The quickest way to use Vimeo on WordPress is to paste a public Vimeo link into WordPress’s native Vimeo block and select Embed. Use Vimeo’s generated HTML instead when you need fixed dimensions or detailed player controls. Private, password-protected, unlisted and domain-restricted videos work only when Vimeo’s viewing and embedding permissions match the WordPress site.

Choose the right Vimeo-to-WordPress method
WordPress supports Vimeo through its native embed block and oEmbed handling. The block is the simplest option because WordPress retrieves the player from the video URL and inserts it without requiring you to edit code. It is the best choice for most public videos, especially when you want a responsive player that follows the theme’s content width.

Copied embed HTML is useful when the Vimeo Share dialog gives you settings that the native block does not expose in your editor. You can select responsive or fixed dimensions and configure available playback options before copying the code. You then place that code in an HTML-capable WordPress editing area, such as a Custom HTML block.

Neither method bypasses Vimeo privacy rules. WordPress can display only a player that Vimeo allows the visitor and the site domain to load.

Embed a public Vimeo video with the native WordPress block
A public video is discoverable on Vimeo and can be embedded when its embed setting permits it. This workflow is documented by WordPress for the Vimeo block.
- Open the video in Vimeo. Copy the video’s URL from the browser address bar or Vimeo’s sharing controls.
- Edit the WordPress post or page. Place the cursor where the player should appear.
- Add the block. Select the plus button, search for Vimeo, and insert the Vimeo block.
- Paste the URL. Paste the complete Vimeo address into the block’s URL field.
- Embed it. Select Embed. WordPress retrieves the player and displays it in the editor.
- Save and preview. Publish or update the page, then test the front end rather than relying only on the editor preview.
If the block asks you to convert the pasted link instead of embedding it, confirm that the URL is a Vimeo video URL and that the video is allowed to be embedded. A private video, a malformed address or a restricted domain can prevent the oEmbed request from returning a player.
Check the result at two screen sizes
Open the page on a desktop-sized browser and on a phone-sized viewport. Confirm that the player stays inside the content column, that the controls are reachable, and that text above and below it has the spacing your theme intends. WordPress themes and plugins can change iframe width, height, margins or overflow, so the editor’s appearance is not a guarantee of the published layout.
Use Vimeo’s generated HTML for more control
Vimeo’s Share panel exposes settings that are useful when the native block does not give you enough control over presentation or playback.
- Open the video in Vimeo and enter its video settings.
- Choose Share, then choose Embed.
- Choose a responsive player or enter fixed dimensions, depending on the layout you need.
- Set the playback options offered by Vimeo, such as autoplay, mute and loop. Select caption or subtitle capabilities where your Vimeo configuration provides them.
- Copy the generated HTML exactly as Vimeo provides it.
- In WordPress, add a Custom HTML block (or use another authorized HTML-capable editor), paste the code, and save the post or page.
- Preview the published page on desktop and mobile. Inspect the surrounding theme styles if the iframe is too narrow, too tall or surrounded by unexpected whitespace.
Do not paste untrusted iframe or script code into an editor that strips or accepts arbitrary markup without authorization. WordPress’s oEmbed and embed handling filters HTML for security. The native Vimeo block or an authorized HTML-capable editing role is safer than injecting code copied from an unknown source.

Understand Vimeo privacy modes before you embed
Viewing privacy and embed privacy are separate decisions. A video can be viewable to someone who has a link but still be blocked from loading on your WordPress domain. Set both policies deliberately before troubleshooting WordPress.

Unlisted videos: preserve the privacy hash
An unlisted Vimeo URL contains a privacy hash appended to the address. Treat that hash as part of the credential for retrieving the video. Paste the complete address into WordPress and keep it intact when copying links between editors, menus or templates. A shortened URL can cause oEmbed retrieval to fail even though the video itself is still available in Vimeo.
Password-protected videos
Password protection controls playback, not merely the visibility of the Vimeo page. The player can appear on WordPress while asking visitors for the video password. Tell intended viewers how they will receive that password through your own access process; do not assume that embedding removes the prompt.
Why a private video cannot be embedded for ordinary visitors
Vimeo’s Private mode permits viewing by the owner and team members only. A public WordPress audience does not inherit those permissions, so the player will show a privacy or availability error. To serve a wider audience, change the Vimeo viewing mode to one appropriate for that audience and then review embed restrictions.
Set where the player is allowed to load
Vimeo’s embed privacy setting can be Anywhere, Nowhere or Specific domains. The setting is independent of whether the video is public, unlisted or password-protected.

