To take a screenshot, use your device’s built-in capture controls: Windows Snipping Tool, Shift-Command-3 on a Mac, the button combination for your iPhone model, or Power plus Volume Down on most Android phones. A screenshot may be saved as a file, copied to the clipboard, or shown in a preview for editing and sharing. Those are different outcomes: if you want to paste an image, check that it is on the clipboard or insert the saved screenshot from your photos or files.
Choose the capture and destination you need
Before pressing a shortcut, decide what you want to capture and where the image should go. A full-screen capture is useful for showing an entire page or desktop; a selected region avoids sharing unrelated content. A window capture isolates one application. On supported Android devices, a scrolling screenshot can include more than the visible screen.
| Need | Useful route | Where the result goes |
|---|---|---|
| Capture part or all of a Windows screen | Snipping Tool; choose a capture mode | Follow the tool’s preview and save or copy actions |
| Capture a Mac screen | Shift-Command-3 for the full screen | Screenshot file by default; use the thumbnail menu to save to clipboard |
| Capture an iPhone screen | Button combination for the phone model | Screenshot preview and saved capture; use the available next action |
| Capture an Android screen | Power and Volume Down on most devices | Saved screenshot, which you can find, edit, or share |
| Capture a web page from code | Screenshot service API | Image or PDF response |
Clipboard means the image is temporarily available to paste in another app. A saved screenshot is a file you can locate and attach or insert. A share action opens a route for sending the image; sharing is not necessarily the same as copying it to the clipboard.

Capture with Snipping Tool
Use Snipping Tool when you want to choose a capture shape or target. Microsoft documents rectangular, free-form, window, and full-screen capture modes. Search for and open Snipping Tool, select the capture mode you need, then start the snip and select the area or window where applicable. Use the resulting preview or editor to inspect the capture and choose the available copy or save action.

See Microsoft’s current instructions for using Snipping Tool to capture screenshots and its guidance on the Print Screen shortcut. Shortcuts and what happens after a capture can depend on Windows configuration and the capture path, so look for the tool’s preview rather than assuming a file was saved or the image is already on the clipboard.
Paste a screenshot into a document or email
Microsoft documents a screen-copy workflow in Microsoft 365 programs on Windows: capture the screen content through the documented app procedure, then paste it into a document or email with Ctrl+V. The image is copied to the clipboard in that workflow. This is distinct from taking a screenshot that is only saved as a file. If Ctrl+V inserts nothing, return to the capture app and use its copy control, or save the image and insert it from the destination app.
Microsoft’s steps are described in Copy the window or screen contents. The documented clipboard procedure is specifically for Microsoft 365 programs on Windows; do not assume every Windows shortcut follows that exact behavior.

Take, copy, and paste a screenshot on Mac
Capture the screen
Press Shift-Command-3 to capture the screen. To put the screenshot on the clipboard instead of treating it only as a saved capture, wait for the thumbnail that appears in the corner, Control-click it, and choose Save to Clipboard. Then click the destination app and paste using its paste command, commonly Command-V.

- When the thumbnail appears in the screen corner, Control-click it.
- Select Save to Clipboard.
- Open the destination app and paste the image.
Apple notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not permit screenshots of their windows. If a restricted window produces no usable capture, that does not necessarily mean the shortcut is broken. See Apple’s current Take a screenshot on Mac instructions.
Take and reuse a screenshot on iPhone
Use the controls for your iPhone model
The button combination depends on whether your iPhone has Face ID or a Home button. Follow Apple’s model-specific instructions rather than treating one combination as universal. Press the specified buttons together; the screen capture appears in the screenshot workflow and can be reviewed from its preview or found among saved screenshots.

To use the image elsewhere, inspect the preview for the action your iOS version offers, or open the saved screenshot and insert or share it from the destination app. Apple’s instructions support model-dependent capture controls; they do not establish a universal direct-to-clipboard iPhone shortcut. If you specifically need clipboard paste, check for a copy action in the workflow available on your phone rather than assuming the capture itself was copied. Apple’s Take a screenshot on iPhone page separates the Face ID and Home button cases.
Take, find, and share a screenshot on Android
Capture the current screen
On most Android phones, open the screen you want and press Power and Volume Down together. If that does not work, hold the Power button briefly and tap Screenshot if the option appears. Device makers can vary the controls, so use the manufacturer’s help page if neither method is available.

Find or edit the capture
Google’s guidance says to find screenshots in Google Photos under Collections > On this device > Screenshots. On older Android versions, the phone’s Gallery app may be the place to look. Open the capture to use the editing and sharing actions available there.

Sharing and clipboard copying are separate operations. Google’s general instructions describe finding, editing, and sharing screenshots; they do not promise a universal Android copy-to-clipboard flow. If you want to paste the image into another app, use a copy action if your device or app offers one, or insert the saved screenshot through the destination app.
Capture a scrolling screenshot
Google documents scrolling screenshots on Android 12 and later for most screens that allow scrolling. After making a regular capture, use the scrolling-capture control if it appears, then extend the capture to include the content you need. This is not supported on every app or screen; if the option is absent, the screen may not permit scrolling capture. See Google’s Android screenshot and screen recording instructions.

Fix common screenshot problems
- The shortcut did not capture the area I wanted: Use Snipping Tool and deliberately choose rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen mode instead of relying on an unfamiliar shortcut path.
- Ctrl+V or Command-V pastes nothing: The screenshot may have been saved rather than copied. Return to the preview/editor and choose copy, or insert the saved file through the destination app. On Mac, use the thumbnail’s Save to Clipboard action before pasting.
- I cannot find the phone screenshot: On Android, check Google Photos at Collections > On this device > Screenshots; older devices may use Gallery. On iPhone, open the screenshot preview or look in the saved screenshot collection.
- Android does not show a Screenshot power-menu option: Use Power plus Volume Down, or consult the phone maker’s current instructions.
- Scrolling capture is missing: It is documented for Android 12 and later on most scrollable screens, not every app or view.
- A protected app window is blank or absent: Some apps restrict capture. Apple specifically notes that apps such as Apple TV may not permit screenshots of their windows.
- The controls differ from these steps: Device version, manufacturer, accessibility configuration, and app restrictions can change behavior. Check the current help page for your device maker and follow the capture preview’s own actions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does taking a screenshot automatically copy it?
No. Some workflows save a file, some copy to the clipboard, and others show a preview with further actions. Use the copy option when you intend to paste.
Can I paste a phone screenshot directly into another app?
That depends on the device and app. The general iPhone and Android guidance describes previews, saved screenshots, editing, or sharing rather than a universal direct-to-clipboard method.
