Visual Studio’s Web Live Preview is a designer experience for Web Forms projects: it lets you view edits in a running web app. It is not the VS Code Live Preview extension, and it is not the same workflow as ASP.NET Core Hot Reload. First identify which Visual Studio product and project type you are using; then check whether the Web Forms Designer in your installed Visual Studio version offers the Web Live Preview option.
What Visual Studio Web Live Preview does
Microsoft presented Web Live Preview in a Visual Studio 2022 context for building Web Forms projects. Its purpose is to show changes reflected in the running application while you work. Microsoft’s Visual Studio Toolbox episode dated September 9, 2021, describes the experience in that Web Forms context; it does not establish that every current Visual Studio release has identical controls or supports every project and edit type.
The name can be confusing because several products and features offer a kind of live preview. The most useful distinction is by host application, project family, and task:
| What you have | Relevant workflow | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Visual Studio IDE and a Web Forms project | Web Live Preview, if available in the installed release | Designer preview of a running Web Forms app as you edit |
| Visual Studio Code | The separate VS Code Live Preview extension | A preview workflow belonging to VS Code, not Visual Studio’s Web Forms Designer |
| ASP.NET Core project | ASP.NET Core Hot Reload and, where supported, Browser Refresh | Applying supported changes to a running app and refreshing the browser |
| Need to inspect browser behavior | Visual Studio’s Edge debugging integration | JavaScript debugging and browser tools, rather than simply displaying a designer preview |
These workflows solve related but different problems. Selecting the wrong one can make a feature appear to be missing when the actual issue is that the project or host application is different.

How to enable Web Live Preview in Visual Studio
The reported settings route comes from a Microsoft Q&A answer, not a current, version-by-version product reference. Treat the labels as a guide and confirm them against your installed release.
- Check the application and project. Open the project in the Visual Studio IDE, not Visual Studio Code. Confirm that it is a Web Forms project; the Web Forms Designer route is not a general-purpose setting for all web projects.
- Open the options dialog. In Visual Studio, select Tools > Options.
- Look under the Web Forms Designer settings. Navigate to Web Forms Designer > General, if that category is present.
- Select the designer. If the installed version offers a Web Forms designer choice, select Web Live Preview.
- Restart if needed. The reported setup route says to restart Visual Studio after changing the selection. Follow any restart prompt from your installation.
- Open the page in the designer and run the app. Use the project’s normal workflow to start the application, then make an edit and observe whether it appears in the running preview.
Do not assume that every kind of edit will appear immediately or that this path applies to every Web Forms project. The available evidence does not provide a complete compatibility matrix by Visual Studio release, workload, project type, or file type. If the option is absent, check the product and project first, then consult documentation for the precise Visual Studio release you have installed.

How to see Web Forms changes live
Once the designer is selected and the application is running, use the preview to check the visible result of an edit. Keep the distinction between a rendered change and a debugging session in mind: a live view helps you see the page, but JavaScript breakpoints, console inspection, and other browser diagnostics belong to the debugging workflow.
- Make a small, easy-to-identify change first, such as a visible text or style change.
- Allow the running application and preview to respond before deciding that the feature is not working.
- If the change does not appear, verify that you are viewing the intended page and that the app is running through the project’s normal workflow.
- Do not infer support for a particular edit type from the general description of Web Live Preview; check release-specific documentation when support for a specific file or project configuration matters.
Use Edge debugging only when you need browser inspection
Visual Studio also documents an Edge-based browser debugging workflow. It is adjacent to Web Live Preview, not a prerequisite for showing a page in the designer. The documented workflow involves launching an Edge preview channel from Visual Studio, enabling script debugging, attaching the JavaScript debugger, and opening Edge DevTools from the design window.

Choose this route when you need to investigate JavaScript behavior, set breakpoints, or inspect the page in browser tools. If your only goal is to see the page while editing, start with the Web Forms Designer selection instead. Debugging configuration and browser availability can vary; use the Microsoft instructions that match the Visual Studio version installed rather than assuming that every Edge channel or menu label is identical.
ASP.NET Core: use Hot Reload, not the Web Forms Designer path
ASP.NET Core projects should not be routed through the Web Forms Designer instructions just because both workflows involve a page changing while an app runs. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core Hot Reload guidance describes separate scenarios: CSS can update while the application is running, and Razor edits can refresh the browser automatically in supported .NET 6 and later scenarios.

Support depends on the target framework, whether the application is running in a Debug configuration, and Hot Reload settings. If a change is not applied, check those conditions and the framework-specific guidance for the project. Do not treat the .NET 6+ Razor behavior as a promise that every project, file, or edit will refresh automatically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Web Live Preview may be missing
- You are in VS Code. VS Code’s Live Preview extension is a separate tool. Its commands and context menu do not enable the Visual Studio IDE’s Web Forms Designer feature.
- The project is not Web Forms. The reported settings route is specifically under Web Forms Designer. For ASP.NET Core, investigate Hot Reload and Browser Refresh instead.
- Your release uses different labels or does not expose that setting. The Q&A route is a reported troubleshooting answer, not a guarantee for every release. Check the documentation for your exact installed version.
- The selection has not taken effect yet. The reported route includes restarting Visual Studio; restart if prompted or if you have just changed the designer choice.
- You need debugging, not preview. A preview and a JavaScript debugging session are different tasks. Use the Edge debugging workflow when you need the debugger or DevTools.
If the Web Forms Designer category or Web Live Preview choice is still absent after checking the host application and project type, do not substitute a VS Code instruction and expect it to change Visual Studio. Verify feature availability against documentation for your installed release.

Capture a rendered page without setting up a browser script
Web Live Preview is an IDE workflow for editing and viewing a Web Forms application; a screenshot API is a different tool for capturing a URL. If your goal is to save or automate a screenshot of a publicly reachable page rather than preview edits inside Visual Studio, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try. A remote capture service cannot replace the local IDE designer or automatically access a page that only runs on your machine.
Or skip the browser setup
For a URL the service can reach, one GET request returns an image or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters and setup. The service can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers, and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Questions to settle before choosing a preview workflow
- Am I using Visual Studio or VS Code? The IDEs have distinct preview features and settings.
- Is this Web Forms or ASP.NET Core? Web Live Preview belongs to the Web Forms Designer context; ASP.NET Core has framework-specific Hot Reload and Browser Refresh workflows.
- Do I need to see a page or debug it? Previewing a rendered page and attaching a JavaScript debugger are separate jobs.
- Does my installed version document the option I need? Confirm exact labels and supported scenarios for that release; no complete version-by-version compatibility matrix is established here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Web Live Preview require Microsoft Edge?
The described Web Forms preview purpose does not establish an Edge requirement. Edge is part of the separate Visual Studio browser-debugging workflow.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo to preview edits that exist only on my computer?
Not through a remote capture of an unreachable local page. ScreenshotNeo captures URLs it can access; it does not provide Visual Studio’s local Web Forms designer.