- Anywhere: The video can load in an embed on any site, subject to the video’s viewing mode.
- Nowhere: Vimeo blocks embedding. The video may still be watchable on Vimeo or through another permitted access path, but WordPress cannot display it as a player.
- Specific domains: Vimeo allows the player only on domains you list. Vimeo’s 2025 documentation says up to 50 domains can be managed for this restriction.
Enter the actual domain used by the published WordPress page. If visitors reach the site through a different domain, subdomain or staging address, that host may need to be accounted for under Vimeo’s domain rules. A site outside the allowed list receives an error even when the video URL is correct.
Configure player presentation and accessibility
Responsive versus fixed dimensions
A responsive embed adapts to the available content width and is normally the safer choice for a theme that must work across phones, tablets and desktop screens. A fixed-size embed can be appropriate for a controlled layout, a presentation grid or a legacy design with known dimensions, but it can overflow a narrow content area if the theme does not scale it.
Autoplay, mute and loop
Vimeo’s embed dialog supports autoplay, mute and loop. These options affect both user experience and browser behavior. Autoplay is commonly restricted by browsers unless the video is muted, so test the exact combination on the published page rather than assuming that a selected setting guarantees automatic playback. A looping video can also make it harder for visitors to tell when the content has finished; use it when continuous playback is intentional.
Captions and subtitles
Vimeo identifies captions and subtitles as player capabilities. Provide a caption track for spoken content and verify that the control is visible and usable in the embedded player. Captions improve access for deaf or hard-of-hearing visitors and for people watching without sound. They also help when autoplay is disabled or when a visitor is in a noisy environment.
Surrounding page content
Give the player a descriptive heading or nearby explanatory text when the video is not self-explanatory. Keep the player inside the main content column and avoid placing essential instructions only inside the video. Visitors who cannot load the player should still be able to understand what the page is about and what action is expected.

Troubleshoot “Vimeo video not showing in WordPress”
Use the symptom that matches what you see. Privacy errors and layout problems have different causes.
The block will not embed the URL
- Confirm that you pasted a Vimeo video URL rather than a profile, showcase or unrelated sharing URL.
- For an unlisted video, paste the complete URL with its privacy hash; do not use a shortened version.
- Check Vimeo’s viewing mode. A private video cannot be served to ordinary visitors.
- Check the embed privacy setting. If it is Nowhere, or if the WordPress domain is absent from Specific domains, WordPress cannot retrieve a usable player.
- Try the native Vimeo block before moving to custom HTML. WordPress documents this as the standard public-video workflow.
The player says the video does not exist or shows a privacy error
- Open the video in Vimeo while signed in and verify that it still exists and that your account can watch it.
- Recheck both viewing privacy and embed privacy; changing only one may leave the other blocking the visitor.
- If the video is unlisted, replace the WordPress URL with the full address containing the privacy hash.
- If embedding is restricted to specific domains, verify the exact host used by the live page, including any subdomain required by your site.
- Ask a visitor who is not signed in to test the page. A player that works for the owner can still fail for ordinary viewers when the video is private.
The iframe has odd whitespace or the wrong dimensions
Inspect the theme and active plugins. Vimeo notes that WordPress themes and plugins can change iframe presentation. Look for CSS rules affecting iframe width, height, display, margins, padding, max-width or overflow. Compare the native block with Vimeo-generated responsive HTML; if both are distorted, the surrounding theme styles are more likely than the Vimeo URL to be responsible.
Autoplay or another playback option does not work
First verify that the option was enabled in Vimeo’s embed settings and that the updated code or block is what the published page uses. Browser cookie settings and extensions can affect some Vimeo options, so test in a private browsing window or a clean browser profile with extensions disabled. Autoplay may still be limited by the browser’s media policy, especially when the video is not muted.
The code disappears after saving
WordPress filters HTML for security. If your editing role or block does not permit the markup, use the native Vimeo block or ask an administrator to provide an authorized HTML-capable editing context. Do not work around the filter by adding arbitrary scripts from an untrusted source.
A reliable publishing checklist
- Confirm the Vimeo viewing mode matches your intended audience: public, unlisted, password, embed only or private.
- Confirm Vimeo’s embed privacy is set to Anywhere or includes the WordPress domain under Specific domains.
- Copy the full URL, retaining an unlisted video’s privacy hash.
- Use the native Vimeo block unless you specifically need generated HTML controls.
- If using HTML, configure the player in Vimeo’s Share → Embed dialog and paste the resulting code into an authorized Custom HTML block.
- Check responsive behavior at phone and desktop widths.
- Test playback while signed out or in a private browser window, because an owner’s permissions can hide a visitor-facing problem.
- Verify captions or subtitles, keyboard-accessible controls and readable surrounding text.
- After publishing, test the final URL from the same domain visitors will use.
What to do when you need a private Vimeo video on WordPress
There is no WordPress setting that turns a Vimeo-private video into a public embed. Decide first who should watch it. For a broad audience, select a Vimeo mode that permits those viewers, then allow embedding on the WordPress domain. For a limited audience, use Vimeo’s password mode or a suitable access-controlled site and communicate the password or access requirements separately. For owner- and team-only material, keep the video private and do not place a public WordPress player on the page.
When a restricted video is appropriate for embedding, test it with the exact permissions your audience will have. An administrator, Vimeo team member or logged-in owner may see a player that an anonymous visitor cannot. This distinction is especially important for training, client previews and internal documentation.
Native block or HTML: a practical decision
Choose the native block when the requirement is simply “show this Vimeo video here.” It minimizes code, follows WordPress’s supported Vimeo workflow and is easier for editors to maintain. Choose Vimeo-generated HTML when a design specification requires fixed dimensions, a particular responsive configuration or playback options that need to be set in Vimeo’s embed dialog. In either case, privacy settings, domain authorization and final-device testing determine whether visitors actually receive a working player.
