Common VLC keyboard shortcuts
These are the controls documented for VLC Desktop 3.0. They are a general reference, not a guarantee that every macOS build uses identical defaults.

Check or change shortcuts in VLC for Mac

Open VLC’s preferences from the VLC menu bar. VideoLAN’s desktop documentation gives the route as Tools > Preferences; if your Mac build does not show a Tools menu, look in the VLC menu for Preferences.

Select Hotkeys in the preferences window to see the current keyboard assignments.

Use the assignments shown there as the authority for your installation. If you edit a binding, follow the controls displayed in that Hotkeys view to apply the change.
VideoLAN identifies Hotkeys as the preferences section for keyboard shortcuts in its VLC Desktop 3.0 preferences documentation. Menu labels and layout can differ by platform or build.

How Mac modifier keys map to VLC shortcuts
On a Mac, the modifier symbols mean Control (⌃), Option (⌥), Shift (⇧), and Command (⌘). Apple notes that shortcuts can be specific to an app. The VLC reference’s “Ctrl” should not automatically be changed to Command just because you are using macOS: confirm the actual assignment in VLC’s Hotkeys preferences. If a VLC shortcut does not work

Check the binding in Preferences > Hotkeys; your version may differ from the general Desktop 3.0 reference, or the shortcut may have been customized.

Make sure the VLC window you intend to control is active. A normal application hotkey may not respond when VLC does not have focus.

For a shortcut expected to work without focusing VLC, inspect whether that particular binding is marked global in VLC’s Hotkeys settings rather than assuming all VLC shortcuts are global.

VLC’s desktop documentation covers macOS as well as other platforms, but the published hotkey list does not provide a macOS release-by-release comparison. The installed app’s displayed assignments are therefore the most useful check.
