A 2026 review of 23 studies involving 1,036 participants found a large pooled effect on divergent thinking, or generating multiple possibilities, but no statistically significant effect on convergent thinking, or narrowing toward one answer. Try a comfortable, safe walk during brainstorming, then capture your ideas and return to focused work to evaluate them.
What walking can—and cannot—do for creative thinking
Creativity includes different kinds of thinking. Divergent thinking means producing several possible ideas, uses, themes, or approaches. Convergent thinking means comparing possibilities and working toward one answer. Walking appears more useful for the first task than the second.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Thabane and colleagues combined 23 studies with 1,036 participants. For divergent thinking, the pooled effect was large: d = 0.93 (95% CI 0.44–1.42), with moderate-certainty evidence. In a sensitivity analysis restricted to randomized studies, the effect remained large: d = 0.82 (95% CI 0.35–1.28). These are group-level standardized effects, not a prediction that any one person will see a particular improvement. Thabane et al., PLOS ONE, 2026.
For convergent thinking, the same review found d = 0.16 (95% CI −0.31–0.63), an estimate that was not statistically significant and was supported by very uncertain evidence. That is not evidence that a walk reliably helps you solve a precise problem or select the strongest idea.

How to use a walking break for brainstorming
The research supports trying walking during idea generation, but it does not establish a single tested routine. Use these steps as a practical approach, not a validated protocol.
- Pick a task that needs options. Use the walk to brainstorm possible approaches, examples, themes, names, or analogies. Save fact-checking, ranking, and final decisions for your return.
- Choose a safe, comfortable route. Walk at a pace that lets you think without demanding sustained navigation or attention. There is no established ideal speed, duration, or scenery.
- Hold the question lightly. Keep the problem in mind, but do not force yourself to produce an answer at every step. Let ideas come and go rather than treating the walk as a timed test.
- Capture ideas safely. If it is safe and practical, record a voice note or write a brief reminder. Otherwise, jot ideas down as soon as you return. Oppezzo and Schwartz’s four experiments found that walking boosted creative ideation in real time and shortly afterward, so leaving a short window to record thoughts is reasonable—not a guarantee of a breakthrough. Oppezzo and Schwartz, 2014.
- Return to a different mode of work. Sit down to compare ideas, check whether they are accurate, and develop the most promising ones. Treat walking as a low-cost aid to brainstorming, not a substitute for research or focused analysis.
Should you walk indoors or outdoors?
Choose the setting that is accessible, comfortable, and safe. The 2026 review detected no significant difference between indoor and outdoor walking for divergent thinking (subgroup p = 0.676). This means the analysis did not find a meaningful advantage for either setting; it does not prove they are identical in every circumstance.
Rank #2
- Quiet & Reliable Motor Performance - Powered by a 2.5HP (500+W) motor, the walking treadmill pad delivers stable performance with a 1–6 km/h speed range. Designed with noise-reduction technology and a durable steel frame, the running pad walking machine supports up to 264LBS (120KG) and operates quietly, suitable for home or office environments.
- Compact Space-Saving Design - The compact walking pad features a slim profile (109 × 50 × 11 cm) designed for smaller spaces. When not in use, the portable treadmill can be stored under a bed, sofa, desk, or cabinet, making it ideal for treadmills for home small spaces.
- Lightweight & Easy to Move - Weighing approximately 16kg and equipped with built-in transport wheels, the desk walking pad moves easily between rooms. The compact structure works well in spaces such as the living room, bedroom, or home office.
- Comfortable Walking Surface - A 5-layer anti-slip running belt with diamond texture, combined with silicone shock absorbers and rubber cushioning, helps reduce impact during walking. The 38.5 × 94 cm walking area provides comfortable space for daily exercise using a running machine for home.
- Simple Operation & Real-Time Display - The mini walking pad is ready to use without assembly. A remote control allows convenient speed adjustment, while the LED display shows speed, distance, time, and calories burned for workout tracking. Suitable as a treadmill machine for home for walking while working or relaxing.
An indoor route, including a treadmill, is a reasonable option if weather, mobility, or access makes outdoor walking inconvenient. The foundational experiments included treadmill walking, but they did not compare treadmill products or show that buying equipment is necessary. Outdoors is equally reasonable when the route is safe and does not require so much attention that it interrupts thinking.

What the studies do not settle
- How long or how fast to walk: The reviewed evidence does not establish an optimal duration, pace, or frequency.
- Whether everyone benefits equally: Most participants in the 2026 review were post-secondary students, so results may not generalize uniformly across ages, occupations, or everyday creative work.
- Whether a walk improves every kind of creativity: The clearest pooled finding concerns divergent-thinking measures; the evidence for convergent thinking was very uncertain and did not show a significant effect.
- Whether a personal breakthrough is guaranteed: Lab-style tasks and group averages cannot promise that an individual will have better ideas on a particular walk.
In one 2014 experiment, 81% of participants improved on an alternate-uses divergent-thinking task; that proportion applies only to that experiment, not to walkers in general. The study also reported a 23% increase in scores on its compound remote-associates measure of convergent thinking. Those specific experimental results do not override the broader 2026 review’s finding of no statistically significant pooled effect for convergent thinking.
