Your source files, terminals, language services, debuggers, and most extensions run on the remote Linux host; the desktop VS Code window is the interface. To use it reliably, prepare a supported SSH server and Linux user, verify ordinary SSH first, install the Remote – SSH extension, then connect with the same host entry you tested from a terminal.
What VS Code Remote-SSH actually does
The Remote – SSH extension opens a folder on a remote machine with a running SSH server. When you connect, VS Code installs a small VS Code Server in your account on the VPS. The local application renders the workbench and sends commands through an authenticated SSH connection, while the remote server performs file access, terminal sessions, language analysis, debugging, and extension work.

This is not a file-sync service. A project can remain entirely on the VPS; no source checkout is required on your laptop. A terminal opened from the remote window runs on the VPS, so package managers, compilers, test runners, environment variables, and deployed services are the remote system’s versions. The arrangement is useful when the VPS has the data, CPU, network access, or runtime configuration that your local computer does not.

Remote-SSH needs a shell-accessible host, not merely an FTP or SFTP account. Confirm the public address, login name, SSH port, and the cloud firewall or security-group rule that permits your client IP to reach that port. The SSH daemon must be running and the account must be allowed to log in.

| Requirement | What to verify | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | A glibc-based Linux distribution with a supported SSH server | Alpine Linux is not supported as a Remote-SSH host. |
| Kernel | Linux kernel 4.18 or newer | Current general Linux remote-development guidance. |
| GNU C library | glibc 2.28 or newer | VS Code release 1.99 (March 2025) made prebuilt servers require glibc 2.28 or later. |
| C++ runtime | libstdc++ 3.4.25 or newer | Some extensions have additional runtime requirements. |
| Utilities | /bin/bash, tar, and curl or wget |
Package names differ by distribution. |
| Memory and CPU | At least 1 GB RAM; 2 GB RAM and two CPU cores recommended | These are Microsoft’s current Remote-SSH host guidance, not a guarantee for every project or extension. |
| Local software | VS Code, an OpenSSH-compatible client, and the Remote – SSH extension | Install these on the computer running the VS Code window. |
On the VPS, you can inspect basic versions after logging in:
uname -r
ldd --version
g++ --version
command -v bash tar curl wget
The exact output format varies. The checks are intended to reveal an old kernel, missing libraries, or a missing download utility before the extension tries to install its server.
Create a secure SSH login
Generate an Ed25519 key
If you do not already have a key, create one on your local computer:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
Accept the default path or choose a dedicated filename, and protect the private key with a passphrase. Copy the resulting public-key file to the VPS account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Your hosting control panel may offer an “add SSH key” operation; otherwise, use a provider console or an existing administrative session to append the public key.
RSA 4096 is a fallback for a genuinely legacy SSH environment that cannot accept Ed25519. Do not replace a working modern key without a compatibility reason.
Use the same identity in an SSH config entry
A config entry makes the connection repeatable and avoids mistyping a nonstandard port:

