How to Use VLC with Chrome on a Chromebook or Desktop

VLC is not a Chrome plug-in: Chromebook users can install the ChromeOS app, while desktop users can use a third-party extension and native helper or open a direct stream URL in VLC.

VLC does not need to run as a Chrome plug-in for the workflows covered here. On a Chromebook, you can install VLC as a ChromeOS app; on Windows, macOS, or Linux, a third-party extension can send a media link to desktop VLC, with a native helper installed. If you already have a direct stream URL, you can also open it manually in VLC. Which route works depends on your device and whether you have a media-stream address or only a webpage.

Open a direct stream in VLC Anyone who has a direct network media URL VLC’s Open Network Stream command A webpage address is not necessarily a direct stream, and protected playback may not work.

VideoLAN describes VLC generally as “a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most video files and network streaming protocols.” That broad description is not a guarantee that every file, website, or device will work.

Install VLC as a ChromeOS app

VideoLAN describes VLC for Chrome OS as its player port for ChromeOS. It says the app supports Chromebooks capable of running the latest Chrome OS and can play most local video and audio, network streams including adaptive streaming, and DVD ISOs.

  1. Install VLC for ChromeOS from the official VideoLAN ChromeOS page.
  2. Open VLC for the first time and choose a media folder when prompted. VLC uses that folder to index the library.
  3. Open media from the library or use VLC’s available playback controls to access a supported network stream.

VideoLAN lists formats including MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, Ogg, FLAC, TS, M2TS, Wv, and AAC, and says codecs are included without separate downloads. Treat these as the app’s stated capabilities, not a promise that every file encoded in those formats will play on every Chromebook.

Send a link from desktop Chrome to VLC

For desktop operating systems, the Chrome Web Store lists an extension named Open in VLC™ media player. Its listing describes right-clicking an audio or video link and choosing the extension’s context-menu item, or using its browser action. If it detects more than one media link, it prompts you to select one.

This is an independent third-party project, not a VideoLAN product or endorsement. The listing requires a minimal native-client application, so installing the browser extension alone may not complete setup. Follow the extension listing’s instructions for the matching helper and your operating system before trying to open media.

  1. Install desktop VLC if it is not already installed.
  2. Review the extension listing and install its required native-client component using the publisher’s instructions.
  3. In Chrome, right-click a media link and choose the extension’s Open in VLC item, or use its browser action. If prompted to choose among detected links, select the intended one.

The Chrome Web Store listing showed version 0.4.5, an update date of July 15, 2026, 300,000 users, and 866 ratings when accessed October 7, 2026. Those are changeable listing figures, not independent measures of reliability or proof that the extension works on a particular site.

A separate third-party extension also called Open in VLC™ documents a different setup: configure the local VLC application path and install a native-client patch. Its listing likewise says it is unofficial and unrelated to VLC or VideoLAN. Check its own instructions rather than assuming the setup is interchangeable with the other extension.

Open a direct media URL manually

If you have a direct network media URL, VLC’s documented route is Media > Open Network Stream. Enter the URL and select Play. VLC describes network streaming as playback while content arrives, without waiting for the entire media file to download. See the VLC network-streaming documentation.

  1. Copy the direct media-stream URL.
  2. In VLC, choose Media > Open Network Stream.
  3. Enter the URL and choose Play.

A video page’s address and the address of the media stream it plays are different things. Pasting a webpage URL into VLC will not reliably open the video. A site may also use protected playback or other restrictions that prevent VLC or an extension from accessing the stream; these workflows do not bypass them.

What to try when a link will not open

  • You are on a Chromebook: Use the ChromeOS VLC app rather than expecting a desktop-VLC extension workflow to apply.
  • You are on Windows, macOS, or Linux: Confirm desktop VLC and the extension’s required native helper or patch are installed.
  • The extension finds no usable media link: The page may expose only a webpage address, or its playback method may not be compatible. Try a direct stream URL only if the site provides one.
  • The direct URL fails in VLC: Check that it is a media-stream URL and that the stream is accessible to VLC. A protected or restricted stream may not be playable through this method.

Cost and affiliation

VLC is free and open source, according to its official product page. The Chrome extensions described above are independent third-party projects, and their listings explicitly disclaim a relationship with VideoLAN. Their presence in the Chrome Web Store does not make them official VLC components.
