signs remain the information to act on. This rule works across the different alert types because each has a limit: camera and road-feature data depend on reports; crash-history notices may be prioritized or omitted; and some features are available only in certain places.
If you notice a setting issue after setting off, leave it alone until safely stopped. If a police report appears outdated, the app’s Not there option is intended to mark that it is no longer present, but there is no reason to interact with the report while moving. Safe use is not about having the maximum number of alerts; it is about configuring the ones you want before travel and not relying on them as a substitute for driving attentively.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Waze alerts are good for
Waze’s alerts are best understood as a layer of route context. Camera reports can add a map marker or alert, road-feature notices can call attention to a reported feature, and crash-history notices can identify an area Waze chooses to flag. Those functions answer different questions and should not be blended into one promise that the route is fully monitored.

An average-speed-zone notice can identify an approaching zone where the feature is offered, but Waze does not calculate or display your average speed. A crash-history alert may be absent even where the road has a history of crashes. A road-feature notice depends on partner and map-editor information. These distinctions are more useful than treating all alert types as equivalent warnings.

Configure the information you find useful while parked, use the app for route guidance and supplementary cues, and keep your decisions anchored in what you can see and in posted signs. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Waze have an audible alert for speed cameras?
Yes. Waze’s camera settings include Alert while driving, which controls a voice alert and an on-screen alert. Set it in Waze > menu > Settings > Alerts and reports > Reports > Cameras before the trip. Waze may not know about every camera, and it says drivers at or below the speed limit may see a camera marker without hearing a sound.
Why did Waze show a camera on the map but not make a sound?
Waze says drivers at or under the speed limit may see the camera alert on the map without hearing an alert. Check that Alert while driving is configured, but do not assume a missing sound means the camera is absent.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Waze show every speed camera?
No. Waze says camera information comes from partners and map editors, and it may not know about a camera that was not reported. Treat camera markers and alerts as reported information, not a complete directory.
Can I change camera-alert settings through Android Auto or CarPlay?
Waze’s instructions say to disconnect the phone from Android Auto or CarPlay before changing settings. Make the changes in Waze on the phone; they apply when you use Waze in the car. Set them before you start driving.
Does Waze calculate my average speed in an enforcement zone?
No. In countries where average-speed enforcement zones exist, Waze says an approaching zone can trigger voice and visual alerts, but it currently does not calculate or show your average speed.
If there is no crash-history alert, does that mean the road has no crash history?
No. Waze says crash-history alerts may be limited to the most critical areas, and a missing alert does not necessarily mean a road has no crash history. The alerts also do not distinguish major and minor crashes.
Can I report or correct a police sighting while driving?
Do not interact with Waze while the vehicle is moving. Waze advises reporting only real-time sightings close to the incident and provides a Not there option for stale reports. If you want to report or correct one, wait until safely stopped and it is appropriate to do so.
Are high-risk-area alerts available everywhere?
No. Waze says they are currently offered only in Israel and limited areas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and those areas are avoided by default. Do not interpret the absence of this feature elsewhere as a general safety assessment.
The Bottom Line
Waze can provide camera, crash-history, and road-feature alerts, but none is a guarantee that every camera or hazard will be identified. Configure the alerts you want before departure—especially if you use Android Auto or CarPlay—then follow posted signs and actual road conditions. A missing alert or sound is never proof that the road is clear.