Host my-vps
HostName 203.0.113.10
User developer
Port 22
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
Replace the example address, user, port, and key path with your values. The host alias my-vps can then be selected in VS Code and used with the ordinary SSH command.
Recommended Free Tools
Test ordinary SSH before opening VS Code
Run a direct test first:
ssh user@hostname
For a configured alias, use ssh my-vps. A successful login proves that DNS or the address, routing, the SSH port, the account, and the key are at least basically correct. It also lets you install missing packages and inspect the remote environment without the editor adding another layer.
- Timeout or “no route”: check the hostname, local network, VPS firewall, cloud security-group rule, and whether the daemon is listening on the expected port.
- “Permission denied (publickey)”: verify the username, public key contents, ownership of the home directory, and permissions on
~/.sshandauthorized_keys. - Password prompt when you expected a key: confirm the key path and use
ssh -v user@hostnameto see which identities the client offers. - Host-key warning: verify that the address really points to the intended VPS before accepting a changed host key.
Do not proceed to Remote-SSH until this command reaches a shell consistently. If direct SSH fails, changing VS Code settings will not repair DNS, routing, firewall, or account configuration.
Install Remote-SSH and connect
- Install the current VS Code release on your local computer and add the Microsoft Remote – SSH extension from the Extensions view.
- Open the Command Palette and run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host….
- Choose the existing
my-vpsentry, or enter the sameuser@hostnamevalue that worked in your terminal. If prompted to save a new host, select the SSH config file you use. - If VS Code cannot identify the operating system, choose the remote platform manually. Select Linux for a normal Linux VPS.
- Wait while VS Code contacts the host and installs or starts VS Code Server. Watch the Remote – SSH output channel for the exact command, download, and error message.
- After the window reopens with a remote indicator, use File > Open… to select the project directory, or use File > Open Workspace… for a saved multi-folder workspace.
The first connection can take longer because the server has to be downloaded and unpacked. Later connections normally reuse the installed server that matches the local VS Code build. A VS Code update can therefore trigger another server installation.
Understand where code and tools run
| Activity | Location | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code window and keyboard input | Your local computer | The interface remains responsive as long as the connection is healthy. |
| Project files opened in the remote window | VPS storage | Saving writes to the VPS; there is no automatic local copy. |
| Terminal > New Terminal | VPS shell | Commands see remote paths, users, environment variables, and network access. |
| Language servers and most remote extensions | VPS | Install runtimes, SDKs, linters, and debuggers in the remote environment. |
| Run and Debug processes | Normally VPS processes | Ports and service dependencies must be reachable from the place where they run. |
Use the integrated terminal to create the project environment on the VPS. For example, clone or create the repository there, install its dependencies there, and select the resulting interpreter or SDK through the normal VS Code command. A local extension that only manipulates local files is not automatically moved; VS Code marks extensions as local or remote and installs compatible ones in the appropriate location.

Allow the downloads and tunnel traffic
During server setup, VS Code needs outbound HTTPS access to update.code.visualstudio.com and vscode.download.prss.microsoft.com. Depending on the selected download mode, the local computer, the VPS, or both must be able to reach those endpoints. Installing extensions through the marketplace can also require marketplace.visualstudio.com and *.gallerycdn.vsassets.io to be permitted by your proxy or egress policy.

Once the server is installed, client-server communication travels through an authenticated, encrypted SSH tunnel. You do not need to expose a separate VS Code port on the VPS. Keep the SSH port protected with a firewall and restrict inbound access to trusted networks where practical.
Password authentication works, but key authentication is the recommended routine. Remote-SSH does not save your passwords or alternate authentication tokens, so a password may be requested again after reconnecting. For a multi-user Linux or macOS host, the optional Remote.SSH: Remote Server Listen On Socket setting provides an additional isolation measure by using a Unix socket for the remote server listener.
Open and work on a VPS project
Choose a stable project directory
Keep repositories under the remote user’s home directory or another path that the account can read and write. Avoid editing system directories as root. If a service account owns the files, grant the developer account the minimum group or ACL access needed rather than making the entire tree world-writable.

Open Terminal > New Terminal in the connected window and install the project’s language runtime, package manager, compiler, linter, test runner, and debugger on the VPS. The commands and package names depend on the distribution and project; the important distinction is that they must be available in the remote shell. Check paths with commands such as which python, node --version, or the equivalent for your stack, then select the interpreter through VS Code’s normal language commands.
Run, debug, and expose services
Use the normal Run and Debug controls after the remote extension for your language is installed. A development server started in the remote terminal listens on the VPS. Use VS Code’s port-forwarding interface when you need to view a remote web service locally, or connect through an intentionally secured reverse proxy. Do not open a development server to the public Internet merely because it is convenient; bind and firewall it according to the application’s needs.
Reconnect after closing the laptop
Closing the local window ends the editor session but does not automatically stop every process you started on the VPS. Long-running jobs should use a service manager or a terminal multiplexer configured for your project. On the next connection, select the same host and reopen the remote folder; the files remain on the VPS.

Troubleshoot failed server installation
Read the Remote – SSH output first
Open the Output panel, choose Remote – SSH, and read the first concrete error rather than the final generic failure. It usually identifies whether the problem is authentication, platform detection, a missing utility, a download, extraction, or a permission issue.
Authentication or connection errors
Repeat ssh user@hostname outside VS Code. Fix a timeout at the DNS, route, firewall, or cloud security-group layer. Fix a key error by checking the account, key file, and remote permissions. If the VPS uses a nonstandard port, put that port in the SSH config entry and connect through the alias instead of relying on an interactive prompt.
“Bad permissions” messages
SSH rejects keys when the private key, home directory, .ssh directory, or authorized_keys is writable by inappropriate users. Correct ownership and restrictive permissions using the VPS administrator’s documented procedure, then test direct SSH again. Do not weaken permissions broadly just to silence the message.
Missing shell, archive, or downloader
Confirm that /bin/bash, tar, and either curl or wget exist and are executable. Install the distribution’s corresponding packages, reconnect, and inspect the output channel again. A minimal image may also lack the C++ runtime required by the server or by a language extension.
Unsupported libraries or architecture
Compare the VPS kernel, glibc, and libstdc++ versions with the current prerequisites. A host below glibc 2.28 may not run the prebuilt server used by current VS Code releases. ARM hosts can connect, but some extensions containing x86-native binaries will not work; look for an ARM-compatible build or replace that extension with a language/tool implementation that supports the host architecture.
The VPS cannot download VS Code Server
Permit the documented HTTPS endpoints through the VPS egress firewall, proxy, or DNS policy. If outbound access from the host is intentionally restricted, configure remote.SSH.localServerDownload so VS Code downloads the server locally and transfers it over SSH. The transfer still requires the SSH account to write the installation directory.
Best Value
Alpine Linux host
Do not attempt to force Remote-SSH onto Alpine as a supported host. Alpine is supported for other workflows such as Dev Containers and WSL, but not for Remote-SSH itself. Choose a compatible glibc-based distribution for a direct SSH development session.
Connection drops or slow indexing
Check latency and packet loss, then reduce unnecessary file watching in very large trees such as build, dependency, and cache directories. Give the VPS enough RAM and CPU for its language servers and extensions; Microsoft lists 2 GB RAM and two cores as a better baseline even though 1 GB RAM is the minimum stated requirement. A low-memory machine may kill language servers or become unresponsive during indexing.
Know when Remote-SSH is the wrong tool
Remote-SSH is designed for interactive shell-based development. An SFTP- or FTP-only host lacks the shell and server model it requires. If you only need to browse and make occasional single-file edits, SSHFS can present a remote directory locally, but its network filesystem behavior is generally slower for bulk operations. If a local build, scanner, or media tool must read and write many files, rsync is usually a better deliberate synchronization workflow. Neither alternative gives the same remote terminal, language-service, and debugger placement as Remote-SSH.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose based on where the work should execute:
| Need | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Run the whole toolchain beside production-like data | Remote-SSH | Files and processes stay on the VPS while you use the local VS Code interface. |
| Browse a remote tree or edit one file with minimal setup | SSHFS | Convenient mounting, but less suitable for heavy builds and large transfers. |
| Let local tools process many files while keeping a remote copy | rsync-based workflow | Explicit, efficient bulk synchronization rather than interactive remote execution. |
| Hosting provides only FTP/SFTP and no shell | Not Remote-SSH | The required SSH server-side model is absent. |
Use a VPS that will remain compatible
For a self-managed Linux VPS with full root access, Antihost VPS offers AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D systems with NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs, 2 to 64 GB RAM and unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine.
Before provisioning or migrating a project, compare six factors rather than choosing solely on advertised CPU count:
- Operating system and libraries: confirm a supported glibc-based distribution, current kernel, libstdc++, Bash, tar, and a downloader.
- SSH administration: verify key installation, nonstandard-port support, account management, and a way to recover access through a provider console.
- Network policy: allow inbound SSH from the networks you use and outbound HTTPS for server and extension downloads, or plan local server downloads.
- Capacity: budget memory and cores for the operating system, language servers, indexes, tests, and your application—not just the editor server.
- CPU architecture: check whether required extensions ship binaries for x86-64, ARM, or the architecture you intend to deploy.
- Workflow objective: select Remote-SSH for interactive remote execution, and a synchronization method when local bulk-file processing is the real requirement.
With those checks complete, the repeatable workflow is straightforward: establish key-based SSH, prove the shell connection, connect through Remote-SSH: Connect to Host…, open the remote folder, install the toolchain in the remote terminal, and use the Remote – SSH output channel whenever a connection or server update fails.
